'100 Dead' In Anti-China Protests In Tibet
By Sky News SkyNews - 9 minutes agoChina has locked down the Tibetan capital of Lhasa and set a deadline for rioters to surrender following the worst violence in 20 years.
Beijing said that 10 people had been burnt to death during a day of unrest, while Tibet's government-in-exile in India warned that the number could be much higher.
In a statement from its northern India base, it said: "We have unconfirmed reports about 100 people had been killed and martial law imposed in Lhasa."
The government said it was "deeply concerned" by reports "emanating from all three regions of Tibet of random killings, injuries and arrest of thousands of Tibetans peacefully protesting against the Chinese policy".
It added: "The recent protest reflects the true sentiments of Tibetans inside Tibet and the yearning to be free from the repressive Chinese regime."
It called on the United Nations to stop the "human rights violations" in Tibet.
A Chinese tour operator and other people in Lhasa contacted by AFP said the tanks and armoured personnel carriers were patrolling the city.
Authorities in Tibet offered leniency for rioters who turned themselves in by Monday midnight.
Earlier, China's state-run news agency Xinhua said many police officers had been badly injured in clashes and that rioters had wielded "backpacks filled with stones and bottles of inflammable liquids, some holding iron bars, wooden sticks and long knives".
China's top official in Tibet, a vast region formally annexed by the country in 1951, said the protests were part of a "separatist" movement that authorities would not allow to succeed.
"The plot of the separatists will fail. We will challenge them firmly, according to law," the chairman of the Tibet government, Qiangba Puncog, told reporters in Beijing on the sidelines of China's annual parliamentary session.
State television showed dramatic footage of crowds attacking shops and stores in the capital. Chinese-owned shops, offices and restaurants were smashed and burned by demonstrators.
Tibetan rights groups, aware of the world focus on China during the build-up to the Olympics, are determined to increase pressure on Beijing over its rule in the region.
China has promised to crack down hard on the protesters but government officials will have to weigh up the damage that may cause to China's image in the sensitive months leading up to the Games.
Ping!
And yet, the Bush Admin’s State Dept. removes China from the list of human rights violators. Shameful.
Dick Gere.
Looks like another “victory” for gun control. None of the Tibetans seem to have firearms. All of this protest was done with clubs, iron bars and rocks.
Thanks! :o)
Theres goes the Olympic Tibetan Wrestling team..
ping.
Notice how Sky News mentions that Lhasa is the Tibetan capital city. The BBC just refers to it as Tibet’s main city.
And the MSM doesn't mention the story at all. Chi-coms double-plus good. Bad speak thoughtcrime.
“I think we should boycott the Olympics” How about reading every label and boycott anything that might come from china as well?
“China’s top official in Tibet, a vast region formally annexed by the country in 1951..”
And Hitler “annexed” France. Stalin “annexed” Eastern Europe. Marxists never attack and enslave, they “annex,” says the stupid leftist merdia.
If a person leads a mob into Sky News, slaughters half the people there and claims the buildings as their own, has it been “annexed?”
what with exiting new sports like kill the tibetan
Before 911 we had hate crime law. This opened the doors for the enemy to attack us with impunity, because it became not only unpc but illegal to say war against islamo-fascism.
The enemy manipulates our domestic politics and downrates our values, or, rather, reverse them, so as to make the enemy’s attack on our soil or abroad legal. What is happening in Tibet is legal and was in direct “retaliation” for dropping China from the list of human-rights violators.
When tomorrow, the American man is made illegal, via amnesty for illegals and Hillary’s feminist labeling of them as submissive rape objects, it will be over. Rocket day will be legalized by the whore of Babylone herself.
Impossible, The USA just gave China a human rights thumbs up. How dare those unarmed monks ruin the olympics with their lies /s
Something really needs to be done about China and the way they treat their citizens... Not like they’d listen to anyone, unless there were some way to hit them in their pocketbooks — not likely people are going to boycott them, except individually that is... I try whenever I can.
Prayers for all the victims — may all the Chinese and Tibetans someday know true freedom!
It’s not like the threat of communism was over with China and the Vietnamese Gov’t still around... Sad...
Maybe Reverand White needs to experience life in China and take Michelle Obama with him.
A witness account here by Western tourists.

"Oh my God. Oh no. That's crazy. One hundred people are trying to stone one man. A man was trying to cross the street with his motorcycle - they were trying to stone him but it's so crowded I can't see whether they got him or not."
"The residents are very angry. They are throwing stones at anyone who is Han [Chinese] or from other minorities like the Hui, who are Muslims. It seems like it's ethnic - like they want to kill anyone not Tibetan.
Here we have seen people trying to stone anyone they can - Han and other minorities, not foreigners. The Tibetans had stones and knives. I saw Chinese people running away - there was nothing they could do.
"Oh my God. Someone has a gun in front of me. There's a group of about 20 people - two of them have handguns. They are walking the street. They're shooting. They didn't have uniforms, but the way they were in a group I thought maybe they were police. They went down the street and the first one fired, that's for sure - I think the others did; there was so much noise I can't be sure. Then some of the citizens threw stones, but not at them - in the other direction. So I don't know if they were police or maybe Tibetans.
