He did right by my brother when his patrol car was run over by an 18-wheeler, even though they aren’t on the same force. Joe went way out of his way to get the evidence needed to hold the driver’s company responsible for some serious fraud. He personally took care of the investigation.

I am not local, but have been reading about Arpaio for years. Here is Wikipedia's balanced account of Joe Arpaio that includes a vast array of things he has done that are good, as well as the bad and the ugly.
I have no idea how Sheriff Arpaio has evolved; I can tell you Phoenix was out of control when he was first elected. Crime, especially in the “good” neighborhoods was very high and there was a rampage of car jackings and other dangerous crime at the shopping malls especially. People were afraid to go shopping and he was elected on his campaign promise to crack down and make it safe to go shopping again. He delivered on that promise by doing many things that were unusual, like deputizing retired LEOs and using horse patrols- as well as establishing his famous tent jail system when critics said the jails were too overcrowded to hold all the criminals that were arrested as a result of his crackdowns. I moved out of Maricopa County when he had only been in office a couple of years so I don’t have long-term knowledge of his actions through the years but he was sure respected when I left. I notice he keeps getting re-elected so he can’t be all bad.
Does the man have an ego? Yes, a great big one- is he entirely orthodox in his methods? No but his ideas work out more often than not. He has been blamed for many things, but the truth is he delivers.
I work with an extreme liberal who has family in Maricopa county. She reports that they like the results Sheriff Joe has obtained, but think he is “cruel on immigration” meaning enforcing anti-illegal alien laws.
Uhm, am I not getting this? The rally will be held April 5th 2008?

Btw; I am a local and Sheriff Joe gets a lot of flack from the Dems and illegals.....they pretty much hate the guy.
