Rice hits U.S. 'birth defect'
Washington Times ^ | 3/28/08 | Nicholas Kralev

Posted on 03/28/2008 1:33:36 AM PDT by MartinaMisc

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said yesterday that the United States still has trouble dealing with race because of a national "birth defect" that denied black Americans the opportunities given to whites at the country's very founding.

"Black Americans were a founding population," she said. "Africans and Europeans came here and founded this country together — Europeans by choice and Africans in chains. That's not a very pretty reality of our founding."

As a result, Miss Rice told editors and reporters at The Washington Times, "descendants of slaves did not get much of a head start, and I think you continue to see some of the effects of that."

"That particular birth defect makes it hard for us to confront it, hard for us to talk about it, and hard for us to realize that it has continuing relevance for who we are today," she said.

Race has become an issue in this year's presidential campaign, which prompted a much-discussed speech last week by Sen. Barack Obama, one of the two remaining contenders for the Democratic nomination.

Miss Rice declined to comment on the campaign, saying only that it was "important" that Mr. Obama "gave it for a whole host of reasons."

But she spoke forcefully on the subject, citing personal and family experience to illustrate "a paradox and contradiction in this country," which "we still haven't resolved."

What amazes me is how many FReepers want her to be VP or president because she’s black and she’s a woman.

Ms. Rice.....your forefathers were betrayed by their brothers....and sold into slavery. The white man brought them here to help settle this country..... and God blessed you in that white men helped set them free......so you could be blessed even more......by being born to live in the greatest nation on earth....with freedom and prosperity.

“Europeans by choice and Africans in chains”

Uh, not quite, unless you mean the Europeans who came here seeking religious freedom could have given up and followed the state religion back home.

Eggxactly, Moonman!

She’s got bad teeth, no boobs and loves the Palestinians and other enemies of Israel and the U.S.! How could ANY patriot want Sleeza for VP?

How about a truly GREAT, non-RINOed black female American named Prof. Carol Swain of Vanderbilt? This lady is TOUGH, believes in law and order and a sealed Border and is very well-spoken, so much so that Lou Dobbs has her on his show now regularly?

Condi WHO?

Children and women are taken into slavery today,
and Dr. Rice gives US money to the slavers.

Stockholm syndrome? or just a stupid use of
American taxpayer money for Dr. Rice’s fawning
before slavers, murderers, and terrorists.

I didn't realize Rice was hoping to run with Obama, yet that's how bad these comments are.  This is a sad commentary.  I used to respect this woman.  Just dang...

Folks, we all realize that slavery was wrong and that it would have been far better if the early settlers of this nation had not instituted it here.  The reality is that they did.  I am not proud of the fact, but at some point in time we must move on.  We fought a civil war that in part was to end slavery.  Many whites died to purchase freedom for blacks.  During that time frame there were countless poor whites in this nation also.  People were self-sufficient in those days, and Condi, you should know better than to make it seem that blacks were the only folks who didn't have a real break in the U.S.  Many people were dirt poor in this nation clear up into the early to mid 20th century, a full one hundred years after the civil war.

We have spent literally trillions of dollars mainly to help the poor, many of which were black.  While there still is some prejudice in this nation, most whites try to be fair to blacks.  How long are you going to play this wounded bird routine?  Oh excuse me, now it's "national birth defect", the latest in a seemingly endless number of catch phrases to cause contemporary whites to put back on the robes of guilt.

What the hell do you want lady?  We are six to seven generations past the civil war.  We are one to two generations past the 1960s.  We have waged war, declared the emancipation proclamation, have spent three to four trillions dollars on welfare since 1965, have instituted any number of civil rights and affirmative action programs.

What do you want now?  Seriously.  Just get the list together, let us know your demands and while you're at it just tell us what we get if we don't meet them.  You talk of a 'national birth defect' and for the life of my I can only see 'a nation held hostage' to a group of people who seemingly will never take responsibility for their own destiny.  Tell me where I've got that wrong.

You say that it was important that Obama gave that racist speech.  Honestly, you are one woman who is off her rocker.

I can't tell you how poorly you have handled China.  It's a nation that has made no bones about it willingness to abuse it's citizens.  The policies of your boss has rewarded that government despite this.  And now you are worried someone might call for a boycott of the olympics in the 2008 version of the 1934 olympics.  Get your Sieg Heil ready Condi.  By all means, don't upset anyone in China.  I just have to laugh at your comments about offending the Chinese people.  I'm sure developing close relations with a government that ran down about 6,000 of those citizens with tanks and shooting the ones they missed with automatic weapons, probably didn't offend them either.

You are one dilusional broad.  That is butressed by your comment that sanctions on Iraq to keep it in line was a poor policy.  Let's see, no war, no sanctions...  what does that leave us?  Oh yes, increased trade and massive trade deficits.  I should have known.  Well, we can't get it right every time kiddo.  You're actually holding public office, so I guess that should be obvious.

Just think, we could have had the olympics in Baghdad if only we would have played our cards right.

Who wrote this tripe for you?  John McCain?

Ms Rice, you're a typical RINO. Yes your people came here as Negro slaves, were freed by the courage of one true Republican but then again enslaved to a new Master - the Federal government which drugged your people back into submission with handouts that sent a message that “You’re incapable of making life better for yourself; you need government in order to survive.” So Ms Rice, direct your comments to the Democrat party and its co-leader Barak Hussein Obama and his socialism and what it means for your people. Oh, one last question, can you tell us why the Asian Americans and Latino Americans in the same span of time that the “Great Society” has been in place, have managed to integrate themselves into societal entrepreneurship so effectively - why is having dark skin more of a handicap than having slanted eyes or being unable to speak the language?

