NY Gov. Paterson says he used cocaine Mon Mar 24, 9:23 PM ET

NEW YORK - Gov. David Paterson said Monday he used cocaine in his 20s and smoked marijuana when he was younger. In reference to cocaine, Paterson, 53, said in a television interview that he "tried it a couple of times" when he was "about 22 or 23."

"And marijuana probably when I was about 20," he said on the NY1 cable news station. "I don't think I touched marijuana since the '70s."

He said "more Americans have tried a lot more during that period of time and gone on to lead responsible lives and hopefully have lived their lives to their fullest."

Paterson was lieutenant governor under Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who resigned this month amid a prostitution scandal.

Last week, Paterson and his wife, Michelle Paterson, disclosed they each had committed adultery several years ago during marital strife. The couple were separated for a "couple years" at the time, David Paterson said Monday.

In Monday's interview, Paterson pointed out that he had acknowledged to a television journalist after a 2006 gubernatorial Democratic primary debate that he had used illegal drugs.

The NY1 interviewer, Dominic Carter, noted that few people paid attention to Paterson's revelation in 2006 because he was running for lieutenant governor.

What about the taxpayers (alledgedly) paying for hotel room love nests?

Isn’t that enough for him anyone to step down?

We need to pass a law barring all people who have ever smoked marijuana or snorted coke from not only holding public office but also from having any job at all.

Next: Governor Paterson wanted for murder in Arkansas.

Then: Governor Paterson indicted for tax evasion.

And: Governor Paterson deported as illegal alien.

If you took the events of the last few weeks surrounding Spitzer and Paterson and tried to sell this story to Hollywood for a movie they would laugh you out of their office. They would say these events are so ridiculous nobody would ever believe them. Truth is truly stranger than fiction.

Spitzer has good judgment in the selection of running mates, I see.

I guess that qualifies him to be a Dem Presidential nominee.

LOL. Cut the current workforce in half, then, and see how well the country gets along.

“I don’t think I touched marijuana since the ‘70s.”

That sounds like a Clinton statement. Not a definite answer.

I want a reporter to ask him if he’s ever masturbated, if he’s ever lied, what does he do with a cigar, if he’s ever been in Bosnia under sniper fire?

We might as well ask him about everything, now that he’s risen to the level of DNC presidential material.

At the time he was sworn in, somebody should have read this guy his Miranda warnings. ;>)

All of these are resume-enhancers for a Democrat. What would seriously hurt his credentials would be if he were found to be a global warming denier or to be an evangelical Christian.

If we are as serious about the Drug War as we are the WoT we should pass such a law.

Or, we can accept the fact that the majority of Americans at some time in their life used illegal drugs.

Us upstate NY conservatives are disgusted. But, downstate runs the show here. I just heard on a Buffalo radio station that only 10% of NYers want Patterson to go.

It seems they are more worried about the budget than corruption. I guess they just can’t see the link between the two. I wonder what we upstaters would have to do to succeed from Albany?

"And marijuana probably when I was about 20," he said on the NY1 cable news station. "I don't think I touched marijuana since the '70s."

Somehow, I think there is a reason he is volunteering this stuff which is not all that significant. It is a kind of foreshadowing of more shoes to fall.

He resigned for getting caught laundering money which will likely land him in jail, though I suspect his resignation was part of a plea deal.

He didn't resign because of youthful indiscretions that happened long ago.

If he had merely had an affair, or had used drugs in his 20s he would have weathered the storm just fine.

I suspect that if hiring a prostitute was his only crime, he would have been able to remain in office as well.

However, he committed more serious felonies that the press hasn't paid much attention to because they aren't as sensational as him hiring a prostitute.
