Any idea how many in the US, where all the fuss is, are living with HIV?

Where all the fuss is? What are you talking about? AIDS is a relatively minor public health problem in the US. Relatively small numbers have it, and those who do benefit from anti-retroviral drug cocktails that can often drive the virus into remission.

Contrast that to Botswana, were upwards 40% of the adult population are HIV+. That's what I'm talking about, that's what I'm concerned about. There are entire nations that are being depopulated. And not because of gays in the United States.

I’m just guessing here, but I’d be willing to bet you don’t know the transmission rate of HIV from female to male, vs male to female or male to male.

The transmission rate depends on what kind of sex you're talking about. The transmission rate for anal sex is identical, regardless of whether it involves a woman or a man. Some sexual practices popular in southern Africa apparently also increase the rate of HIV transmission. But the abstract rate is still largely irrelevant. The hard numbers of infected people -- including numbers of infected women -- I think are far more relevant.

It wasn't conservatives cheering them on. At least they limited themselves to the companies involved and didn't try to shame John Q Public.

No, but they still demanded resources funded by the American taxpayer to go after the tobacco co's.

They also used aspects of the shady Clinton Justice Dept. to twist laws and railroad the cases through. Much to the happiness of a large Democrat benefactor -the American Trial Lawyers Assn. Smokers were stripped of any responsibility in the matter.

Up next: Junk food producers and fast food restaurants.

That’s not killing a virus, technically. Not in the sense I think 50sDad meant, I think, but I don’t want to put words in his mouth.

Upon revisiting 50sDad's inquiry, I believe you are right.

But to answer the question: the only way we've killed viruses is through radiation in vitro...but never in vivo.

I’m so sorry about your mom’s illness and death...please accept my condolences.

One thing I might point out...people who get lung cancer, either innocently or through lifestyle choices, cannot pass it on to anyone else....that would indicate how VERY different it is from HIV.

Thank you! It was very hard to go through, having someone try to link her death with HIV is unbelievable to me.
I couldn’t STOP what happened to her NOR was it preventable as HIV is all the way preventable.

That doesn’t mean I don’t care about the suffering an AIDS patient goes through.

Mom and I were close.

This person needs to get OFF the cancer excuse and stick with the HIV argument on its own. He won’t though because, by it self, His argument will not stand.

Sadly, the treatment protocols for lung cancer haven’t changed in decades. A few new drugs, that’s all. You’d think with the tobacco settlement, there could be some real research, but I understand that’s all gone toward funding social engineering.

Money spent on AIDS is a waste of money

The knowledge gained in field like virology and human immunology is endless. The pursuit of a vaccine or "cure" is not a waste.

Are you saying that AIDS statistics would not be affected AT ALL by any changes in behavior?? Well, well, I’ll tell my best friend’s ghost. He blamed himself for his choice to leave his wife and baby daughter to come out of the closet. He he hadn’t had sex with men, he still would have gotten and dies of AIDS. He thought his family’s pain at his illness was his fault. Well, maybe he’ll be able to rest in peace now.

Judith Anne, He does seem to be fixed on Africa for some reason. This is a country where ADULT men think that gang-raping baby girls will cure them from AIDS! WOW, Alter Kaker, tell us how many more BILLIONS of dollars we need to send down there to teach these monsters the real truth. GANG-RAPING BABY GIRLS DOESN’T CURE AIDS!!!! WTFU!!!

Quite honestly, we might as well be trying to teach a monkey to build a computer. They are third world mental retards, always have been and always will be no matter how many billions you throw at them. They continue to breed and overpopulate their country when they cannot even feed themselves. How much money does it take to teach an adult to put a condom on a penis? What is the minimum I.Q. score needed to grasp this task? Take it as you will, I don’t care. Yes, most of the HIV/AIDS in Africa is spread through hetero sex.

I know name-calling is not tolerated here and I’ll probably be zotted for this, but you’re an idiot if you can’t see the lack of common sense contained in your arguments.

