Alan Keyes and Ron Paul (who is still a Republican) vie for the Presidential nomination of the Constitution Party
It would clear out any of the few racist types--to the exclusion of the vast number of others who are not--that are in the CP. I have heard a few skinhead types are still in there, this could be the good purging it needs to legitimize it further.
The problem with The CP is they are late in getting on the ballot in many states and won’t be on all 50 by Election Day. Moreover, many of their supporters are in a funk since Ron Paul made it clear he wasn’t bolting. Even one of The CP’s leading candidates, Chuck Baldwin, has been opining about how wonderful Ron Paul is instead of pushing himself as a candidate. After awhile, idol worship looks immature and does not garner respect from those who might otherwise join a party. The CP has erred in leaving the door open for Dr. Paul for too long. It has further erred in allowing a nutcase like Alan Keyes to run as a member of the Party while he’s still a Republican!
Regarding AmericanInTokyo’s comments about “skinhead types in The CP”, I doubt that such is the case. Maybe AIT is referring to some of the tiny, Christian-only “patriot parties” that were combined prior to the 2004 election. The CP was not one of them. Perhaps AIT has lived in Tokyo a bit too long and needs to get back to the States and see for himself who is in The CP!
Why is he a "nutcase"? I believe the guy has a firmer grasp on the Constitution and the what the role of the Federal government should be than ANY other candidate out there. The guy GETS IT on the 2nd Amendment, the 4th, the 9th, and 10th as well.
If I see his name on the list for pres this November, I'll check it off. He was on the NH primary this year as well (along with about 874 other Rep. candidates).
How will Ron Paul vie for the nomination as he’s said he won’t run? It’s actually more complicated than that. Some people would like Roy Moore and Steve Stockman has expressed interest too. However, as a party with a national convention, the CP enjoys the finest privilege of Jacksonian Democracy-not knowing who the nominee is, as the major parties have relegated the convention to nothing more than a big long infomercial.
Will he at least pay back his campaign debts in a timely manner? The man runs on a platform that advocates fiscal responsibility—and then violates the principles he claims to uphold, running up debts and not paying them back for many years.
Heck, a person might not like Ron Paul, but at least his campaign is the only one with zero debt. Alan Keyes, who has had a history of stiffing people or treating the campaign donations as ihs own little fund, might finally be running break-even, based on last quarter’s filings, but I’d like to hear why we can trust that he won’t go on and act like he has in the past. Still, Ron Paul is a Republican and is not switching parties.
Then again, I was just thinking...I want to hear if Dr. Keyes is planning on sending me a one-time reparations check, as I’m the descendent of Union soldiers who shed blood without ever owning a slave.
And besides, the Constitution Party has devolved into a mockery of its stated purpose, having nominated Peroutka in 2004—a man who evidently can’t even run his own life or a family, yet wanted to govern the country! :-(
Unfortunately, the Constitution Party, in general, continues to be: too Calvinistic instead of being more open when it comes to religious issues, too isolationist when it comes to all foreign policy issues, and too protectionist when it comes to all trade issues. All of these things combined are what truly hurts the CP the most with the majority of the general public who truly does pay any kind of attention to what the CP is really all about. It’s truly a shame that the CP, so far, hasn’t seriously become a major political force despite the majority of conservatives throughout the U.S. continuing to be very disappointed with both the Democrats and the Republicans.
I’m a descendent of a Confederate soldier who never owned a slave. I won’t a check from Keyes and the US Gov.(oh, that one’s in the mail) Thank me very much!
” It has further erred in allowing a nutcase like Alan Keyes to run as a member of the Party while hes still a Republican!”
No he’s not:

Same date as the Pennsylvania primary. Brilliant move CP - anything that may have possibly been minor news will be completely buried by the Dem battle in PA.
Excellent!
They're all delusional nutcases. It brings to mind the old saying that "a fool and his money is soon parted".
That described me when I sent these kooks some of my money.
“The guy GETS IT on the 2nd Amendment, the 4th, the 9th, and 10th as well.”
Wasn’t he trying to get us to pay reparations to African Americans a while back? He doesn’t get it on that issue.
I would vote for Keyes if he wins. Paul is so crazy it would be impossible to vote for him.
Without necessarily disagreeing with your other comments, why do you focus on whether Alan Keyes has left the Republican Party to be able to run for the nomination of the Constitution Party? This of course describes Ron Paul. If Paul accepts the nomination of another party, he jeopardizes his own cushy seat in Congress this November as a Republican. So it is a much greater problem for Ron Paul. A Republican could run for his seat in Texas if Ron Paul runs for another party.
