Is He American Enough? Obama battles a dangerous campaign storyline (Eleanor Clift)
Newsweek ^ | March 21, 2008 | Eleanor Clift

Posted on 03/21/2008 1:20:28 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Some 50 delegates were reportedly poised to unite behind Barack Obama if he had won by even 1 point in Texas. He lost the popular vote by 100,000 ballots, and now we learn that 100,000 Republicans voted for Hillary Clinton, probably not because of some change in party allegiance but because they thought she would be the easier candidate to beat. This kind of strategic voting often backfires (think Ralph Nader). The Texas crossovers are winners. By helping to prolong the Democratic race, they can claim credit for weakening the eventual nominee, whoever it turns out to be.

Obama has had a terrible time since Hillary sprang back to life after winning the Ohio and Texas primaries on March 4. The speech he delivered on race relations in Philadelphia was a valiant effort to address the story about his former pastor's inflammatory rhetoric. Having resisted for so long being typecast as the black candidate, Obama could no longer hold off plunging into the debate that still divides so much of America.

By most accounts, Obama did a masterful job aligning the promise of his candidacy with the grievances expressed by both blacks and whites, noting in particular how the anger of working-class whites over affirmative action and welfare formed the Reagan coalition. But the cable-news noise machine doesn't easily let go of something so juicy as the anti-American rhetoric served up by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. The now-retired pastor did what the Clinton campaign had been unable to do--put Obama in a box he doesn't need to be in, one that brands him as a candidate primarily of black aspirations. The cable commentators kept pounding away, but in another universe, the one inhabited by Obama's base--the millennial generation--his Philadelphia speech became the most-viewed video on YouTube this week with almost 2.5 million hits so far. Maybe, just maybe, the cable critics and conservative pundits are talking to themselves.

At an election-watch panel Thursday morning organized by the American Enterprise Institute, a questioner using journalistic shorthand asked if the uproar over Reverend Wright "has legs." The consensus among the panelists was that Obama might have stanched the bleeding among Democratic primary voters but that the issue will continue to dog him in a more virulent form with questions about where his true loyalties lie. Is he American enough? He's new on the national stage, and people are prone to believe the negative campaign already underway on the Internet alleging various falsehoods. This belated scrutiny of Obama bolsters Clinton's argument that she's been vetted and there are no shoes to drop. You can almost hear her aides, sotto voce, saying "we told you so." Hillary's comment that it's "un-American" for Obama not to endorse a do-over vote in Michigan builds on the narrative that he's not one of us. She's got a point. The Republicans made John Kerry French; imagine what they can do with Obama.

The audience and even the moderator of the AEI panel seem startled when Norm Ornstein, a resident scholar with the venerable think tank, declared Obama the solid, even overwhelming favorite to be the Democrats' nominee. He ticked off what he calls "the fundamentals." Obama has won more states, more delegates and is 300,000-plus votes ahead of Clinton even if you add to the mix the disputed Florida primary she won. If her votes in Michigan were added--giving her a win in a state where Obama's name wasn't even on the ballot--the popular vote would be a wash. The moderator, Jim Glassman, was skeptical, and challenged the premise. What if Clinton wins Pennsylvania by 20 points? Wouldn't the superdelegates move to her because she has the momentum? Isn't that the whole point? "We're not there yet," Ornstein explained. "He would have to be bloodied far beyond where he is now" to justify awarding Clinton the nomination if she's lost the delegate count and the popular vote. Her campaign's inability to secure revotes in Michigan and Florida is a huge blow. The superdelegates are there to make sure the party doesn't commit political suicide. There are nine other states voting in addition to Pennsylvania--including North Carolina, the 10th largest state in the country, where Obama is favored to win. Clinton's path to the nomination is "doable but it remains an outside shot," says Ornstein.

Hillary has every right to stay in the race. If Obama's candidacy implodes, with or without her help, she'll be on hand to pick up the pieces. There will be more twists and turns before the race is settled by the superdelegates, probably some time in June. The news late in the week that low-level contract employees at the State Department had been rifling through Obama's passport file gave the cable noise machine something else to obsess about--on a subject that millions of Americans could identify with, government invasion of privacy. (Subsequent reports maintain that Clinton, too, had her privacy breached in a similar fashion.) Coupled with the coveted endorsement from former rival and current superdelegate Bill Richardson, Obama seemed once again on the upswing. Given the unsettled nature of the race and what's at stake for the party and the country, not to mention the Clintons, Obama should enjoy the respite. It won't last long.

Has anyone here ever seen the media so blatantly behind and rooting for one candidate? Must be white guilt or something. Oh, and the notion that "the anger of working-class whites over affirmative action and welfare formed the Reagan coalition." is a crock of you-know-what, as anyone that was involved in GOP politics in the 80's will gladly tell you. I'm starting to think Rush was right to stir this pot.

Dream on. Cable news is so rating driven they don't stay with any story more that a couple nights unless it's pushing the rating needle into the red zone.

