I hate and despise those “If you can read this thank a teacher” bumper sticker. That arrogance perfectly sums up to me the whole problem with the system. I kind of want a smart alecky answer-back bumper sticker but I don’t quite know what it would be.,/i>

I hate those "Thank a teacher" bumper stickers too!

Every time I have asked a parent of a highly achieving institutionalized child what their home life was like, in every case, these parents were doing everything I did as a homeschooling parent!

The real teaching is being done by the parent in the child's early years. As the child grows older, the parents are creating a learning centered home, and the child is educating himself!

Thank a teacher! No! Thank a parent!

It is the parent who sat with that infant, toddler, pre-schooler, and young schooled child and taught that child to read. These parents have taught phonics even if they were unaware of doing it. It is the parent who check the homework for neatness, completeness, and comprehension. The parents made sure that the child learned his math facts. It is the parent who turned off the TV and restricted video game time. Parents took these kids to museums, and hired tutors at the first sign of difficulty,,,etc.

ALL academically successful children are homeschooled. If they attend school, they have been "homeschooled" in the home as infants, toddlers, and pre-schoolers. If they are older schooled children, they are "after schooling". Essentially, the government is sending home a free curriculum for the child and parent to follow.

I graduated in 95; by then, the old “defeat the bully by single combat and never have to worry about it again” were long, long, long gone by then, and the early days of the modern humiliation campaign had just started.

Me too, and I graduated in 1989. The crap didn't stop after I broke one kid's hand, the crap didn't stop after one caught me in the bathroom and I used my knee to cram his testicles somewhere up around his kidneys. Eventually one of their crew cut my brake lines...good thing the kid didn't know anything about cars and I got home on my rear brakes.

Of course, sometimes the right language can help, especially when you when you're an adult dealing with an adult. I was getting harassing phone calls related to my newspaper columns back in 2004. I ran a column saying we should all have some hard questions for Jim Wasser, the Kerry "band of brothers" guy and union flunkie, when he came to speak in Freeport. I got a call from a guy with his number blocked, talking smack and finishing up with "You'd better watch what you write about Jim Wasser."

I felt a cold rage come over me. This guy wasn't just calling me to insult me like the other idiots who had called, he was sending a threat into the home where my wife and children live. "You listen to me," I said, "because I'm going to say this one time. If you or anyone else tries to make good on that threat, you will need a coroner when. I am finished with you." There was silence, and he hung up. I never got another phone call, so I think they were coordinated somehow by local Dems.

Hi Meek. I can well imagine so many reading it. I just read the article but none of the posts.

Heartbreaking to read and it’s getting worse and worse. The parents and schools pamper instead of discipline.

I recall a time when you got a spanking at school and then again at home. This wasn’t AT school but too many parents believe their child’s version and let them get by with things.

Maybe cellphone photographing will help stop much of this.