"I have just been out to get my things. We are staying at the hotel tonight. There are still people on the streets but only Tibetans - if they see anyone Chinese they throw stones. "Three times people raised their arms and then when they saw I was white they stopped it. The thing that surprised me most was that I saw no police or soldiers.
"I saw three people assaulting a man - I was 50 metres away, but I think he was Chinese. They kicked him and then one man had a knife and used it. He was lying on the floor and the man put the knife in his back, like he wanted to see he was dead.
I think annex is a technical term. There might be other uses for the term. But annexation means the formal incorporation of a new territory into a given country. Hitler annexed the Sudetenland and Austria into Germany, but he never annexed France. Stalin annexed parts of Eastern Poland into the Soviet Union, but he never annexed Eastern Europe in its entireity.
In our case, Puerto Rico isn't part of the United States proper. So it hasn't been annexed. But California was incorporated as a state, so it was annexed. As far as I know, annexation is a pretty neutral, technical term without any ideological baggage.
Maybe we should think about outsourcing our mexican border security to the Chinese. I’ll bet that drug running, drunkin’ driving road killing, etc., would end in a hurry.
What you might have been taught in China's schools, Chinese are not a race. These are nationalist riots, not race riots.
RIP...
...and China needs to get the hell out of Tibet.
I'd bet not. The drugs would still come in, but the Chinese would confiscate the drugs and set up their own distribuion networks. They'd probably get contaminated with lead in the process.
Whatever you might have been taught in China’s schools, Chinese are not a race.
Geez...we have a live ChiCom troll here who claims that the ChiComs are peaceful and the lamas are the “disingenuous violent ones” after all.
What tripe - anybody who is even partly familiar with Tibetian history knows that the ChiComs have perpetrated the most horrible atrocities incl. artillery shelling of Tibetian towns, forced abortions, and resettlement of Tibet with Han Chinese. You paper over all of this by quoting the Guardian - a left wing source and ChiCom cheerleader, if there is ever one.
Are you a retread of famed ChiCom troll on FR, pganini?
And here we have yet another deluded Indian chauvinist bringing the motherland to American shores, one H1-B and family visa at a time.
I was describing the utterly ridiculous angle people are approaching the riots of March 14-15 in downtown Lhasa. What happened on the ground is a race riot by Tibetans against everyone non-Tibetan. What is happening in fantasy land is that Chinese police are killing demonstrators. When in fact they haven’t done anything yet but contain the riots to one part of the city and let the riot burn itself out. The dead are not Tibetan protesters (rioters) but Chinese and others murdered by Tibetan mobs.
‘If a person leads a mob into Sky News, slaughters half the people there and claims the buildings as their own, has it been annexed?’
No then they are labeled ‘terrorists’.
Terrorism, it’s a growth industry...
‘As far as I know, annexation is a pretty neutral, technical term without any ideological baggage.’
It is just to convienent to use it instead of INVADED.
Would he feel ‘oppressed’ ?
You are either pganini or gogoman (two former ChiCom trolls on FR)....no doubt about it.
Is Tibetan Monk-Killing now an Olympic sport?
Also, perhaps ethical colleges, municipalities, companies, etc. could divest from China, as happened re South Africa in the 1980s.
And we should probably train a liberation force, like the 'Lincoln Brigades' during the 1930s Spanish Civil war, as close to the Tibetan border as practicable.
And Bush continues the Klinton legacy of boosting China’s economy by giving them every measure of special treatment they can think of. China will win a future war with America because we’ve given over most of our industrial production capability. Can’t fight a war if you can’t get steel and can’t get the production lines going because you gave it all to the enemy.
Very weak. Nobody will come to the aid of Tibet, not even those who sport 'Free Tibet' bumper stickers on the back of their Volvo wagon.
First place to begin - Chinese products at WalMart. In most cases involving the ChiComs, market forces speak louder than all else.
Agreed. This occupation of Tibet is the compelling reason to boycott the Olympics being held in China.
China is a friend of No one. The Dragon does NOT care about individuals.
I am not going to watch the Olympics this year. Thats gonna hurt too, I just love the whole thing. But NOT this year, not with China.
>Can’t understand why Reagan didn’t put and end to the China BS<
Because he wasn’t told to do it, that’s why.
“Annex” is a Marxist eupemism to hide invasion, slaughter, murder and slavery.
China didn’t “annex” Tibet, it invaded a peaceful country and destroyed it. And no, Tibet didn’t invite the ChiCom murderers in to save it from a theocratic dictatorship, which is another lie used by the communist pigs to justify the Tibetan slaughter.
Sure , like the UN will do a d-mn thing to help Tibet.
WE MUST START TO FIGHT BACK AGAINST THE CHICOMS. FIRST THEY KILL THOUSANDS OF CATS AND NOW THEY ATTACK TIBET. BOYCOTT CHINESE STUFF, VERY HARD TO DO, BUT WE MUST START DOING IT. OTHERWISE THE CHICOMS WILL GET MORE AND MORE POWERFUL. TAIWAN AND JAPAN ARE NEXT......
