Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News call for mayor to step down 3/24/2008, 10:12 p.m. EDT The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — The city's major newspapers on Monday called for the resignation of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick in the interest of what's good for Detroit after he was charged with perjury and other offenses.

Editorials urging Kilpatrick to quit were posted on the Web sites of the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News.

The Free Press said: "If Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick loves Detroit as much as he says he does, he has to quit." The editorial added: "Detroit cannot afford the ugly spectacle of Kilpatrick clinging to office while facing felony charges."

The News said: "To make things right Kilpatrick should step aside and accept responsibility for his improper conduct in the police whistleblowers scandal."

The editorial also said: "Now, Detroit suffers the embarrassing distinction of being led by a mayor under charges of perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office."

Kilpatrick, 37, was charged after a trove of raunchy text messages contradicted his sworn denials of an affair with his chief aide. He says he plans to stay on the job while fighting the charges.

His former chief of staff, Christine Beatty, 37, who also denied under oath that she and Kilpatrick had an intimate relationship in 2002 and 2003, was charged with many of the same offenses.

Worthy began her investigation in late January, the day after the Free Press published excerpts from 14,000 text messages that were sent or received in 2002-03 from Beatty's city-issued pager.

Now where have I heard that list of charges before? I guess they qualify his wife to run for mayor.

They have to cut a deal with her for testimony or they both will get off. No way a jury of his ‘peers’ will ever convict him, no matter what the evidence shows.

Any wonder why Detroit is a s**t-hole? We’ve had a string of mayors like this going all the way back to Coleman Young.

Fortunately there are tons of voters (juries are selected from voter registration lists in Michigan) in Wayne county, more in the suburbs than in the city, so I think the jury pool will not be so favorable to Kwame. Kwame’s only real supporters are people who are on the payroll or their family members, which are a lot, but compared to the rest of the population, not so much. Hey, he lost big time in the whistleblower lawsuit last fall. I can’t wait for this trial.

That's true (That he lost the Whistle-blower Trial) and that gives me some level of confidence. Unfortunately, that was a Civil Trial and in the upcoming Criminal trial it will only take one Juror to stop the enforcement of justice. It is very likely there will be at least one brain numbed Racial Robot to accomplish this.

Once again Democrats are pretending to be sane, rational, moral
human beings.
So they can lie their way into The Oval Office.

That's the only real reason for the political downfall of Spitzer
and Kwame.
In states/municipalities CRAWLING with Democrats/Liberals/Socialists.

After all, didn't Democrats spend nearly a decade telling us
that the sex-lives of Democratic politicians didn't really matter?

Now they sacrifice two of their golden-boys in order to get
JUST ENOUGH VOTES from religious/moral people in flyover country
that shouldn't fall for this sort of fakery.

Kilpatrick will do what he wants. No doubt if he followed his predecessors, he has enough cash stashed to keep him a couple of lifetimes. And he'll be replaced by someone equally corrupt from top to bottom.

The only hope for Detroit is receivership and to bring in some totally outside people more interested in bringing the city back to life than on continuing to suck it dry.

The establishment there is completly corrupt.

You forgot the lousy White rodents before Young. Young took a city in bad shape and flushed it down the toilet. I don’t think Detroit has had a decent (Republican) Mayor since Albert Cobo in the ‘50s. Of course, it was vastly different then. 2 million residents in the city (now below 900k) and still majority White (only about 10% White today).

Archer was slightly better than Young, but that’s not saying much. I remember he thought the cure for Detroit’s ills was to bring in casino gambling. He was on the C-Span morning show a decade ago and somebody phoned in and said, “Mr. Mayor, do you honestly believe middle class White women are going to drive down from Oakland (County) to downtown Detroit to play in the casinos (inferring they could get mugged or raped) ?” The caller hung up laughing. Archer made a face. What Archer didn’t understand is that Detroit’s problem wasn’t lack of money, but the residents themselves and the entire city’s mindset.

I was on a private political discussion board that was MI-based several years ago and we were talking about the Detroit cesspool and its chronic epidemic of racist, Marxist, crooks that have run it for decades. In chimes a State Rep. from Detroit blasting me for not knowing what I was talking about and that Detroit was a “great place”, yada yada yada. A week later, that State Rep. was indicted for a multitude of criminal charges. Hey, Detroit is a great place for those running it, since they get to line their own pockets. For everyone else, it’s a miserable, crime ridden hellhole. They’re never going to change it, because they are the problem.

There's a reference in the Detroit News to "former vice-mayor Freman Hendrix". In other sources Hendrix is referred to as "former Deputy Mayor Freman Hendrix".

Usually the “Deputy Mayor” is merely an appointee of the Mayor (glorified assistant — think of Michael J. Fox’s character on “Spin City”) but isn’t in line to the Mayor’s office. My city has a Vice-Mayor, which is a citywide elective office (they preside over the equivalent of the City Council) and they are next in line.

Freman Hendrix ran against Kilpatrick in the last election and was expected to beat him (as all polls indicated), but “miraculously”, Kilpatrick beat him (of course, we can guess as to what that “miracle” was).

Kwame’s only real supporters are the appointees and others working for him and their families, and I think they could be weeded out of the jury pool. Detroiters are feeling very disrecpected by Kwame, and they are sick of being taken by this aging hip-hop con man. Having sat on a jury at Frank Murphy Hall of Justice on a criminal case, I know what it is like to have the jury split, and I know that with a calm approach and logic, even the staunchist hold-out can be pursuaded with coherent reason. And there was actually less evidence than what Worthy has against Kwame. (We did find the guy guilty after much deliberation.) Anyway, a hung jury in Kwame’s case dosen’t make it go away. Kym Worthy will just have a retrial. And finally, all I can say in this case is I would hate to be the lawyer defending him; it’s not going to be easy.

Why would Detroit expect their mayor to be any less corrupt and selfish than the rest of the city and state’s government?

Detroit is a ghost... and Michigan is a cess pool...

I’ve been to a lot of places, and nowhere stands as a testament to poor trade and governmental polices.. local, state and federal... like Detroit.