The Statistics on Homosexuality and its Effects
Some statistics about the Homosexual lifestyle:

” One study reports 70% of homosexuals admitting to having sex only one time with over 50% of their partners (3).
• One study reports that the average homosexual has between 20 and 106 partners per year (6). The average heterosexual has 8 partners in a lifetime.
• Many homosexual sexual encounters occur while drunk, high on drugs, or in an orgy setting (7).
• Many homosexuals don’t pay heed to warnings of their lifestyles: “Knowledge of health guidelines was quite high, but this knowledge had no relation to sexual behavior” (16).
• Homosexuals got homosexuality removed from the list of mental illnesses in the early 70s by storming the annual American Psychiatric Association (APA) conference on successive years. “Guerrilla theater tactics and more straight-forward shouting matches characterized their presence” (2). Since homosexuality has been removed from the APA list of mental illnesses, so has pedophilia (except when the adult feels “subjective distress”) (27).
• Homosexuals account for 3-4% of all gonorrhea cases, 60% of all syphilis cases, and 17% of all hospital admissions (other than for STDs) in the United States (5). They make up only 1-2% of the population.
• Homosexuals live unhealthy lifestyles, and have historically accounted for the bulk of syphilis, gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, the “gay bowel syndrome” (which attacks the intestinal tract), tuberculosis and cytomegalovirus (27).
• 73% of psychiatrists say homosexuals are less happy than the average person, and of those psychiatrists, 70% say that the unhappiness is NOT due to social stigmatization (13).
• 25-33% of homosexuals and lesbians are alcoholics (11).
• Of homosexuals questioned in one study reports that 43% admit to 500 or more partners in a lifetime, 28% admit to 1000 or more in a lifetime, and of these people, 79% say that half of those partners are total strangers, and 70% of those sexual contacts are one night stands (or, as one homosexual admits in the film “The Castro”, one minute stands) (3). Also, it is a favorite past-time of many homosexuals to go to “cruisy areas” and have anonymous sex.
• 78% of homosexuals are affected by STDs (20).
• Judge John Martaugh, chief magistrate of the New York City Criminal Court has said, “Homosexuals account for half the murders in large cities” (10).
• Captain William Riddle of the Los Angeles Police says, “30,000 sexually abused children in Los Angeles were victims of homosexuals” (10).
• 50% of suicides can be attributed to homosexuals (10).
• Dr. Daniel Capron, a practicing psychiatrist, says, “Homosexuality by definition is not healthy and wholesome. The homosexual person, at best, will be unhappier and more unfulfilled than the sexually normal person” (10). For other psychiatrists who believe that homosexuality is wrong, please see National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality.
• It takes approximately $300,000 to take care of each AIDS victim, so thanks to the promiscuous lifestyle of homosexuals, medical insurance rates have been skyrocketing for all of us(10).
• Homosexuals were responsible for spreading AIDS in the United States, and then raised up violent groups like Act Up and Ground Zero to complain about it. Even today, homosexuals account for well over 50% of the AIDS cases in the United States, which is quite a large number considering that they account for only 1-2% of the population.
• Homosexuals account for a disproportionate number of hepatitis cases: 70-80% in San Francisco, 29% in Denver, 66% in New York City, 56% in Toronto, 42% in Montreal, and 26% in Melbourne (8).
• 37% of homosexuals engage in sadomasochism, which accounts for many accidental deaths. In San Francisco, classes were held to teach homosexuals how to not kill their partners during sadomasochism (8).
• 41% of homosexuals say they have had sex with strangers in public restrooms, 60% say they have had sex with strangers in bathhouses, and 64% of these encounters have involved the use of illegal drugs (8).
• Depending on the city, 39-59% of homosexuals are infected with intestinal parasites like worms, flukes and amoebae, which is common in filthy third world countries (8).
• The median age of death of homosexuals is 42 (only 9% live past age 65). This drops to 39 if the cause of death is AIDS. The median age of death of a married heterosexual man is 75 (8).
• The median age of death of lesbians is 45 (only 24% live past age 65). The median age of death of a married heterosexual woman is 79 (8).
• Homosexuals are 100 times more likely to be murdered (usually by another homosexual) than the average person, 25 times more likely to commit suicide, and 19 times more likely to die in a traffic accident (8).
• 21% of lesbians die of murder, suicide or traffic accident, which is at a rate of 534 times higher than the number of white heterosexual females aged 25-44 who die of these things(8).
• 50% of the calls to a hotline to report “queer bashing” involved domestic violence (i.e., homosexuals beating up other homosexuals) (18).
• About 50% of the women on death row are lesbians (12).
Homosexuals prey on children.
• 33% of homosexuals ADMIT to minor/adult sex (7).
• There is a notable homosexual group, consisting of thousands of members, known as the North American Man and Boy Love Association ( NAMBLA). This is a child molesting homosexual group whose cry is “SEX BEFORE 8 BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.” This group can be seen marching in most major homosexual parades across the United States.