The only time I’ve seen anything like the way the MSM is pushing Obama is JFK in 1960. The big three nets of the day so hated Nixon they turned Kennedy, a womanizing drug addict, into prince charming. His wife became a brunette Marlyn Monroe.

But it wasn’t close to what’s going on now. The MSM have become out-and-out cheerleaders.

The youtube deal was a farce. Obviously “obamaites” were pushing the video, and making numerous comments, over and over, repeating themselves and what was suspect, all the comments were positive. I tried to leave a “negative” comment and it wasn’t published. Even youtube finally figured it out and took it (the particular video that was being manipulated to the top of the page) and pulled it. And judging a speech by it’s youtube appeal is ridiculous. Often the crazier videos make it to the top and get the most hits, i.e. “just leave Britney alone” weepfest by the overtly gay video blogger.

Well, “color blind” means something different to the left.

Just as “diverse” does.

When a school is 99% black & Hispanic, it’s called “most diverse”.

To a leftist, “diverse” means “non-white and non-Western”.

If Obama's candidacy implodes,

Eleanor is not as dumb as many of liberal talking heads, here, she clearly entertains the possibility that Hillary may still win. In finance such a position is called a hedge. In her femi-Nazi heart Clift still probably would rather have Hillary win, but she would rather ride the MSM Obama media bandwagon, rather than risk the censure by race card playing Democrats who publicly stoned her femi-Nazi sister Geraldine Ferraro for siding with Hillary and giving the political reality of why she did.

They would need his SSN to check on his Selective Service status, as I had intimated here several times in the last month or so. If he didn’t register for the draft, they’ll have some conservatives beat him about the head & shoulders with it, is my guess. Of course, it could be one of a million other things, as well. The democrats read these pages on a daily basis.

The thing that distorts the process is having three people running for the presidency who are running for the power of the office, not for the good of the country. We have a choice of voting for one because he’s black, one because she’s a woman, and one because he was a prisoner of war; the process was distorted in order for him to be a candidate.

All three are, in reality, democrats, although one brags about an R after his name. There is a large segment of the population that is not represented this go-round.

This “mischief” has appeared to fill the void. The process was distorted by the democrats before “this kind of voting” happened by Republicans.

Wonder of wonders, Clift admits Wright spews anti-American sentiments. Hell of an admission for Ms. Kneepads-for-a-face.

Michelle Obama giving a speech on C-Span a week or so ago in which she told the audience with great enthusiasm that Baracky grew up in Indonesia and has relatives in Nigeria. "Isn't it wonderful to think that someone who spent his boyhood in other countries and understands them might become president?"

One wonders how they can so blatantly distort the fact that Obama grew up overseas and hasn't a clue what America is like for those of us who grew up here. YOu know, Americans. Wish some media person would pick up on that and play it over and over. It was really shocking.

Obama told everyone how he could not "disown" Wright.

He has already kicked him off his campaign, removed him from his inter-faith council, and is already referring to Wright as his "former" pastor.

Obviously the Senator is in the process of "disowning" the Reverend.

Yes we have seen, difference now is the internet is now much more mainstream.

It is easier to expose the hypocrisy, people are more informed.
Now all we have to do is get people to be honest. Logic not emotion.
Shed the shackles of govt education.
I say this because, I find that between MSM reporting and my education I still occasionally make snap judgement based on story as reported by MSM.
On further reflection I see the spin the MSM is trying to advance.

Out of school for 25 yrs and still for the spin, I should be ashamed.
But I am not because I have recovered my ability to see logic.

hopefully others will also.

I read an article today about why Obama wouldn't agree to a MI do-over and the main reason was because 100,000 RATS wouldn't get to vote. The reason was because they voted on the Republican ballot!

The RATS voted for Romney to keep him in and screw up the primary that should have ended his campaign.

I hope every Republican in PA votes for Hillary to screw the RATS into a huge convention war.

ahhh - I guess I missed the part where she mentioned the outrageous parts where he starts out admitting to the big lie of "I wasn't there" "I never heard" = with saying yes, indeedy, he was there, and he heard.

Why is no one calling him on this lie?

There's no mention of his outlandishly equating what Geraldine Ferraro said - which was NOT racist! But since it came out of the mouth of a white person = a "Typical White Woman?" = it's racist, and she got dismissed....anyway, equating that and something he perceives his grandmother said after being accosted on the street by a panhandler demanding money = and after being given the dollar he demanded, demanding more - she was afraid. - (whom she identified, after questioning as = gasp - "black" - putting these two women into the same category as his bigoted, racist, white-hating, America hating surrogate daddy, Clift passes right over...nor does she mention his additional slip of his racist tongue when, in answer to why he dissed his gramma like that, calls her a "Typical White Woman" and goes on to allude it being a 'systemic' problem with whites!

This is the biggest group of racists in the country - but none dare call them that - they're "black"

Actually, there are some other firy black ministers that are calling them exactly that...
