Earth Day. Live Earth. And, now, Earth Hour.
The latest bright idea from the country that gave us "Crocodile Dundee" is to have everyone across the globe turn off their lights for an hour at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Apparently, a bunch of neo-Luddites in Sydney did this last year and it made them feel good about themselves, so they've decided to give the rest of the world a chance to achieve a similar sense of self-worth.
Because, if we are being honest, Earth Hour, like its forefathers, is not about environmental policy--it is about social networking and self-importance.

Oh no! Come on, don’t tell the liberals! Oh, ghads, now they’ll know...
I prefer to think of it as the country that brought us Yahoo Serious.
Anyway, I think a great deal of good could be accomplished if each of the 6 billion people on Earth spent just one hour building nuclear power plants.
i think a dingo ate your Earth hour.
Lights are all on full blast right now in honor of Earth hour.
My only regret was not puting up the Chtistmas lights to drive the point home.
For that hour we are going to turn on every light in our home and do a load of laundry. Also one of us will watch TV while the other one surfs the web.
The lights probably won’t turn back on. There will be a reverse surge.
Google has a black home page with the explanation, “We’ve turned the lights out. Now it’s your turn - Earth Hour.” ( “Earth Hour” is clickable. )
It’s getting scary, people!
Black home page, that is white when you go anywhere on site.
As I said earlier, I would have more respect for google, if they shutdown servers and all power to their bldgs for 1 hour.
Australia is also the land that discovered the connection between Thalidomide and birth defects. A lot of smart, innovative people there, despite some economic wackiness and socialism.
I think this Earth Hour symbolism is benign and see nothing wrong with turning out a light when you don’t need it to be on. It saves money and I do it myself.
Besides, the Aussies have been excellent allies and I have a lot of respect for them. And “Crocodile Dundee” notwithstanding, with a small population Australia has produced a large number of excellent films. So using that film as a benchmark is about as relevant as judging the USA by “Ishtar.”

It is 100% feel good - and a way to promote The Cause. They will look around at 8:05 PM and point to every light that is not on and claim it shows support for The Cause.
It should be a good hour for thieves.
They will look around at 8:05 PM and point to every light that is not on and claim it shows support for The Cause.
My lights are rarely on at 8pm. As i work 3rd shift, they would be sorely mistaken if they pointed at me as supporting this idiocy.
At other times, i only have lights on that I need.
That is I turn lights off if I leave room.
I do this to save money, if it saves energy I consider that an unintended consequence.

North Koreans are tired of being Environmentally Pure and would like to eat something other than tree bark, please.

Watch my lamp and you won't have to buy in to climate change
If these nut jobs were so serious about saving the planet they would yank out their circuit boards and go off the grid! Anybody know a good candle maker?
Me too. Lights will be on in every room for that hour. The house will certainly appear as a beacon in my own neighborhood of Nanny-Stater lemmings.
I think that might be a good idea in case of a pending attack by space aliens. Turn out the lights and they won't be able to find us in the dark, they'll just zip right on by our planet......
As for preventing global warming, I don't think it'll work so I'm keeping my lights on. Besides, when I shower in the dark I usually miss body parts.........
Hey! You can’t do that either, carbon foot print and all, besides trees have feelings too! And OMG! They’re wearing fur! Nooooooo!
Unless power generation is stopped for that hour, Earth Hour will cause a tremendous waste of energy. Electricity doesn’t store - what isn’t consumed will simply evaporate, unsold. All the CO2 emitted worldwide creating electricity will still occur without a single benefit even being realized.
This is just another PR gimmick like the ‘lights out/green’ NBC did a few months ago.
Same here. I generally have a lot of lights on when I wake in the morning, but in the evening I only use what I need. I’ve cut my electric bill considerably.
I’m thinking of turning everything on tonight.