• Homosexuals commit more than 33% of all reported child molestations in the United States, which, assuming homosexuals make up 2% of the population, means that 1 in 20 homosexuals is a child molestor, while 1 in 490 heterosexuals is a child molestor (19).
• 73% of all homosexuals have had sex with boys under 19 years of age (9).
• Many homosexuals admit that they are pedophiles: “The love between men and boys is at the foundation of homosexuality” (22).
• Because homosexuals can’t reproduce naturally, they resort to recruiting children. Homosexuals can be heard chanting “TEN PERCENT IS NOT ENOUGH, RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT” in their homosexual parades. A group called the “Lesbian Avengers” prides itself on trying to recruit young girls. They print “WE RECRUIT” on their literature. Some other homosexuals aren’t as overt about this, but rather try to infiltrate society and get into positions where they will have access to the malleable minds of young children (e.g., the clergy, teachers, Boy Scout leaders, etc.) (8). See the DC Lesbian Avengers web page, and DC Lesbian Avengers Press Release, where they threaten to recruit little boys and girls. Also, see AFA Action Alert.
The homosexual agenda.
• The homosexual agenda includes desensitizing the public: “The first order of business is desensitization of the American public concerning gays and gay rights.....To desensitize the public is to help it view homosexuality with indifference instead of with keen emotion. Ideally, we would have straights register differences in sexual preferences the way they register different tastes for ice cream or sports games....At least in the beginning, we are seeking public desensitization and nothing more. We do not need and cannot expect a full ‘appreciation’ or ‘understanding’ of homosexuality from the average American. You can forget about trying to persuade the masses that homosexuality is a good thing. But if only you can get them to think that it is just another thing...then your battle for legal and social rights is virtually won” (25).
• Part of the homosexual agenda is to get the public to affirm their filthy lifestyle, as one homosexual admitted in the October 1987 homosexual rally on Washington: “We are no longer seeking just a right to privacy and a protection from wrong. We also have a right — as heterosexual Americans already have — to see government and society affirm our lives” (27).
• Part of the homosexual agenda is to turn people from Christianity: “The teaching that only male-female sexual activity within the bounds and constraints of marriage is the only acceptable form should be reason enough for any homosexual to denounce the Christian religion” (1).
• Homosexuals knowingly lied (and still lie) about the 10% figure (i.e., homosexuals make up 10% of the population). As Tom Stoddard (formerly of the Lambda Legal Defense Fund) said, “We used that figure when most gay people were entirely hidden to try to create an impression of our numerousness” (17).
The true number of homosexuals.
• The Kinsey study of 1948, which homosexuals often cite to say that 10% of the population is homosexual, actually says that only 4% of the population is EXCLUSIVELY homosexual. This study involved a disproportionate number of people who had been in jail for sex crimes (hardly a random sample of the population). Kinsey also did perverse studies involving young boys and pedophiles. Information on Kinsey.
• Current research shows that the true percentage of homosexuals is in the 1-2% range (15,23,26,28). Consider how small this number is when compared to most of the numbers above.
Homosexuals aren’t discriminated against in employment, so why should they be a protected class?
• The average yearly income of a homosexual is $55,430.00 (most of which is disposable because no children to take care of!). The average of the general population is $32,144.00. The average of blacks is $12,166.00 (24).
• 59.6% of homosexuals are college graduates. 18.0% of the general population are college graduates (24). Too bad they aren’t smart enough to listen to God. “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:22).
• 49.0% of homosexuals hold professional/managerial positions. 15.9% of the general population hold such positions (24). Where’s the job discrimination?
Sexual Orientation
• A phrase that has come up recently in this earth is “sexual orientation.” This is a phrase made up by homosexuals to try to make themselves look less filthy than they really are. The purpose of the phrase is to take the spotlight from what these perverts do, and put it on the notion that they are just poor, mistreated people, who simply are attracted to members of the same sex - as if they aren’t engaging in activity forbidden by God Almighty. “Sexual orientation,” as used today, has nothing to do with sexual activity (yeah, right), but only refers to who or what a particular person is attracted to. If you think that people of other “sexual orientations” are just fine, let’s see what other “sexual orientations” you would necessarily have to accept as wholesome and pure. If you’re not going to discriminate based on “sexual orientation”, then you must not discriminate against any of the following. If you discriminate against any of these, you’re a hypocrite. These “sexual orientations” are generally known as “paraphilias”, and are mental disorders - just like homosexuality used to be (29).

