A successful Manhattan based financial planning firm President is tired of being called a Yuppie. In the "natural evolution of the Hippie-Preppie-Yuppie progression," Chuck Failla say he has found religion. These days, more Americans not only want to live well, but want to also do good (or at least do no evil), he says.
"They still love money and conspicuous displays of affluence. But now, the way to achieve status is to trade in the Beemer for a Toyota Prius, spend $50,000 putting solar panels on the roof, shop at Whole Foods for $7-a-bunch organic endive, and acquire a chic new wardrobe fashioned entirely of hemp, soy fiber, and recycled tires," Failla says on the term he coined.
"The term Scuppie [was coined] one day at my Manhattan office when a coworker overheard one of my phone conversations. She asked whether I had picked up a new client. When I explained that I was doing some pro-bono work for a homeless organization, she shot a skeptical glance at my Armani suit and Rolex, and responded, only half-jokingly, that she couldn't believe a 'Yuppie scum' like me would do anything for free. That momentarily threw me for a loop, but then I had an epiphany. I responded to my accuser with a Hey, it's entirely possible to be socially conscious and desire upward mobility at the same time."
And hence a new Website was born, scuppie.com. The Website is froth with belly-busting caricatures with arrows pointing to pockets with the bubble note exclaiming "Credit card that donates a percentage of payments to a tropical rainforest fund" or "100% organic cotton shirt - no emblems of reptiles or mallet wielding horsemen" or even "Hair held in perfetly-disheveled-but-just-right-place by non aerosol all natural mousse - tested on 'hair stylists' not animals."
But don't forget the Scuppie Manifesto. The die hard statement that all organic views are "unalienable rights." Accordingly, "Looking, acting and being a Scuppie isnt just for politically correct movie stars, shaggy-haired high-tech gazillionaires and those lucky few who can afford to endow entire hospital wings in Africa or convert their Porsche Cayenne SUVs to run on hydrogen. Neither is social consciousness only for impassioned ascetics who distain flush toilets, subsist on tofu and brown rice, and yearn for the eventual overthrow of the capitalist system. You dont have to be a zealot or a dilettante, just somebody who want to make the world a better placeand to be comfortable, well-fed and stylish while doing it."
A Scuppie can even get defined by Fallia's site. "SCUP·PIE n. (Socially Conscious Upwardly-mobile Person): 1. A person who desires all the best life can offer and strives for those goals in a socially conscious manner. 2. One who is dedicated to the pursuit of peace, happiness and cash (not necessarily in that order). 3. Someone green -- i.e. one who understands the love of money does not preclude the love of nature...and vice-versa."
The older Generation can no longer say the next gen has nothing to be remembered by. The next gen has its own coined term to fall in line behind Baby Boomers and Gen X and Gen Y. Now we have the Scuppie.
"Carbon Credits..."
I guess my Grandpa was a Scuppie.
He LOVED Life, worked his @ss off to leave all of us better off than when he started out in life, he never wasted a dime, grew most of his own food, hunted, fished, was an excellent steward of the land he owned, served on the Lake Association Board to make sure our lake remained pristine, hung out laundry to dry (solar & wind power, LOL!), cooked from scratch, baked his own breads and sweets, composted...and was richer in cash and spirit than these Scuppies could ever HOPE to be.
I tire of people that need to pigeon-hole everyone. Are they so devoid of spirit that they need a “title” to know who they are? Yeesh!
Yes, because while they will drive their Prius is to parties, events, and when cameras are rolling to brag to the other scuppies about how green they are, the other 8 cars in their garage will be SUVs and luxury sports cars they drive the rest of the time.
The cars they drive when they are trying to get laid and show off their wealth which will be 99% of their driving time.
ROFL! You’ve hit the nail on the head! (I’m all for social consciousness, but most of these liberals are deluding themselves, IMO.)
LOL. That is perfect.
LOL — Heck, that’s just regular old “life” in Wisconsin. :) (And people wonder why we moved back to the Mid-west? LOL) Seriously, though there were a ton of people like that in their generation - not so many nowadays.
They were just living well, and enjoying life — these liberals want some kind of a medal for their deeds.
They spend all this money on consumption of FRIVOLOUS crap,
then demand that taxpayers provide “charity” through taxation,
just to make themselves feel good about “caring for others”.
Scuppie? No ... just Scummie.
“...these liberals want some kind of a medal for their deeds.”
No kidding!
I’m stealing your tagline...:)
LLLLLLOOOOLLL!!!
Nor in their lives. Hollow, surface-impressions, Gaea bound lives.
Self aggrandizement disguised as social consciousness. How many of these hollow people actually do good for their fellow human beings and keep it secret, between them and God? ... None, I suspect, because they do what they do to substantiate their godhood thus they need others in their circle to know they do these things for they don’t trust God to keep the books straight on their behalf.
Why didn’t he just go with “scumpie”?
(Pronounced “scump-e”, not “scum-pie”, as tempting as it might be.)
Actually, what has been driving the "Scuppie" phenomenon has been all of these "socially conscious" west coasters who have moved to NYC in droves since the 1990s, and are bringing their skateboard and granola outlook to Manhattan and much of Brooklyn.
TRANSPLANTS GO HOME!!! ;-)
