Leading Democrats seize on milestone death in Iraq
The Hill ^ | 3/24/08 | Klaus Marre

Posted on 03/24/2008 10:39:25 AM PDT by mdittmar

Top Democrats on Monday reacted to the 4,000th U.S. death in Iraq by calling for a change in policy.

Democratic presidential frontrunner Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) called the event a “grim milestone” and advocated a new course on Iraq.

“It is past time to end this war that should never have been waged by bringing our troops home, and finally pushing Iraq's leaders to take responsibility for their future,” Obama stated.

His rival for the nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.), said at the onset of a speech on the economy that the news of the 4,000th U.S. death in Iraq is “heartbreaking” and noted that thousands of others have suffered from injuries.

“As president, I intend to honor their extraordinary service and the sacrifice of them and their families by ending this war and bringing them home as quickly and responsibly as possible,” Clinton vowed.

Meantime, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said that “Americans are asking how much longer must our troops continue to sacrifice for the sake of an Iraqi government that is unwilling or unable to secure its own future.”

With the Iraq war having taken a backseat to the economy as the most pressing issue, Pelosi sought to tie the two together.

“Americans also understand that the cost of the war to our national security, military readiness and our reputation around the world is immense and that the threat to our economy – as the war in Iraq continues to take us deeper into debt – is unacceptable,” the House speaker stated.

Can we hear a rebuttal, an opposing view—preferably from the brave troops who are there, fighting and risking their lives, well aware of the dangers, and completely committed to finishing their mission?

I’d love to see the MSM have the guts to have an active duty soldier’s rebuttal immediately follow the beat-a-retreat Dhimmicrats in their unbiased “reporting”.

Still awaiting the delayed shipment of the back-ordered "4000" celebratory glasses, members of the media have to walk around in pairs wearing the recycled glasses from when the 2000th casualty milestone was reached.

Dems have spent the last 6 months ignoring events in Iraq lest they have to confront the successes resulting from the “Surge”. Yet they must be watching at some level to have noticed the 4,000 death. Now they can get back the unreal debate about who can pull out of Iraq the fastest, or who was against the invasion of Iraq first.

They were just sad they didn’t have 4000 casualties beforehand, to coincide with the 5th anniversary.

They should add the yearly total murders in Philly, DC, LA and a couple other Lib hangouts and see how they match up with Iraq yearly totals.

4,000.

10% of the number of Americans killed in traffic accidents each year (40k).

20% of the number of Americans dying of the flu each year (20K)...

Not belittling the deaths- their sacrifices should always be appreciated and honored, but let's get some perspective here.

Grim? Several million freed Iraqi’s is ‘grim’? One of hte world’s MOST violent human rights violator’s and brutal dictators dead and gone is ‘grim’?

And what Senator Barack would constitute ‘cheery’ to you? More mass graves? More people being shoved through shredders alive? More people being thrown off rooftops alive? More people hanging by their arms while they are set on fire alive? More innocent civilians raped so brutally by Saddam’s thugs that they died from the wounds they recieved during the rapes?

Senator Barck should shut hte hell up or go to Iraq, stand over a mass grave where tens of thousands of bodies lie, and tell the victims families that this war should have never been fought by America!

Yeah, let’s get some perspective....if your silly attempt to marginalize the situation were based on population and per capita data, there would be over 5 million traffic deaths per year and close to three million flu-related fatalities per anum.
Ummm, do you see the flaw in your logic yet?

Don’t pass off the sacrifice of these heroes as anything less than tragic, please.

Losing the war by quitting will not honor them at all. It will say that their sacrifice was pointless, and that will be a bitter hole in their hearts for the remainder of their lives.

It will add immeasurably to the grief of the grieving.

43,443, the total traffic deaths in 2005, which is over ten times the total deaths for all of Iraqi campaign. Or in other words during the 5 years of the Iraqi conflit we have lost approximatley 200,000 people in highway traffic accidents in this country. Compare that to 4,000 military deaths in Iraq. Every life is important, however we must see the proportion and that some things need doing for the good of our country. Thank God we still have brave volunteers to protect us. Perhaps the Democrats need to campaign for us to pull off the freeway!