"I think the biggest push should be on prevention: educating people about HIV/AIDS and about how they can prevent or limit transmission, just as I agree we should teach kids to eat right, exercise and warn them about the dangers of smoking."

Every argument you have given so far educating people in preventing AIDS is futile, because behavior isn't a factor.

Thank you more than I can say. What an informative post!

I knew very well about the “African treatment” for HIV; since the thread was about the quest for a vaccine, I limited my comments. That same “treatment” was supposed to be effective for syphilis once upon a time in this country.

*sigh*

"But why treat AIDS differently on FR than lung cancer, heart disease, or, frankly, mesothelioma (a nearly 100% preventable disease that you can avoid by simply not inhaling asbestos fibers)?"

At LAST, you ask an INTELLIGENT question! At LAST!

I don't know the answer to why AIDS gets so much more attention and funding and political capital than far more virulent and easily communicable diseases.

If you ever find out why AIDS is so much more important, let us all know.

Oh, I see. You're not a US citizen are you? You've spent the past ten years so obsessive compulsively pursuing US money to cure AIDS in Africa you haven't paid attention to the fact that AIDS has funding has become a political platform all by itself as well as a welfare system for researcher's who'd work themselves out of a job if they find a cure, is that it?

Yeah, we need a vaccine. You need to acknowledge that YOUR side is ALSO interfering with finding one - while screaming that those of us who are collectively FUNDING your cure are cruel, heartless, uncaring and cheap. we have FAMILIES to raise and bills to pay and need SOME of our money for THAT - while at the same time, in it's collective greed for money and power and stop going all arrogant elitist on all of us.

You folks must be mistaking me for someone else. I'm certainly not the one who keeps on bringing up the gays.

Starting with post 11, you have done nothing else. Do you think we were all born yesterday, here? And you have not apologized to me, I'm surprised you have the courage to come back and lie some more.

Every argument you have given so far educating people in preventing AIDS is futile, because behavior isn't a factor.

Huh? Education is all about behavior. You teach people what behaviors expose you to the disease and which don't.

Monogamy = good.

Unprotected sex with prostitutes in sub-Saharan Africa = probably not so good.

That may seem like common sense, but in an area where many people lack even basic education, and where lots of myths abound, that message isn't always getting through.

Yeah, we're just not compassionate enough. The HIV pandemic, esp. in Africa is probably the moral equivalent of genocide, and it's probably OUR FAULT. Remember the Mariel boat lift? I blame myself. /sarc

None. However, the diseases on your list aren’t the only ones in need of attention. HIV isn’t particularly virulent either. Which is which it requires fluid transfer to spread. People don’t spread it by sneezing in public.

I didn't mention the gays in post 11. Try again.

The previous posters were sending the message that people with HIV/AIDS (the vast majority of whom live in Africa) didn't "deserve" a vaccine. That's what I called a moral test.

And you have not apologized to me

Apologize to the woman who accused me of being gay because I'm not pro-AIDS? Ma'am, I suggest you keep waiting on that apology.

HIV isn’t particularly virulent either.

So? It's a disease that has killed 25 million people and infects another 40 million. The fact that it isn't particularly virulent means that it should be fairly straightforward to contain, with a combination of aggressive treatment options and education. That's what we've done in developed countries, and it's what needs to be done in the third world.

What post was that?

Behavior modification=most FReepers belief. Including mine. Which is exactly the OPPOSITE of many of your arguments during most of the thread. Or what they seemed to be saying. I don’t know...seems you’ve obfuscated and relativized to the point that the entire thread is about useless.

He does seem to be fixed on Africa for some reason. This is a country where ADULT men think that gang-raping baby girls will cure them from AIDS!

That comment underscores the need for education on two fronts:

1. Africans need to learn real medical information. In the absence of education, some believe nonsense like the idea you mentioned above.

