Myth of the new cold war
Prospect Magazine, Political and Cultural Essays and Arguments ^ | March 2008 | Stephen Kotkin

Posted on 03/28/2008 3:41:22 AM PDT by vertolet

What is it about Russia that drives the Anglo-American world mad? Soviet communism collapses, the empire is relinquished. Then come the wild hopes and failures of the 1990s—including the 1993 half-coup and the tank assault on Russia's legislature, the results-adjusted referendum on a new constitution (still in force), the dubious privatisations, the war in Chechnya and the financial default in 1998. But after all that, in December 1999 Boris Yeltsin apologises, steps down early—and names his prime minister and former secret police chief Vladimir Putin as acting president. To widespread consternation, Yeltsin predicts that the obscure spy is the man to "unite around himself those who will revive Great Russia." Incredibly, this is exactly what transpires.

And this is a grand disappointment, even a frightening prospect? The elevation of Putin...

>>What is it about Russia that drives the Anglo-American world mad?

Maybe it’s the large nuclear arsenal and aggressive “patrolling” with Bears over our CV battle groups and such. Not to mention the increasingly authoritarian government.

“Mad” to be concerned with developments there? Hardly.

Maybe the thirty years they threatened to incinerate us.

Russian foreign policy is incredibly simple-minded. They simply take whichever tack will increase the price of crude oil and natural gas. For instance, if opposing Iranian acquisition of nuclear weapons will lower tension in the Middle East and lower the price of oil, then they are against it. If supporting Iranian acquisition of nuclear weapons will increase Middle East tensions and raise the price of oil, they are for it. You can apply that to ANY foreign policy decision they make. It's not the Russian Federation as much as it is the Gasprom Federation.

Maybe it’s that they are double-dealing xenophobic heavy-handed thugs and have been since the 1400’s. Oh, and those are their good points.

Russians I’ve talked to are actually happy that the rest of the world hates them. It’s almost national pride issue with them.

Exactly. Russia has created a dangerous little pet in Iran. When Iran goes nuclear and attacks Israel, Russia must be held to account. Very interesting the U.K. is so admiring of Russia these days. The book of Revelations and the beast comes to mind...

Just is case this was lost on you, Russian patrols were _reestablished_ after a long time. US had never ceased same activity. Russian nuclear arsenal is still several times smaller than the one US maintains AND is not located right near US borders.

Signed up just to post that, did you?

I was unaware that ND and Montana and such were right near the Russian border.

Actually, they just gave up as they simply can do no right in US eyes short of simply dying out. The short history had gave them very convincing lesson that being friends with USA is the closest equivalent inviting enemies and robbers right into their houses. They just prefer to keep people who mean no good for their country where enemies belong - outside of Russia’s borders, not within.

Russian men seem to be doing that just fine on their own at the bottom of a vodka bottle, no help from the U.S. required.

If you’re really Russian, and not a DUer, you need to wake the f*** up and realize it’s your own culture, and the encroachment of the nearby Muzzies, that you need to be worried about. The crap your own leaders are feeding you about the “US THREAT!” is a bunch of lies to keep them in power and you under their thumb.

Will USA be held accountable if their own pet Pakistan will bite its neighbors some day? Kettle and black come to mind somehow. Besides, Russia did not sell any of assault weaponry to Iran and surely pitiful small defense systems can pose no threat to anyone except those known for bombing defenseless countries. Russia IS participating into international effort trying to control Iran’s nuclear ambitions, it just refuses to be a part of absurd theater USA is playing trying to prepare for yet another ‘victorious’ invasion into sovereign country.

I happen to work in US and is quite familiar with what _your_ government is feeding you and you seem to be a fine specimen of what they are trying to breed. You forgot to mention bears roaming streets of our cities to complete the picture. We also play balalaika’s to our pet bears when we _really_ get drunk, you know...

Our own culture is doing fine, thank you very much. Nearby ‘Muzzies’ as you cutely name them are not something new, they lived in and near Russia for hundreds years, hell, 30% of Russian population are Muslims and their history is Russia’s history. Last thing we need is teachers like US telling us how to build relationship with our neighbors, especially given your recent track record on this noble path. Maybe it is you who should wake up and realize what xenophobic crap is being fed to you every day in order to substantiate America’s god given right to be whenever it wants to be and bomb whoever it want to bomb.

I dare you to demonstrate your knowledge of this subject, as you sure know more than me on the crap our leaders are feeing me. There is little or no need for government to bother with such a propaganda, US actions in the world are public and self-explaining. Russians today have access to TV, Internet and press from all other the world and they do take advantage of that and they can compare their government propaganda with the viewpoints coming from outside. This more than one can say about most of the Americans watching Fox :)

Curious fact - the most anti-american web site in Russian I know of is ‘inosmi.ru’. All it does it translates articles about Russia coming from US press _word for word_. Nothing else. You do the rest.

It was paid full in blood and lives, you arrogant ass. 85 out of 100 soldiers 3rd Reich lost in WWII did find their graves in Russian fields instead of pushing your sorry asses back into ocean at Normandy beaches when US finally decided to join the fight for real.
P.S. I wish you mastered the right of posting working links, so I wouldn’t have to guess what I am responding to.

How many nuclear plants has the U.S. assisted Pakistan with? Spending tens of billions to secure a nuclear arsenal from becoming black market in Pakistan is a far cry in Russia assisting Iran with nuclear fuel rod processing. Russia refusing to accept the rods because of “lack of payment” from Iran is telling. It tells us Russia is more then happy to have it’s little pet Iran, threaten other nations with annihalation. Did Pakistan government threaten other nations with annihalation? Your little pet is going to get millions of people killed and believe me, they aren’t all going to be Arabs, they will be Russian’s feeling the heat of nuclear blast. Russia is a willing instrument of destruction and will not avoid culpubility in this matter.
