Thank God for Barack Obama. For until his "More Perfect Union" speech last Tuesday, it seems it never occurred to anyone that America needed to talk about race. "Maybe this'll be the beginning of a conversation," Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan proclaimed on "Meet the Press." According to New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, just the fact of Obama's address proves that a "national dialogue on race" is "essential." The Chicago Tribune reported that "many voters, black and white, say they were moved by Obama's speech ... which they see as a long-awaited invitation to begin an honest, calm national dialogue about race." Newspaper editorial boards agree. In the words of the San Diego Union-Tribune: "Prodding Americans to confront their racial differences is, by itself, an accomplishment of historical proportions."

The only people I see pushing for a “conversation on race” are guilt-ridden white liberals over 40 and black folks who want to use the occassion to bash whites. Thankfully, Asians and Hispanics (both of whom now outnumber blacks in my immediate area) don’t seem to care about the “conversation.”
Goldberg slams this one out of the park and on to the street. How could any sane person claim that no one has been talking about race in this country until Obama “opened the door”? It is absolute madness.

I don't think the average American wants this election to be about race - that's where this issue hurts Obama in the general.

Pretty simple really and I doubt anyone here is surprised.
Obama and his pastor don’t want a ‘conversation.’ They want to lecture, and the rest of us sit there and listen and agree with everything they say.
There is no race conversation until typical white boys are allowed to say what they are thinking without being called racist by people who don’t want to hear what they are doing wrong.

The other time-honored tradition here is the inevitable attempt at thread hijacking by a one-issue, illegal immigration opponent (as if we all aren’t or somehow need reminding):

This is a one sided talk, they speak and you listen. There is no interest in better relations because this is a thriving business for many on the other side. What would all of these reverends, and activists do if one day we all woke up to an understanding and moved on to a better place in our relationship? The sad thing is there are many that are doing great things in this cause and they are being over shadowed by these hate mongers who need this division to earn a sad living! Time to brush the dirt under the carpet and continue on in the righ direction!
According to the DOJ, there were 4,497 whites mudered by blacks vs 337 blacks murdered by whites in 2005. (we'll also ignore that whites and hispanics are lumped together in these stats). Similar ratios are present for all the years covered (1976-2005).

Rape stats show an even greater disparity:
"Table 42: Personal Crimes of Violence 2005: Percent distribution of single offender victimizations, based on race of victims, by type of crime and perceived race of offender."
Under "Rape/Sexual assaults" the survey reports 111,490 rape/assaults in 2005 in which a white was the victim.
The "perceived race" of the offender was reported as white in 44.5 percent of cases, black in 33.6 percent of cases, "other" in 19.6 percent of cases.
Where the victim of rape was black, in 36,620 cases, things were rather different. The "perceived race" of the offender was reported as black in 100.0 percent of cases.
White offenders? "0.0*" percent. The asterisk means that the sample included ten or fewer reports.
The federal crime statistics show that white-on-black rape was almost non-existent in the United States of America in 2005.

As soon as any “conversation” would veer into an uncomfortable truth, there would be accusations of racism and the “conversation” would immediately halt.

Here is the typical conversation about race:
Liberal: We need to have a conversation about race.
Conservative: I agree. First let’s talk about the 70% out of wedlock birth rate in the African-American community, then discuss the failure of affirmative-action.
Liberal: Racist!
I think this hit the public at large the way the interviews with blacks regarding the Rodney King riots did.
Last time it caused a whole lot of gun sales in the suburbs where most didn’t know that blacks hated their guts.
Now we have more stupidity and the result this time IMO will be to quit treating blacks like special people and to take far less of their BS racist views.
They need to get going and quit the excuses in their communities.
They can all go jump regarding reparations, trying to make me or others fell guilty or to get special treatment or short cuts in long lines.
They need to grow up, and any discussion in race will be a TWO WAY conversation. I refuse a discussion to be actually an excuse and reason to lecture me to their dogma.

You could throw in the unemployment rate, the welfare rate, the STD rate, the relative crime rate, the incarceration rate, the dropout rate...
yeah, these things are all whitey’s fault. (They might BE whitey’s fault - “liberal” whitey, that is)
Why it's their fault that a majority of black men would rather lead a life of crime and have illegitimate children rather than finish high school, get a job and raise a family.
They wonder why they're called racist when 90% percent of racial violence is directed against them by blacks.

I made an error. Blacks murdered 934 whites in 2005. 4,497 was the number of black on black murders.
