The Selected Civil War Photographs Collection contains 1,118 photographs. Most of the images were made under the supervision of Mathew B. Brady, and include scenes of military personnel, preparations for battle, and battle after-effects. The collection also includes portraits of both Confederate and Union officers, and a selection of enlisted men.
An additional two hundred autographed portraits of army and navy officers, politicians, and cultural figures can be seen in the Civil War photograph album, ca. 1861-65. (James Wadsworth Family Papers). The full album pages are displayed as well as the front and verso of each carte de visite, revealing studio logos, addresses, and other imprint information on the approximately twenty photographers represented in the album.

These are fabulous pictures.
I have one of my great grandmothers dad playing the “drum”, he was about 12, his uniform did not fit, he really looks so small.
He was part of a troop in “Sherman’s march to the sea”.

Thanks for sharing the photo, martin_fierro.
I am trying to check the veracity of the legend that sideburns were named after Gen. Burnside.

To view the stereopticon images cross eyes and focus on the center image.
This may be better with a pair of reading glasses on.
The image of the Monitor is really a good stereo image.

Thank you. I was just in Falmouth, VA this weekend and had breakfast at Amy’s in an old warehouse on the Rappahannock. Some of these same pictures of Confederate Falmouth are on the old brick walls.
I really enjoyed your post. You might enjoy Drew Gilpen Faust’s “Republic of Suffering—Death and the Civil War.”

My great-great grandfather was a Confederate cavalryman in Nathan Bedford Forrest’s command. He survived the war and died in 1923 at the ripe old age of 84. He was born in Germany in 1839, and came to the United States when he was young, settling with his family in Louisiana. He still had his saber when he died.
