Your screen name and the mention of Pasadena brought to mind an almost forgotten evening of a 1965 commute from work:

I worked the second shift at Royal Jet in Pasadena and lived in Burbank just blocks from the 101 and 5 freeways; leaving work one night just after buying my 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix (yes, they did make one), I saw before me the emptiest stretch of smooth road that ever had crossed my youthful eyes.

Pressing hard on the accelerator as I reached the crest of the on ramp, I watched as the tachometer swung swiftly up its arc to waver for a moment at 6500RPM, then pulled back to second, smashed savagely flush again with a pained and tingling foot as I topped the rise reaching for 6000 and climbing to stab third gear with a knuckle-denting dashboard glance and imagined my cheeks balooning outward like some early astronaut.

As the speedometer desperately tried to catch the now near orbital Tach until just as I was about to drop to fourth and leave the runway, the tiniest of incipient Santa Ana dry air announced itself and my attention was brought back to the surging red line painted across the green-tinted speedo glass in front of me, now past the markers and buried deep in the ashtray.

With a grudging gulp and an escaping sigh, I saw the quest to test my beautiful beast brought home to rest as the moon nudged its nose just above old Chief Pontiac’s chrome likeness to be reflected in the satin-black gleam of the shimmering hood as my right foot came back to earth.

I never did find out how fast that car would go; tripower 4-speed, low-restriction exhaust, 2.92 rear end - the ultimate sleeper limousine.

Just last week the LA Times ran a story about an illegal bringing in $36k a year CASH from stealing from recycling bins in Pasadena.

That poor illegal innocente claimed to be paying $2300.00 a month for her casa. That's 27,600 bucks a year for rent.

So she would still have $9,000 to spend on luxuries, like food and the band aids she needs from digging in the trash trying to give her children a better life.

Ha ha.
