Henry Brown Gets a Second GOP Opponent (SC:1 Katherine Jenerette)

Henry Brown Gets a Second GOP Opponent

The circling of the wolves continues as Henry Brown gets a second GOP challenger. Desert Storm veteran and former Brown aid Katherine Jenerette of Horry County has filed to unseat her old boss. Charleston businessman Paul Norris filed for the seat last week along with Brown.

This three way race could mean good things for Democrat Linda Ketner, as Brown is forced to invest money in the primary race.

Side note: Jenerette’s website still has a picture of her and Henry together (as well as a link to Brown’s Congressional website). The site also has a few links suggesting she’s running for the state Senate, but it looks like she’s found a bigger fish.

Her press release can be found here.

Her freeper profile is here.

I hate races like this. My family knows Henry Brown and we've respected him for years, but I've also met Katherine Jenerette and think she would be a good choice for that office. Why does it always work out that in politics we usually end up with two great choices in some contests or none?

Right. I'm in the 6th district, represented by Jim Clyburn (D)

Aside from his age, why is Brown being challenged on the GOP side at all ?

I'm not in the 1st district so I don't really know anything about Brown.

This is from Katherine's press release: “I know Congressman Brown to be a dedicated and hard worker,” Jenerette said “But, Washington is a far different place today than it was with a Republican majority in both Houses and our district here in South Carolina has changed tremendously over the years.”

“Times have changed,” Jenerette continued. “And our times call for a Congressman to represent our district who has the stamina to push for the people of South Carolina and to go toe-to-toe with the Democrats in general and people like Democrat Speaker Nancy Pelosi specifically.”

She has the fight that most Republicans lack. Conservatives need a scorched earth policy to regain power.

Problem is, Brown has 8 years seniority (that’s not that long, Congressionally-speaking) and dumping that overboard in favor of someone who will be the most junior member of the minority party isn’t well advised. If Brown had a bad voting record, that would be one thing, but it’s not the case here. We need to put this kind of energy into knocking off Democrats and RINOs, not good Conservative Republicans. Our priority in SC needs to be taking out John Spratt and Lindsey Graham. Bob Inglis should probably go, too. Way too squishy.

Inglis was OK until he voted with Gilchrest and Latoilette for the surrender bill.

"Charleston City Paper"

Nice simple and humble-sounding name for a newspaper....especially if you've lived in cities where they have long glorious sounding names, and their output is still the equivalent of kitty-litter for parakeets.

Makes me wonder if Henry isn’t going to be announcing for a certain Senatorial seat...

a certain Senatorial seat...

It would be good if he would, but if that were the case I don't think Katherine would have said,"...our times call for a Congressman...who has the stamina to push for the people of South Carolina and to go toe-to-toe with the Democrats in general and people like Democrat Speaker Nancy Pelosi specifically."

Her press release also mentions meetings with GOP officials in DC and here in SC. I suspect there are more then a few people that feel Henry is "place holding" a safe GOP seat.

What do we know about "Charleston businessman Paul Norris" that filed first?

The SC-01 isn’t as GOP as the districts in Up Country. I really hope a primary battle won’t create an opening for the Dems. With the bad luck hitting conservatives these days, conservaitves just might figure out how to lose a safe GOP seat.

Brown had promised to limit himself to three terms. Also, he’s long in the tooth and should have retired. This could be more than a token challenge, as the Jenerette name is rather prominent in South Carolina.

She’s not viable...

We don't really know what's going on, there hasn't been anything in the media that I am aware of. This press release will most likely change that.

At first glance, the timing of this run seems really bad. I'm sure there were a lot of shocked people up and down the coast this morning.

Swampy,,, is your tagline a fantasy baseball team? Just curious.. Also, speaking of shocked along the coast, planners are getting ready for the hurricanes now. Since its been a few years since a hit on the Strand, this may be the year for the big one.

Link to the last folding thread.

Folding@home is a Stanford University program that allows you to "donate" unused processor time on your PC to "fold" proteins for research.

By using 100s of thousands of home PCs and "Game boxes" in a distributed network they can process much more data then a room full of super-computers.

We have a team of freeper folders. We get points for each protein folded and it's for a good cause.

I’m going to vote for her in the primary: I’ve never been a fan of the Berkeley Browns. That being said, the situation is a mess - and it will be made prominent in a political race. The press stuck it to her the last time she ran for something, iirc, and this would be the salacious type of sewage they feed on.

I’ve known Katherine for a while now and firmly believe that she has “the right stuff” to make a change whether it is in DC or here at home in SC. I’ll vote for her - that’s a given. There will be a lot of people in DC who will under estimate her. But then most people under estimate southern women, don’t they?

Ok.
Her press release drips with disdain for 72 year old Geezers like Henry Brown running for office. I wonder if she feels the same about 72 year old John McCain? Also, Their financial problems are very public. Shouldn't they be using their money for her husband's criminal defense rather than a race she can't win?

I believe a Don’t ask, Don’t tell policy is in effect.

IMO she just might have the “right stuff” unfortunately she’s also got some wrong stuff, her husband needs to be retired, as in divorced! I bet she could win without that albatross around her neck. She’d have my vote.

You may be right but she has four young children and a husband (for now) who can’t have unsupervised contact with them. I hope she has friends and family helping out while she chases her dreams.

I just can’t believe this year is the right time to run for office.

Agreed. Then again, who knows how long the criminal stuff will drag on in the courts(I haven’t read a thing about it since the initial arrest), so can’t blame her for trying to move forward.

Didn’t know about the money problems, that might be the biggest hindrance at the end of the day.

Van Jenerette’s case goes before a Grand Jury Thursday.
If this wasn't so horrifying I'd say pass the popcorn.

I’ve never really understood what a Grand Jury’s indictment means.
I did a wikapedia search and bascially they are confirming there is enough evidence to go to trial.

I wonder how or if this will effect her campaign?

I suspect they will claim these charges are the work of their political “enemies”.
The next two months until the primary will be a circus.