2. You need to learn that Africa is not a "country." I suggest going out and buying yourself a map might be a good start.

Alter Kaker, tell us how many more BILLIONS of dollars we need to send down there to teach these monsters the real truth

So you're telling me that Africans, all billion of them, are "monsters"? Really? Have you, I don't know, ever been to Africa? Have you ever met an African? That seems like a kind of sweeping statement there. How do you know that all Africans are monsters? Is there a monster test that you can readily apply to an entire population?

That, in addition to being a lie, makes no sense at all. None.

Now, which post was I supposed to have done that nonsensical thing? Tell me. Or apologize, or just let us all think you're lying. Again.

Taking all the focus off the GLBT community and it’s involvement and responsibility in spreading AIDS and making it a *it’s all about the poor starving children in Africa* issue is, in effect, defending the gay community.

It started with them. It can stop with them.

Huh? No, I've been consistent. Nobody is going to go out and baby sit millions of people and set curfews and tell them who they can and cannot have sex with. In the absence of that, there are two things we can and should do. I have been consistent on both of those

1. There needs to be more education, so people know what behaviors are sound and what are inherently risky. If, knowing that, they insist on making poor choices then at least that's their fault. Right now, many people in many parts of the third world just don't know enough to make informed decisions.

2. In addition to education, I support efforts to come up with treatments for HIV/AIDS. There are an awful lot of people who are already infected, and an awful lot of those have become infected through no fault of their own. This second prong seems just common sense to me.

I don't see where I've contradicted myself, nor do I see what's so radical about what I've been proposing. Maybe you can enlighten me.

So maybe it's you who are obsessed with the gays. I haven't mentioned them. You can go through all of my posts going back five years and won't find me ever fighting for the "gay agenda," but here I am talking about the biggest public health crisis in the world today, and all you see are the gays. This has nothing to do with gays. This has to do with 40 million people, the overwhelming majority of whom don't live in the United States (or any developed country), and aren't gay.

If you want to debate gay teachers or gay "marriage" or whatever, go ahead. But I'm not having that debate with you -- that's not what this thread is about, and not what I think HIV/AIDS is all about either.

FReepers aren’t as stupid as you think they are. You’re not fooling anyone.

AIDS/HIV funding and research in this country isn’t about finding a sure for those ESTIMATED infected in Africa and pretending that it is is intellectually dishonest.

It’s about a spineless PC whine and grovel response to the GLBT community that anyone who doesn’t wholeheartedly support their lifestyle is a *hater* and *intolerant*.

Now My Mother was in the 20% that got Lung Cancer with out smoking and being in a smoke free family, environment.

In the United States, about 80% of lung cancer cases are smoking related. Worldwide, the number is slightly over 90%. I cited the worldwide figure. Either way, the vast majority of lung cancer cases are smoking related.

A majority of the rest are also preventable -- related to particulate inhalation, asbestos inhalation, radon exposure, etc. Your mother may well have been in the exception, but my point wasn't to deny that there are non-tobacco related lung cancer cases, but rather to emphasize that, like HIV-AIDS, preventative lifestyle changes could eliminate a majority of lung cancer cases.

WE CAN NOT KEEP ALL LUNG CANCER from happening! RIGHT???

No, of course not. But we can keep 90-95% of lung cancer cases from happening, and that's pretty good.

...but here I am talking about the biggest public health crisis in the world today,...

Bigger than cancer? Diabetes? Malaria? TB? Dysentary? Let's see some data to support that statement.

You don't think there aren't diseases in Africa that claim more lives than AIDS/HIV is alleged to, that don't deserve the funding?

If it was really all about saving lives in Africa, there'd be way more research on all those other tropical disease that afflict millions of Africans every day, not just AIDS.

AIDS funding isn't about saving lives in Africa. It's about absolving people of their responsibility of practicing responsible behavior.

Sometimes I think we get sock puppets or seminar posters here. I think some of them are paid to do it, too.

I’m done with the thread. So far, nothing new has been offered, just the same old lame posts, time after time. From what I have seen of AK’s style, he’ll then toss out some more bait, to see if I really mean it.

Note that he has NOT replied to my request to name the posts he denigrates. That’s because they don’t exist, and his entire experience on the thread has been to offer lies.

So long. I seriously doubt any FReepers were fooled, or impressed by the stuff he posted. At least not guaging by the PMs I got.
