Obama and His 'White Grandmother'
Wall Street Journal ^ | 3/18/08 | James Taranto

Posted on 03/18/2008 1:15:35 PM PDT by CA Conservative

Barack Obama took the stage this morning to give what was billed as a "major speech on race." It was, of course, an attempt to rescue his campaign from the revelation that his so-called spiritual mentor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, espouses a virulently anti-American and antiwhite worldview called "black liberation theology."

<--snip-->

What Obama is evading is that this "profoundly distorted view" is not just some passing emotion. It is what Wright himself, in the "talking points" page of his congregation's Web site, describes as "systematized black liberation theology." As we noted yesterday, Wright credits James Cone of New York's Union Theological Seminary with having undertaken this systematization. Here again is Cone's description of black liberation theology:

"Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community. . . . Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love."

Why isn't anyone asking Obama if he agrees with te tenets of black liberation theology? If this is the philosophy taught in that church, the problem goes far beyond the few clips of Rev. Wright's sermons...

Rescue is right. I didn’t see a rescue today. I guess his speech was about giving his supporters something to point to in the coming days when the questions continue to get asked and not answered.

Does he plan on attending this church in the future? Of course he does. It’s 8,000 votes for him, in the pocket. Oh wait, it’s his chance to be close to the man who lead him to Jesus.

Its taught in Wright's church and the problem goes well beyond a few video clips on YouTube. It goes to the very core of Wright's worldview.

Racism is a private matter. My grandma was a racist and so is Wright and who am I to blame them? I'm now convinced Obama doesn't get why the public was so disturbed.

Obama's 20 year of silence in regards to this venom is defeaning.

in the coming days when the questions continue to get asked and not answered.

I think that any awkward questions which are asked between now and Nov will be answered with: "It was in the speech! Didn't you listen?? We're not through that again! It's old news! It's over!"

"Obama said this morning, "I have asserted a firm conviction--a conviction rooted in my faith in God and my faith in the American people--that working together we can move beyond some of our old racial wounds, and that in fact we have no choice if we are to continue on the path of a more perfect union."

But if he cannot speak out unequivocally against the public, organized bigotry of his spiritual mentor, how can he possibly live up to this promise?"

You can put a fork in this turkey. Like Mort Kondracke said yesterday, Obama might survive the Primary but he won't win the General Election. IMHO Obama is D.O.A. in the General Election

The important thing is to not focus on the speech per se, but continue to pass along the information to potential voters, family and friends included.

The only way to help folks look beyond the superficiality of the speeches is to show the cold hard facts. I’ve posted a group of 7 videos that shows a LOT about this guy in several places on FR today.

There might well be more (good AND bad) in Wright’s rants. And there might even be some frame that shows the youtube clips were taken “out of context.

Except the church has taken the sermons offline rather than share them with the public. So it looks like a coverup.

Hardly an honest church when it comes to dealing with this issue openly.

His grandmother would have to have been raised in the early decades of the last century. Obama thinks it is therefore acceptable for his pastor to give public anti-American racist rants in 2008? Have we learned nothing?

Plus Obama attributes all of this, white and black racism, to corporate greed and class warfare. This was a deeply left wing speech.

That is the bigger problem with this church. Liberation theology in all its forms boils down to socialism. This guy is a far lefty masquerading as a moderate unifier. So far a bunch of gullible white people are buying it.

Back when Romney’s religion was the issue, I was approached for a “man-on-the-street” opinion. The questioner was excited when I revealed that I was Catholic. She was a somewhat dumbfounded by my answer: “Obama’s church should be much more frightening to people than Romney’s.” Needless to say, I didn’t make the cut.

Our first thought was that it was pretty low of Obama to exploit his (still living) grandmother in this way. Is it really necessary for the whole world to know about her private expressions of prejudice? Doesn't simple decency dictate that a public figure treat embarrassing facts about loved ones with discretion?

I think this thing of throwing his grandmother under the bus to save his own skin may end up being a pretty big deal ... probably not in the MSM, but on the Internet, talk radio, maybe late night comedy.

The more you think about it, the more seaminess it oozes.

From James Taranto's article:

As we noted yesterday, Wright credits James Cone of New York's Union Theological Seminary with having undertaken this systematization. Here again is Cone's description of black liberation theology:
Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love.

Throughout the early 1990's during the Latasha Harlans, Rodney King and OJ Simpson cases, local talk radio here in L.A. was rife with black venom and hatred of the type spewed by "Rev." Wright. I heard it on radio and saw it in the streets where I live and work. So Wright's screed did not shock me. However, this so-called black theology, as expressed in the above quote, packs an enormous wallop.

Wow! This is something way beyond hatred. This is a militancy almost at the level of jihad-spewing Muslim clerics.

If anyone should have doubts Barack Obama subscribes to a similar view of the United States of America as does his pastor, Jeremiah Wright, then his open refusal to wear the Stars and Stripes lapel pin and his publicly announced decision to not offer a salutation during playing or singing of the National Anthem ought settle any questions.
