Today, Google has decided to celebrate "Earth Hour" in this way on their main page:

Here is some text to explain their actions:
Google users in the United States will notice today that we "turned the lights out" on the Google.com homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display. However, you can do something to reduce the energy consumption of your home PC by joining the Climate Savers Computing Initiative.
On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone. On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation.
Given our company's commitment to environmental awareness and energy efficiency, we strongly support the Earth Hour campaign, and have darkened our homepage today to help spread awareness of what we hope will be a highly successful global event.
Why did Google choose this specific organization? We believe in doing our part to help combat climate change, and found the Earth Hour initiative to be a timely, important event. Further, we think the "lights out" idea's individual-centered nature is something that millions of people worldwide can participate in.
In short, we really like it. So we did something about it.
How can I get Google to do something similar for my organization or project?
We welcome your ideas on how we can become more socially and environmentally responsible. Although we can't guarantee either a placement on the Google homepage or even a response to every query, we do read every email we receive and welcome your ideas of organizations that you believe we should feature. If you'd like to submit a proposal, please send it to us at proposals@google.com.

Stupid liberal tree huggers...
sheeesh
Got it.
8:00 pm I turn on all the lights.
I’m going to turn some lights on before the hour is up.
Already does this.
I love it when the rules have to be broken by the ‘sympathizers’ haha
In true corporate decision - Google went on the money road.
The epitome of ‘the empty gesture’!!!!
Kids these days!

I intend to turn on every light in the house and shine out there for all TO SEE!! This stupid Observing Earth Hour” is all part of the Global Warming hoax which is designed to in part bring down capitolism that is the bread and butter of our country. Think about it folks....who will be getting rich off of all this??
Anti Earth Hour Petition........by the way, I didn’t start this petition.

Guess I’ll fire up the arc welder from 8 to 9.It draws about 50 amps at 220 volts, much more effective than turning some lights on.
Unfortunately, on LCD monitors sized 22 inches or less, Googles new black actually consumes more energy than its usual white one.Gotta love it!
I turn lights out to save money... nothing to do with Man Made Global Warming hysteria.
And they have been doing it for years!
Feel good symbolism over substance.
Damn, where’s a stack of old tires to burn when you need it? It would make a nice tribute.
Oh well, I’ll just turn on my lights and crank the space heater up to the max.
This stunt unwittingly offers the perfect metaphor for where these loons want to take us: back into the dark ages!
My place gets lit up like a Christmas tree at 8:00 tonight. The dishwasher and washing machine will be on. I’ll leave the fridge and freezer cracked open. The meter wheel might just whirl out of its glass case and hit the ground like a spinning top. Yee haww!
Despite their idiotic reason for the black page, I like it so much better. It’s much more pleasant on the eyes.
Hey, I’ll bump this thread to raise awareness. I’ve done my bit. The rest of you energy wasters better pony up.
I’m surprised it wasn’t held on Earth Day — when is that, April 22? (Lenin’s Birthday).
LOL. If the Googheads really wanted to conserve energy they’d shut down all their massive server farms. But Noooooooo!
Stupid liberal tree huggers commie bed wetting pinko f stickes
Im gonna zip tie my skill saw in the on positon anf just let it whirl for the hour
“Da*n Hippies! (Silver Streak 1976)
I changed most of my lightbulbs, turned down the furnace and my NYSEG bill still went up! Now I squint when I’m cold as I pay through the nose for power.
We observe “earth” hopurs every night. Our lights are out all night long...
Webmasters who use ( bgcolor=”#000000” ) need to be clubbed to death like baby seals!
My law firm here is doing the same. I have to make sure all of the lights are out before I leave the office today. I have better things to do.
I used to buy into all this stuff. Used to. And I felt really smug about what a good little do-gooder I was. Now I laugh.
I’m curious what is the joy in consumption just for consumption’s sake? I have no problem with using things as they are needed, but using something just so you aren’t saving it seems crazy. Even without the global warming boogeyman I have no problem with conservation. It would seem to me to be wise to be stewards of the planet.
I’m gonna turn every single thing I own on for an hour today. Everything. Lawnmower, weadeater, and power tools included. Just let em sit there warming my small section of the globe.
Do gotta figure out something that takes an hour to cook in the microwave though.
As luck would have it, I'm going to a party tonight. The lights will be on and the music will be blaring! Screw the damn treehuggers. What in the world do they think turning the lights off will accomplish? Stupid jerks.
Oh, my eyes! Yuck!
Any questions? :-)
The same people that are going to get rich no matter what you do.
do not forget to blast the stereo while you are at it
I wondered about that.
I’m sure Google will power off its’ servers and turn off all its’ lights, too. /s
I think you are missing the the whole point though. Don't you see that both ends of this discussion are too extreme??? THAT is the laugh.
I guess I HAVE to type /sarc EVERY TIME IT'S NOT BLATANTLY OBVIOUS (course, I thought it was) THAT I'M EXAGERATING (to make a point)!
Hey Google...JUST be good stewards of the land, and stop all this finger pointing....OR I'LL START EXAGERATING AGAIN. ;-)
actually, just letting it spin doesn’t use that much power. For fun sometime, watch the meter when someone is using a saw. You should see the meter spin fast right when the saw starts, then the meter slows dows. When it starts cutting, you should see the meter spinning faster.
GOOD ONE! ;-)
