Tonight's Earth Hour event shows that Australia is a leading party in the fight against climate change, the Environment Minister says.
More than twenty cities around the world will today switch off their lights in recognition of climate change, and a pledge to reduce consumption.
The worldwide event is only 12-months old, however thousands of buildings, homes and businesses will tonight switch off the lights for one hour.
Businesses and Government have also backed the initiative, originally bolstered by residential homes around the country - with over 2000 Government buildings to switch off their lights.
Environment Minister Peter Garrett said today that the event showed Australia's climate leadership.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for us to show leadership and to recognise that in the face of climate change, there are some simple, positive, very easy to do [things]; turning off our lights when we don't need them," Mr Garrett said.
Earth Hour organisers say that the initiative is more than symbolic, adding that if everyone began to switch off more regularly, emissions would be cut significantly.
"Even one hour, that's so tiny, on their own they make absolutely no difference because it's so tiny, but when you add it all up together and imagine we were able to do that a lot more hours of the day - throughout the whole year, that's when we start breaking into really serious emission cuts," Earth Hour's Andy Ridley said.
Residents os Australian cities are tonight encouraged to switch off their lights between 8PM and 9PM local.
Think how much energy could be saved if ten thousand government employees were fired... Hey! Smaller government - it’s GREEN!
That’s six minutes after they get their pink slips and they’re back at work.
I hear Mr. Garrett suggests burning our beds for energy. :)
I hate to call these good people morons, but...
Perhaps they are "Sun worshipers" because that is the only way to effect climate change. Our Sun is the cause of global warming and cooling. Of course I have nothing against responsible environmentalism. It is a good thing to conserve resources.
Now you are talking, consider the reduction in noise pollution and the pollution of bad ideas, like the one in the article. Since when is a light an emitter of anything, other than light.
Adapt or die.
Of course up here in the Dhimmi, Socialist Peoples Republic of Vermont (to make my point, Burlington, Vermont is one of only THREE cities in the country to carry Al Jazeera English Broadcast) it has not been easy to recruit like-minded people who consider the entire GloBull issue a major hoax.
However, with the offer of free steaks and adult beverages, I was able to find a few who in turn, have taken the pledge to use as much carbon as possible in return for coming to my party.
Dinner (even though we have snow on the ground and the temp will be hovering close to freezing) will be grain-fed beef cooked over a charcoal fire (none of that clean LPG barbecue gas), served with vegetables shipped in from as far away as possible.
Heres another suggestion I picked up off the net and will include as many as I can during this time frame:
Possible items you may want to switch ON:
-all household lights
-air conditioner
-heater
-washer
-dryer
-dishwasher
-stove/oven
-put on ovens self-cleaning cycle
-microwave
-any/all kitchen appliances -television
-dvd player
-game system
-stereo
-wood/gas burning stove/fireplace
-space heaters
-outdoor lights
And dont forget computers, which you may use to track the Earth Hour hoc-us pocus.

As an aside, while some in the media are claiming MILLIONS will participate, the official web site lists ONLY 284773 people as having signed up for Earth Hour 2008.
The following cities have also pledged to participate in this charade:
Aalborg » Aarhus » Adelaide » Atlanta » Bangkok » Bogota » Brisbane » Canberra » Chicago » Christchurch » Copenhagen » Darwin » Dublin » Hobart » Manila » Melbourne » Montreal » Odense » Ottawa » Perth » Phoenix » San Francisco » Santa Cruz » Suva and Lautoka » Sydney » Tel Aviv » Toronto » Vancouver
I wish I could find a bulb like this which sold on Ebay, it would make things so much easier to. Its a 240v 5000 W Bulb which apparently is/was made by Phllips in Holland, but have not been able to find another.

As Rush usually remarks, this is nothing more than typical, Far-Left, Moonbat, Symbolism over Substance.
And yes while this may all seem foolish (my wanting to spend extra $$$ in consuming unneeded energy, I'm following the liberal mindset in that it will "make me feel good;" and pointing out the absurdity by being absurd.
Yikes! Who are the other cities?
hey, good for you! i just went to Google something and saw their black screen and the message “we have turned our lights off, now it’s your turn...EARTH HOUR”. well i am turning every light in my house on and will leave them on all day today! i cannot help it, crap like this makes me want to make a huge statement in opposition to the lib claptrap. i applaud your party!
Yikes! Who are the other cities?
The other 2 cities are: Toledo and Sandusky, Ohio.
This was news to me even though I live here. I just now learned this from reading this story:
"Dave Marash quits Al-Jazeera English
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080327/ap_en_tv/tv_exiting_american
If the guvmint were serious about the evironment they wouldn’t have a minstrel looking after it.
You guys laugh now, but after the next election, McCain or whichever POTUS, will be saying the same thing. Oh, and higher taxes to "save the world" It truly is TEOTWAWKI!

The Army’s Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth carries Al Jazeera English too, but I think it’s more so the staff and students get a better appreciation of the other side’s propaganda.
That’s a good list of suggestions, but I wonder if riding around for an hour in a 10-year-old V8 Ford might use up a little more carbon. I might have to go cruising this evening.
I just noticed that Google switched their screens to black.
Liberals are just so stoopid!
We didn’t even know about this. Last night was just another night.
I just returned from southwestern Guangdong Province in China. If the GW cultists want to see climate change, I suggest they go there. This winter has damaged vast areas of coconut, date and other fruit trees. I saw hundreds of star fruit trees with the fruit rotting on the branches because of the cold. The coconut branches are turning brown and dropping coconuts that were small as my fist. Way to small. Many of the cactus-like plants are dead. They are starting to get very worried over the damage to their food supply.
This is only the beginning of the damage. As summer progresses, the real damage will be seen.
“We didnt even know about this. Last night was just another night.”
Then you didn’t miss anything.
I guess the secular lunatics are trying to transform March/April into their high holy month with Arbor Day, Earth Day and the like. I saw a Campbells soup can in the store today which had been printed in green to commememorate Earth Day. They probably wasted a pile of energy switching the presses over to the new color.
What a bunch of dupes! I can’t believe the way the corporations in this country let themselves be shaken down by the lunny left.
You must be watching those right wing nutters who are determined to destroy our planet

Does that include April Fool’s Day?
After reading further I learned that Saturday night was Earth Hour or World Hour or somesuch in the US. So, at 8pm, we turned on our yard lights for an hour.
Did we get it wrong? ;)