Well, Condi, guess what. Some of us WHITE folks were poor and did not get a head start either. But we took a good look at the opportunities that America offered and went for it. Why don’t blacks do just that? You certainly did..now explain the others! Fussing about how the black race got here is rediculous; do you think that you would be better off if you lived in South Africa? Whites have their share of folks who feel victimized as well....no $$, etc. but I do not recall any of them raising the race card. Personally, I have had enough of this race stuff and I think most people have after putting up with face time with Obamamama and his no sense mantra and his angry wife.

Dr. Rice is now under attack from traitors and freepers. Sad. Who here is defending slavery? Being brought to this country as slaves because of your skin color is the same as whites voluntarily becoming indentured servants how?

Empathy and concern for others is a Christian trait that I gladly share with that fine Christian woman.

If she is so proud to be black and wants to be a role model, what's with the straightening of the hair? Same goes for Michelle Obama.

It actually is a form of self-hatred and denial. Natural hair can be beautiful.

Some of the most racist people are blacks in the manner in which they treat each other. Black men often won't date dark-skinned black women.

No doubt... I wonder if Rice spoke of these things and the reporters at the Times ignored those parts of the interview, or if she even bothered to address those issues at all... I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt as a fellow conservative, but I’d like to hear her say SOMETHING about this — perhaps a personal press release, a speech, or something where we can hear everything she has to say and not just what the MSM chooses to print???

What scares me about all of this is I’m beginning to wonder if the Dems did this (pushed Obama forward) on purpose in an attempt to keep the Black Community under their thumbs and set back the progress they have achieved over the last 40 years? And, no doubt, the MSM loves anything that bleeds — even if it’s our own citizens, so I’m sure they’d love nothing better than to drive a further wedge between people just HOPING for something juicy to sell papers with - like a riot...

A lot of Irish came here in the holds of prison ships.

They were not fed, medicated or otherwise tended to because they had utterly no “market value”.
They were merely exiles forcibly ejected from their homeland for the financial/territorial gain of the ejecters.

In a remarkably short time, they rose above *their* “birth defect” and became a hugely successful segment of the population.

[In the late 1800s, a black would be hired *before* any Irish was because they were despised even more.]

They didn’t sob into their aprons about it for centuries on end....they sucked it up and did something.

My dad’s ancestors came here in the late 1600s.
You’ll never hear us whining for “reparations” for our long-dead ancestors’ sufferings.

We’re just grateful that because of them, we were born *here*.

Ok, time to put this "They sold their own people" myth to rest. The African slaves that were bought during the slave trade were members of other African nations, not people that belonged to the same tribe as the African slavebrokers.

Hypothetically, it would be like if the British and the French were in a war, the British won, and sold the French captives into slavery to the Chinese. And if that happened in the modern day world, there would be calls to jail the PM of the UK and the PM of China. Nobody would say "The white people sold their own people into slavery". Thank you.

You mean other African tribes. In tribal wars the victor would have some new black slaves. This went on for centuries. When the Europeans came the tribes on Africa's west coast sold these slaves to Europeans. Today's Mozambique was active in this trade

Slaves were often bought with booze. Rum.

We need a Republican ticket with a black conservative on it. Preferably, by far, one who goes to an integrated church. Best of all would be Thomas Sowell, were he not 78 years old.

There are none such who, if white, would be considered to have an adequate resume for election as president - but the Constitution makes a point of incentivizing the selection of a VP nominee whose identity will help unify the country. That's what it means when it says,

The Electors shall meet in their respective States and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same State with themselves.
A black conservative Republican VP nominee would force the Democrats to nominate Obama, and would, by the simple power of the example of a black who isn't a racist, assure Obama's defeat because Obama is a racist. All black Democratic pols are racists - which is why they poll so much worse in a secret ballot than they do in a caucus or in a telephone survey. Or if there are some black pols who aren't racist, they are a minority within a minority within a minority. Because it unfortunately takes such an exceptional black to be a leader against black racism - and because the few that exist naturally tend to be Republicans.

The “tribes” had their own languages, borders, and culture, which makes them “nations”, not tribes. But funny you mention rum and slavery. My ancestors were rum and slave runners in the Caribbean. The rum and slave runners tended to marry their slaves. Under Spanish law, you had to marry your slaves if you wanted to have sex with them, or else the church told you that you’d go to hell. That’s how I came into existence, ironically enough.

I don’t see anywhere that she says anything about her personally suffering the impacts of slavery or anything else. “See some of the impacts” is pretty mild — I’d be hard pressed to say that there has been ZERO impact on blacks of being (largely, not totally) the descendents of slaves. That doesn’t mean that they should be excused all, or even any failures, moral or otherwise, but looking at overall statistics, you have to recognize SOME impact.

You nailed it. The issue EVERYONE forgets is that the reason people went to Africa for slaves is because THAT IS WHERE THE SLAVE SUPERMARKET WAS!

They didnt wander over there and say “oh lets kidnap these people” - They went to the place where you could buy slaves.

This was 200 years ago, and sounds repulsive, now, but back then it was thousands of years of ‘normal’ history.

We in the USA should not be condemned for previous slavery, we should be THANKED for GETTING RID OF IT
