Punished for Patriotism

When Donald Miller of Lancaster, Pa. wore a patriotic t-shirt to school last year to support his uncle’s mission in Iraq, school officials told him to turn it inside out. When he refused, he received two days of detention, according to Yahoo.com.
The reason? There was an image of a gun on the shirt, along with the words, “Volunteer Homeland Security.” On the back were the words “Special Issue – Resident – Lifetime license – United States Terrorist Hunting Permit."
Now Donald's parents have filed a lawsuit, accusing the school district of violating Donald’s First Amendment Rights.
Lawyers for the school district said their reaction clearly fell within the parameters of the rule that “students may not wear anything to school that advocates the use of force or urges the violation of law or school regulations.”
But the lawyer for Donald's parents said that he considers Penn Manor’s position unconstitutional. He is seeking a permanent injunction forcing Penn Manor to allow young Donald to wear the shirt....

One can see where some might find this objectionable and not be anti-2nd ammendment.

I am very conservative, and I find this distasteful. I would be proud if my child wore a tee with a flag or an endorsement of our troops, but this shirt went over the line in my opinion.
Love it. Think I’d buy a couple for my teen daughters.

Unless they’re teaching in a parochial or Christian private school, one cannot be a gummint school teacher and a conservative. That’s an oymoron.

I find describing the tee-shirt as ‘patriotic’ to be ridiculous. And since it is advocating a lawless act - shooting someone - then the school is within it’s guidelines.
I remember I had a friend in high school that wore a shirt that says "Fly United", which had two ducks copulating in flight. It was hilarious, but he too was asked to turn it inside out, and today, I would agree.
Censorship? Not really. However, having taught for almost forty years, I know that kids will often try to pass off the outlandish and even obscene.
The only time I had a kid turn a tee inside out was one he bought one in Florida during spring break showing a couple engaged in sex. The blurb: Every day is hump day.
Frankly, such controversies are to me nonissues when the focus should be on academics- period.
Attention-getting can be easy. Learning is hard.
don’t mind the noise. many people who call themselves conservatives have no manners whatsoever, no concept of decorum; they don’t understand how to hold themselves above the savages whose acts they decry so loudly.
Nope. More grandstanding. Trying to push somebody else’s buttons. All I want to do is teach English. No time to stamp out brushfires caused by somebody’s irrational reaction to somebody else’s tee shirt.
I don’t just call myself one; I am one.
In the classroom, however, I do not proselytize, no do I welcome anyone else’s doing so, either liberal or conservative. No need to create problems where there are none
By the way, our failure to “catch” such things that come through our classrooms could result in dressing down at best, lawsuits at worst. I don’t care to end up on the front page of the Tennessean.

I used to do photography for schools. I continually reminded the children that they would never regret being serious about education. It’s money in the bank of life.

This students error was that he backed the wrong side.
If he had chosen to wear a shirt that gave him license to hunt American Soldiers he would have been hailed by the hateful left and the dinosour media as a great hero and all sorts of honor would have been bestowed on him.
How dare he threaten the Terrorist who seek to destroy his Country and slaughter his family.. Who does he think he is..........

Can you explain to me how when we are at War with Terrorists, that an American that would shoot a terrorist would be committing an unlawful act? Would not the terrorist gladly blow the kid up(and his entire school up) with a IED if he had the chance?
I do not understand people in this Nation that can not see that we are in a war for the very continuance of our Nation.......

Indoctrination can go both ways. I detest left-wing indoctrination; hence, I leave my right wing politics at the classroom door. Like many of my confederates at the high school level, I teach the discipline I was hired to teach. Accept it. There is no conspiracy. We just don’t have the time. The job is difficult enough without trying to add someone else’s agenda to the mix.
All I want to do is teach how to write a cogent sentence, a unified paragraph, and a logically developed essay. In 37 years, no one has approached me to plot a duplictous way to win the souls of students.
I’m not evil. Just teach English. Simple. If you want to paint that as evil, so be it.
Do you see communists around every corner? What teacher in your history made you so bitter?

There are some here who simply reject the idea that anyone who teaches in the public schools could possible be anything other than evil or gay or communist or whatever. They have an “agenda” to uphold and can’t deviate from it.
I applaud you for the job you’re doing. It ain’t easy!
I've known quite a few myself, in fact, I have a sibling who teaches, and she's no liberal!

Not a problem. I would refer you to any United States military member that has served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Most parts of Asia and many areas of the EU. I am sure they would gladly provide instructions. means and methods.