However, the Ron Paul fanatics are so wild about the Ole Baby Doctor that none of this will matter much. Even if Ron Paul retired from politics, was abducted by space aliens, or had died, the Ron Paul people could still be expeted to (try to) swamp the Constitution Party convention for Ron Paul — even if Paul says he doesn’t want the CP nomination. So with or without Ron Paul’s blessing, I suspect there will still be a big battle along those lines.
I don’t blame the Baby Doctor for being a typical politician and fooling the greatest number of people possible. (Groups that completely disagree with each other all think that Ron Paul is one of them. Ron Paul has them all fooled. He is just a much better P.T. Barnum than other politicians.) But I do blame the followers for being so easy to fool. (For example, as a libertarian, the Baby Doctor MUST believe in open borders, free migration of workers, and the freedom of willing workers and willing employers to contract without government interference. Yet when the subject of illegal immigration comes up, Ron Paul masterfully changes the subject to welfare spending and FOOLS people into thinking that the libertarian would do something about illegal immigration. Yes, he would: Create MORE OF IT!)
As for the Constitution Party, the observations are right that it is too doctrinaire (Is that what you meant by Calvinist?) No one in Washington, DC would know the Constitution if the Constitution chased them down the street. It has been ignored since the 1930’s, except to have its name taken in vain for things that aren’t in there.
But most of those who proclaim themselves to be in favor of the Constitution, really are not. They are for the old Articles of Confederation of the Continental Congress. They don’t want the Constitution, either. They want to reject the Constitution and return to the Articles of Confederation.
The Federal government has way too much power and ignores its limits. But arguing that the proper scope of power is ridiculously small, is not convincing. Going from one extreme to the other extreme does not win you believers among the majority of Americans. While Washington must return to “coloring inside the lines” of the Constitution, if we persuade the average person that we are nuts, with plainly false arguments, we do not help in that cause.
You may be right on all accounts.
a) Are they ballot qualified on enough ballots in enough states to signify an electoral college majority and enough to theoretically win? If the answer is "no", then it is a wasted vote because what the RINOS and detractors would say would be true, i.e. "they cannot win".
First hurdle to clear.
b) Is the candidate and platform the closest in line with my political philosophy.
This one is a no brainer. No way the Republicans under McCain this year, or the Democrats EVER are closer to my thinking, than a Conservative Alternative Candidate and Party.
c) Can this individual ACTUALLY SERVE AS PRESIDENT? Would I hire a supermarket boxboy to be the CEO of the supermarket chain? No. Then why would I vote for someone 98% of Americans never heard of, who would not have the administrative and leadership skills and experience to run the largest military in the world, the largest free economy in the world.
d) Is the candidate personally free of moral and ethical defect?
These are four hurdles my Presidential Candidate MUST clear.
As it is, nobody clears those four hurdles. I think they are reasonable hurdles. Your (and others') mileage may vary.
Nice try, but untrue. I found this: http://www.alankeyes.com/qa.php#reparations and read about this situation during his 2004 Senate run. Sounds to me like another case of pure exageration.
Your post is ripe with bad information.
The CP is not late for anything, and will be on most ballots, if not all.
Ron Paul is not running, and has made that clear to the CP’s leadership.
Your “nutcase” slur towards Dr. Keyes is just nutty.
Alan Keyes is the sanest man in American politics. It’s the rest of them who are slowly buy surely succumbing to pschyosis.
And Alan Keyes is leaving the formerly Grand Old Party.
I believe that if you knew the truth of the matter, Dr. Keyes would meet every single one of your criteria.
I’d be happy to provide you with detailed information privately if you’ll FReepmail me.
There’s a local CP guy here who has a definite ‘white power’ thing going. I’ll mail you his link if I can find it.
That crap does exist, shamefully.
IMO, Dr. Keyes is the only one who can provide the needed leaven for that bread.
Ron Paul has made it clear that he is not seeking the CP nomination. I don’t believe more than a handful are going to do anything but respect that decision vis a vis the CP nomination process.
BTW, Dr. Keyes is going to be doing a press conference in Hazleton, PA on April 15, laying out in detail his reasons for leaving the formerly Grand Old Party. It will be live-streamed on the web.
That’s funny. I feel the exact same way about the GOP leadership and the 20 years of my life I devoted to the Republican Party.
These are other things that Dr. Keyes or anyone else would have to clear with me. I.e. were they a good steward of funds they received. If you can enlighten, that would help, because I am still torn between going Third Party Conservative (which may not be viable at the end of the day), or just leaving the President line blank on my ballot this year, as I will NOT vote for McCAIN, nor either of those two other Democrat losers.
You have FReepmail.
Got it. Thanks.
