Fred Thompson heads back to Hollywood 21 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson is returning to his career as an actor and signed a deal to be represented by the William Morris Agency, the talent group said on Monday.
Thompson, a former U.S. senator from Tennessee, is best known in the entertainment world for portraying New York District Attorney Arthur Branch on the television crime drama "Law & Order," but has appeared in numerous films and TV shows over the years.
The 65-year-old actor and politician was a candidate for the Republican nomination for U.S. president before dropping out of the race in January after garnering little support. Arizona Senator John McCain is the presumptive Republican nominee.
Thompson gained notoriety as minority counsel for the Senate Watergate Committee investigating the scandal that led to the resignation of U.S. President Richard Nixon in 1974.
His first movie role was in 1985's "Marie." Thompson has since appeared in many films, including "Die Hard 2" and "In the Line of Fire," frequently as politicians or other authority figures. In 2007 television movie "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee," for instance, he portrayed President Ulysses S. Grant.
Thompson won a seat in the U.S. Senate from Tennessee in 1994 and served until 2003. He began his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 2007.

Fred does not seem interested in the VP Slot.
Best Fred Thompson role?
I gotta go with Admiral Painter from Hunt for Red October.
“Russians don’t take a dump, son, without a plan. “
Forward to the past, Fred!
Fred was a great blocking back for McCain.
You mean he didn't lie and pander like the other candidates?
Good luck Fred in your endeavors.
IMHO, life’s too short to be President of the United States where half the folks are liberally short of brain cells.
“Thompson gained notoriety as minority counsel for the Senate Watergate Committee...”
Notoriety?
Gee, there sure is no bias in that news story...
(sarcasm)
He had better ideas than all of the other candidates put together. He just wasn't a flashy candidate, and even many conservatives here said that they liked his ideas, but they didn't think he was telegenic enough to be President. He couldn't fight that, because he is what he is. If they weren't interested in ideas, there was nothing he could do.
I wonder if he’ll do a cameo on the Clinton sitcom?

William Morris announced that they've signed big Fred to do TV and movie roles. Before he tried to make it as an actual president (after being a real Senator from Tennessee), he spent years playing big-shot pols and most recently the District Attorney on "Law & Order." Of course, there's still buzz that could be cast in the role of Veep for John McCain. |

Fred ushered in McCain. Thanks Fred, the true conservative.
Fred you had no b*lls and helped your buddy, McCain. You also scre*ed your conservative backers .
What a jerk.
Thompson was a sensible man with sensible positions who was not as hungry as we require our politicians to be. He did not seem interested in jumping through hoops, political spin, or selling himself. He was in other words a lousy politician who would have made a better President than any of the remaining three candidates. But the American people may not get a person who makes a better President than Fred but they will get what they crave, a better politician who will spin and lie to them again, again, and again. Fred may not have had what takes to get elected, but the American people may not have what it takes to choose a sensible man with sensible positions over just another conniving political hack. The blame is not on Fred, but on those who passed him over for what we got.
Fred, the non telegenic actor.
The degeneration and circus atmosphere of the election process has turned it from a sober Constitutional right and privilege into a joke that is more of an actuality than any contrived fiction in the movies or on TV.
I'm afraid that in the future our presidential candidates from both parties will be from the bottom of the barrel (like now) because conservative, principled men like Thompson won't run.
Break a leg, Fred.
Leni
FDT is a very honorable man. He does not deserve these disparaging remarks. His campaign floundered at times but his message was clear.
McCain has ascended from the difficulties of the other candidates. The polls showing McCain as the only candidate capable of defeating the rats ultimately doomed the other candidates. I will support McCain given the alternative is unthinkable.
Should have never left in the first place, loser!
Brilliant analysis!
Not really: he just didn’t distinguish himself from the othrs. He seemed uninterested in running after all: like it was an audition of which he grew bored.
Yea, just when one thought it was safe to dump the lesser-of-two-evils mantra, along comes Oprah’s Obama!
Some people think fame and notoriety are synonyms, but they are not.
Baloney.
With the exception of Hunter, none of the other candidates were worth a bucket of warm spit.
Maybe he can play a conservative.
He didn’t seem to interested in the President spot either. And now he’s turning to Hollywood while the country needs conservatives most. Very disappointing.
Actually, it was Romney and the Huckster who caused us to get McCain.
Romney’s expensive vanity candidacy, backed by a core of good fellow Mormons, who were blind to his falsity, drained all the worker bees and air time.
Huckster, propped up as the MSM’s favorite easy kill, was too stupid to know he was being used as a pawn, and drained off the pro-life voters.
Wahhh! Fred was a sad joke who fooled principled conservatives into believing him.
They all gave out money and support and got screwed because of his mother being ill, which, I might add, was an excuse to get out of the race and let McLame win.
How sad.
Exactly. For example, without Huckabee in the SC race, Thompson would have had a shot at winning there, and the dynamics of the race thereafter might might have been very different.
I liked the “idea” of Fred too...but...he was just a foil for McCain. Fred had no fire because he wasn’t supposed to.
Liberal McCain has the fire, if you want to call it that. Now, me, I never trusted Fred, and I am glad I didn’t. He didn’t fool me.
Fred was never a serious candidate. Never. Really sad.
He just screwed it up for other conservatives, real ones.
Fred didn’t ‘usher in’ McCain. McCain was already in it when Fred entered. Fred got into the race because he didn’t see another conservative candidate who wasn’t pandering to some constituency or another. There were several conservative candidates whose votes stepped on each other, so McCain came out ahead. It wasn’t Fred’s fault. He had some great ideas that were ingored by many conservatives, most, it seemed, who were looking for the Second Coming, or a Preacher in Chief, rather than a good solid Presidential candidate.
Fred Thompson was nothing more than a diversion in the primaries..
Well, another person who gets it.
WHAT other conservatives?
Duncan Hunter? I love the man, but he only has fringe appeal and is a protectionist.
Sorry, all the “foil for McCain” stuff is foil allright -— tinfoil hat.
Fred always laughed when folks seemed underwhelmed by his acting. He never pretended to be an Oscar quality actor; he just played his parts, and played them basically all the same.
Oh come on, get real. I liked what Fred said he was for too. Only problem was, he didn’t believe it enough to stand up for it like a conservative warrior. That may be because he was drafted rather than enlisting.
Fred is an okay guy. He is not a leader, except in the movies!
I just can’t jump on Fred ....he was my choice, I still think he was the best candidate running. He was also the first and only one I ever contributed money to their campaign. Yes, I was disappointed in the way his campaign was run , and his heart maybe wasn’t in it...but I sure don’t blame him for wanting to go back to his life.....I’m a great fan of Law & Order, and I miss him not being on that program anymore.I do wish him and his family well...I’m only sorry he’s not going to be our candidate..I would have loved to vote for him....as it is, I’m out in the cold...a old time Conservative with nowhere to go.
Thanks alot for taking a dive in the Prez race Fred.
How bout returning the 50 bucks I sent?
I didn’t have a problem with him not lusting after the job. I respected that immensely.
Well said.
How short our revisionist memories are.
Yeah, he’s such an “ok” guy that you call him a jerk.
Nice.
GREAT post!!
Good Lord, this was days ago. I like Fred, but you have to admit, he didn’t fight too hard for you or for me.
Wonder why that is? Now don’t hold other greivances against me, we are talking about Fred here.
I would have been for him if he would have had the staying power. I do not blame him for that. I think it had a whole lot to do with McCain.
