KAWARTHA LAKES - Participation in Earth Hour by students and staff at local schools is spectacular, say trustees and board administrators.
We have 100 per cent buy-in to this initiative, said Trustee Chairperson Rick Johnson. This says something about the sense of responsibility to the environment shared by our students and teachers.
Trustees launched the initiative for schools to power down today to mark Saturdays global Earth Hour after students at Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational School lobbied the Board for support. As well, students at Parkview Public School took signed petitions urging participation to local politicians.
This is so clearly important to our students. We teach responsibility as a character trait in our schools, so it is truly noteworthy when we see students putting it into practice, Johnson said.
At 8 p.m. March 29, the world will turn off its lights for one hour Earth Hour to show support for taking action on climate change. It started last year when 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses in Sydney Australia turned off their lights for an hour. It reduced the energy consumption by more than ten per cent equivalent to taking 48,000 cars off the road for a year!
Because Earth Hour falls on a Saturday, the Trillium Lakelands District School Board encouraged principals to set aside an hour on Friday to mark the event. Many incorporated lesson plans into the hour. Some added school assemblies to mark the occasion. Many chose to head outdoors to take part in daily physical activity.
This symbolic act carries a message that touches on every one of the character-building traits promoted in schools, from citizenship and respect, to self control and responsibility, Johnson said.
Staff at TLDSB corporate offices also took part in powering down equipment and lights Friday.
If you havent already, make sure you register to take part in the event. www.earthhour.org.
Kind of like elections in the USSR.
May the good Lord save us from insipid liberals.
I will turn on every light in the house, and flip on my pinball games too.
Eff ‘em.
Looks like sheeple are doing as ordered by their eco-masters
“To bridge the gap between the students
visualization of an ideal future and what
needs to be done to create this vision,
it is necessary to take action. Students
need to know that being passive will not
bring about the future that that they desire.
Ask the students what actions can be
done to ameliorate the problem, and try
to encourage realistic responses while
emphasizing a proactive approach.”
Possible answers could include:
“...joining a national or local youth group that
is doing something about climate change”
What a bunch of crap.
The most likely source of electricity for the Kawartha lakes area. http://www.opg.com/power/nuclear/darlington/
Pretty scurvy to enlist children in the political process. One of the reasons “liberals” are so widely despised.
Further, the gist of the entire operation seems to revolve around the singular achievement of cutting the mains power. This is twisted into some kind of celebration? WTF? And, you just know this, viscerally, a coal plant, a nuclear power plant, are verboten anywhere in the curriculum, except to be disparaged. And best of all - on the taxpayer dime.
"Buy-in" has always been one of my least favorite jargon phrases, usually desired by management when they are selling a 100% load of crap.

There was probably a big battle; was Johnson to be called ‘Trusetee Chairperson” or simply “Trustee Chair’
Say - I think you’re onto something - NK shows good progress in minimizing their carbon footprint. And, tree-bark, though not very nutritious, is renewable and local.
Damn, now I have to spend all day putting my Christmas lights back up, just for one hour’s enjoyment.
Yeah, to imagine the ultimate “Green” dream, imagine a world full of North Koreas. Reminds me of the old saying, “ be careful what you wish for, you might get it”.
