Republican state Senator Jeffrey Denham will face a recall election later this year after the secretary of state certified the petitions seeking the vote.
Denham's 12th Senate District includes all or parts of Madera, Merced, Monterey, San Benito, and Stanislaus counties.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will schedule the recall election, which will be held between 60 and 80 days from Tuesday.
Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, a Democrat from Oakland, has supported the recall effort. He has been critical of Denham for refusing to support last year's state budget during a lengthy deadlock.
Opponents needed to collect 31,084 valid signatures and turned in more than 61,000 to the secretary of state's office.
The recall qualified after a random sampling of the signatures.
Jeff Denham is the victim of a coordinated Dem attack. I hope this backfires on them [Dem].
Aarrrggh.
Spoken by a Stanislaus County native.
Don Perata is a doofus. That’s why he rose so high in California Democrat politics.
Call to arms...
How ya doin’ EGGS?
Denham is my senator and if memory serves correctly, he carried his last election by over 60% in a district where the Dems drew the boundaries to make it a Dem district.
This is gonna backfire on the Dems once again.
So a Republican state senator doesn’t agree with the Democrats over the budget and they now demand a recall election? At a minimum the Democratic party should pay for the new election. And the voters should give Denham a bigger win than he had before.
Almost as bad ... He voted against the state budget.
It should be illegal for any politican to participate in the election, recall, campaign,or otherwise interfere with same of in the district of another.
Gasp!!!
I admire Denham for standing firm on the budget, but he’s pretty moderate/liberal on everything else. I guess that makes me indifferent to this whole recall effort.
This is crazy!
It seems to me now is the time for a whole lot of letters to the editors, pointing out how misguided our liberal legislators are for putting us in this fiscal mess and spending an inordinate amount of effort to try to oust one of the few guys that was trying to protect them from their own stupidity.
Nah he just played it safe on some bills prior to his previous campaign. He's a conservative at heart, though he does tend to steal other people's cigars. We all should get out and walk a precinct for him some weekend. (I'll let everyone know via the CA announcement board.)

Assemblys Proposed Budget Only Intensifies California's Fiscal Problems By Senator Jeff Denham, 12th District.
As a State Senator, I took an oath to uphold the State Constitution. That means a budget that balances every year. I understand that the decisions I make, and the way I vote, doesnt just impact me. It also doesnt just affect the 850,000 constituents in the 12 th Senate District that I represent. My votes impact everyone one of us who lives in this glorious State. So, when the Assembly in the wee morning hours, throws together a budget package, I find it outrageous that they would expect the Senate to approve their budget without a blink of the eye. Its ridiculous that some of my colleagues would wheel and deal and settle with a lame agreement, so they can continue their planned vacations for summer break.
Senate Bill 77 (the proposed budget bill) has no new taxes or fees, provides a General Fund reserve of over $3.5 billion, and funds many programs that are important to Republicans. When you put it that way, I guess some people could see that as a positive. But, when you take a deeper look, this budget is a no-win budget for current California residents or future residents like our childrens children. I would have felt guilty passing todays debt onto our children, and their children.
SB 77 promises increased funding for lots of programs. However, it leaves the state in a $699 million deficit. And, spending decisions contained in this budget will result in General Fund operating deficits that exceed $5 billion in 2008-09 and will continue higher for following years. Its unconscionable that this budget would propose to take away the teachers tax credit, particularly given that another part of this proposal would also give tax breaks to Hollywood moguls and airline companies...
Watch carefully who finances the campaign. Keep your eye open for New Majority money. Those folks in Orange County are AC/DC as long as they get their slice of the General Fund.
