Egg McMuffin inventor dies at 89

LOS ANGELES - Herb Peterson, who invented the ubiquitous Egg McMuffin as a way to introduce breakfast to McDonald's restaurants, has died, a Southern California McDonald's official said Wednesday. He was 89.

Peterson died peacefully Tuesday at his Santa Barbara home, said Monte Fraker, vice president of operations for McDonald's restaurants in that city.

He began his career with McDonald's Corp. as vice president of the company's advertising firm, D'Arcy Advertising, in Chicago. He wrote McDonald's first national advertising slogan, "Where Quality Starts Fresh Every Day."

I've always loved that sandwich. It's the best, and probably healthiest, breakfast sandwich you can get in fast-food.

I agree that a really fresh Egg McMuffin is delicious. As for healthy, nutritionally it closely resembles the McDonalds single cheeseburger, except that the McMuffin has over six times the cholesterol:

I might just get one. I IS kind of the ultimate road food. I have been going a lot of places in my life and eaten those things in cars.

Misplaced snobbery on my part, no doubt, but I've always thought of fast-food places for lunch or dinner as trashy. But, for some reason, a fast-food breakfast, especially if grabbed from the drive-thru, is OK.

Well, better than OK, to tell the truth. A bacon egg and cheese biscuit from Bojangle's, a sausage and egg burrito from Jack-in-the-Box, whatever, is a wonderful thing. To tell the truth, it's hard to screw up eggs with bacon/ham/sausage, in whatever guise, too badly.

But the clear winner, by light years, is the Egg McMuffin. One could wish for sharper cheese, or for a better pork product than the bland slice of "Canadian bacon," whatever that is, but the concept is outstanding.

I'll bet I've scarfed down more than 100 of Herb's creations. Every single one was pretty good; none were great. Given their price, a heck of a deal.

First of all, I am no fan of McDonalds. With that said, I do like the Egg McMuffin though.

Another interesting item, I was in California several days ago and I finally stopped at a In-n-Out Burger. No bad food at all. Even though I stay away from fast food, I had to try it. It got good reviews in the movie "Super Size Me" that came out a few years ago.

I went to Young Life Camp at Lake Saranac. The first breakfast we had there, they served home made Egg McMuffins. I thought I must have died in my sleep and gone to heaven.

How can you beat something so simple? Pure Genius.

They don't serve a grilled chicken sandwich for breakfast, nor does any other fast-food restaurant.

Worries about cholesterol in eggs have been debunked in the past year. Also, there are practically no trans fats or sugars in the Egg McMuffin.

The same reason I always said breakfast was the best meal on a Navy ship. As far as Egg McMuffins, my only complaint is that the muffins are too soft. I like my english muffins toasted crunchy.

Two weeks ago, while in Las Vegas, I was in a McDonalds. Just my luck: a long line and a nut job in front of me spouting off about how Corporate America was destroying the nation. The rant continued and was at a loud volume. What to do? I turned to a complete stranger, smiled and said “This better be one helluva breakfast special.” She laughed and said “You can never go wrong with an Egg McMuffin.” :-)

A free suggestion to McD's: a burger on a toasted English muffin, sharp English cheddar, and English mustard. A BritBurger. Instant hit.

How can they say HE invented it? We were eating scrambled egg sandwiches long before we ever heard of McDonalds. He merely marketed it.

Yup. Getting a early start from a hotel in the middle of nowhere on the way to somewhere. Repacking the car and wondering where the nearest McDonald's is. LOL.

As was said the Sausage Bisquit with Egg and Cheese is better but it's also more $$$$. Last year they had a special on both types I think were 2 for $2.00. As we speak right now the MC D's here has the Egg Mc Muffin 2 fer $2.00.

May I add that I also love Egg McMuffins (and will have one tomorrow in his memory) and I want to put in a plug for McDonald's coffee. Their 'bold' brew is really good and quite a bargain compared to the burnt tasting (to me) expensive Startbucks. Blah...a filling sandwich and a large cuppa coffee for less than one vende at the trendy place.
