Ronald Reagan's Speech Announcing the Strategic Defense Initiative
Human Events [text of speech] ^ | 21 MAR 08 | President Ronald Reagan

Posted on 03/21/2008 4:13:02 AM PDT by fifthvirginia

The subject I want to discuss with you, peace and national security, is both timely and important. Timely, because I've reached a decision which offers a new hope for our children in the 21st century, a decision I'll tell you about in a few minutes. And important because there's a very big decision that you must make for yourselves. This subject involves the most basic duty that any President and any people share, the duty to protect and strengthen the peace.

As part of the initial team, headed by Gen. Dan Graham, for “High Frontier”, this speech brings back so many memories of this project.

I miss Mr. Reagan. We sure could use him right now.

Hunter to lead colleagues to Europe for ‘Star Wars’ (Duncan Hunter/Reagan Archives- 1985)

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Coronado, will lead a group of eight other congressmen to Europe later this week to lobby leaders there on behalf of President Reagan’s proposed space-based nuclear defense system.

Hunter said yesterday that he and the other congressmen will meet with legislative counterparts in France, Germany and Great Britain to brief the Europeans on Mr. Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative, the so-called “Star Wars” program. Hunter said they also will discuss Soviet violations of the SALT II arms treaty and “how the Soviets have used those violations to their advantage.”

Hunter, noting the upcoming summit meeting between Mr. Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, described the recent visit of Gorbachev to France as “very successful” and said his American contingent will be “trying to present the other side.”

The SDI has been opposed by many European leaders, but Hunter said his group, scheduled to leave Thursday night and return Oct. 15, will emphasize the importance of the missile defense system to them, not just to the United States.

Hunter, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, will be joined by two other committee members, Rep. Norman Sisisky, D-Va., and Rep. Solomon Ortiz, D-Texas, and by Republican Reps. Henry Hyde of Illinois; William Hendon of North Carolina; David Dreier of La Verne, Calif.; Bob Dornan of Garden Grove; Tom Delay of Texas; and Bob Smith of Oregon.

The State Department will pay expenses of the three Armed Services Committee members, while the Department of Defense will pick up the tab for the others, Hunter said.

Excellent speech, we sure could use a dose of Ronald Reagan about now.

I recently began reading the Reagan Diaries- gives a behind the scenes account of ‘80s politics and the challenges that he faced from his perspective. Truly a great man and a great president.

Reagan easily gave 100 speeches that were far more inspiring than the Greatest Speech of All Time Obama gave this week. And Reagan speeches had actual content.

Rep. Duncan Hunter has been a leader since first entering congress. He has done, and continues to do, many good things while serving his country. This can not be said for many in those "hallowed" halls.

The treatment this great man received in the past year is abominable! He is one of the very few great patriots while also being a politician. I will miss his positive influence and good work in that cesspool aka D.C.

Thank you for posting this article. I missed it last July.

That is because, Duncan Hunter took an oath when he signed up to protect our country from enemies without and within. He may be retired from the military, but he took that oath seriously and is honored to be bound by that oath.

Well, we had a chance to have that "dose" for the next 8 years, in the man Reagan chose to lead his SDI initiative -- Duncan Hunter.

Which is exactly what I was thinking when I wrote the previous post. GMTA and all that! ;*)

My heart aches when I look at what could have been and what we have. Ugh!!!

Duncan Hunter is still a Congressman. Everything he ran on he has still not abandoned. He is still working on implementing those initiatives. But the media still keeps him from coverage.

Yes, I realize this. I was referring to the current lot going into the '08 election. ;*(

I do know what you meant. You just gave me an excuse to let lurkers know that he didn’t present empty issues and he is still passionately pursuing them.

Winning the Cold War with one speech and not firing one shot.

When history remembers Reagan a century from now, this is what will be his longest lasting legacy. Stepping away from the idea of mutual destruction, to one of protection.

My first vote as a citizen was for this man, I have never looked back on that decision and we will not see his like again.

My best years in the Air Force: working as the PM for IR sensor technology from 1985 to 1992 under President Reagan, Sec Def Casper Weinberger, and SDIO Director Gen Abrahamson! Those were great days!

Oh we saw him alright, in Duncan Hunter. A dying breed. And there were those among us on this forum who shot him down in favor of a far lesser man. Perhaps they will live to rue the day.

and as I recall there were a large number of scientists, including one particular organization (name unrecalled), opposed to SDI which surprised me at the time since I always thought scientists were interested in making the impossible possible. How wrong they were!!!

Thinking of those jokers reminds me of todays scientists promoting the Global Warming charade.

Hi Calpernia: I just received this note from Duncan Hunter:

Dear Friend,

During my Presidential campaign, you honored me with your support. I will never forget it. Now my son, Duncan, is back from three tours o duty in Iraq and Afghanistan as a U.S. Marine...and he’s running for Congress.

I watched him campaign for me throughout America and talk about the need for a strong national defense, border control and conservative values. I quoted him so much that I knew one day he would run for Congress. He will be the first combat veteran from the war in Iraq to serve in the U.S. Congress.

I hope you see the same principles in him that I see: patriotism, conservative values, and a fighting spirit to take on the liberals. And I hope you will help him.

With thanks,

Duncan Hunter

So I hope we can all get behind Duncan D. Hunter for Congress. No matter who wins the Presidency, we need men like the Hunters in Congress more than ever before.

Please send your generous contributions to:

Duncan D. Hunter
P.O. Box 1545
El Cajon, CA 92022-9903

Thank you all.

Reading this speech, it was great to realize that the threat President Reagan kept refering to, the Soviet Union, is no longer a threat. At least, not in the sense it was back then.

It also reminds me that, except for Duncan Hunter, China, is building it’s arsenal and operating largely unchallenged as the new threat to freedom.

Complacency will lead to our downfall but at least we will have cheap goods in the meantime.
