U.N.'s Ban condemns Dutch film as anti-Islamic
(Reuters ^ | Fri Mar 28, 2008 2:32pm EDT | Lewis Krauskopf; editing by Mohammad Zargham

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday condemned as "offensively anti-Islamic" a Dutch lawmaker's film that accuses the Koran of inciting violence.

Ban acknowledged efforts by the government of the Netherlands to stop the broadcast of the film, which was launched by Islam critic Geert Wilders over the Internet, and appealed for calm to those "understandably offended by it."

"There is no justification for hate speech or incitement to violence," Ban said in a statement. "The right of free expression is not at stake here."

The short film, titled "Fitna," an Arabic term sometimes translated as "strife," intersperses images of the September 11 attacks on the United States and Islamist bombings with quotations from the Koran.

The film urges Muslims to tear out "hate-filled" verses from the Koran and starts and finishes with a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad with a bomb under his turban, accompanied by the sound of ticking.

Several Muslim countries, including Iran, Pakistan and Indonesia, have also condemned the film.

"Freedom must always be accompanied by social responsibility," Ban said.

"We must also recognize that the real fault line is not between Muslim and Western societies, as some would have us believe, but between small minorities of extremists, on different sides, with a vested interest in stirring hostility and conflict," Ban said.

So...he wants to ban the Koran?

Oops, it looks like the management decided to abide by the honest persuasions of the Muslims.

There is no “hate speech” or incitement to violence in Geertz’ film, other than that which is quoted from the Koran and other Muslim utterances.

It has baffled me the way the west equates what the Muslems do with what Christians do. We honor their Ramadan. They use it and our holidays to attack.

The west tries to minimize the loss of human life. The Muslems do their best to destroy as many as possible.

We honor our youth and try to keep them out of the conflict. The Muslems send in women and children first in many instances.

We try to hit military targets. They take down the World Trade Center towers with as many people in them as they could affect.

When we herald this in public, Ban ki-Moon damns us and says nothing of the Muslem’s actions.

We use words to get our message across. They behead people.

Our words get more reaction out of Ban ki-Moon than their beheadings do.

We deserve the violence because of our actions. They don’t deserve words of truth because of theirs.

Dang. And the U.N. wonders why folks advocate for it to be abandoned by the U.S. and given thirty days to pack and get out.

The movie seemed mostly pro-Islam to me. It had a guy reading verses from the Koran, and then showed Muslims carrying out the teaching from those verses and/or celebrating the actions of those who did. How can this be anything but pro-Islam?

Nothing like a flaming double standard for a “protected religion”.

Nobody’s even “slamming” Islam in this film. All the quotes are from the Koran, and all the images are from publicly acknowledged Muslim attacks on Western civilian targets. Islam is “slamming” itself.

I suppose he's gotta do this or be deluged with e-mails of the "I KEEL YOU!!" variety. To suggest that showing the words of the Koran beside the images of Islam's application in the real world is somehow "anti-Islamic" is patently absurd.

This does demonstrate that Wilders' little film packs quite a punch. Ban Ki-moon, I fart in your general direction.

""There is no justification for hate speech or incitement to violence," Ban said in a statement."

That statement might make some sense if the movie were designed to incite non-Muslims to violence against Muslims. However, the only ones threatening, or committing violence are Muslims.

A movie that purports to show that the Koran encourages Muslims to commit violent acts, is banned for inciting violence -- violence committed by Muslims against non-Muslims, because they're offended at the suggestion that they're violent.

When this starts to make sense to me, I'll be very worried.

Do you believe that Christians did this?  It's my take that a true converted Christian could not do this.  I will ask you what Christian nations around the world did when these events took place.  Who put an end to this practice?  Was it the Muslems?

What you address was perpetrated by the cultist planners of a master race.  The west put an end to it and then allowed the citizens to return to their own self-rule, making even their own religious decisions.

Do you think Muslems have this in mind?

That is true. Even the perps were a part of the West. I will say though, that the West rose to the occasion and rid itself of the problem. No other religion had to help us police our own. If the Muslems would follow this model, the world would be a better place. I submit the Muslems are intent on conquering the West. I don’t believe we are intent on conquering them. We seek to live in peace, them worshiping who they want to.

In other movies this week:

Ban Ki-moon gives “Horton Hears a Who” a big thumbs-up as the feel good family film of the year.

However Ban pans “10,000 B.C.” Director Roland Emmerich has swapped disaster movies like The Day After Tomorrow and Godzilla for, well, a disaster of a movie. Maybe his last disaster epic will be yet another dreary anti-Iraq war movie, like the incredible box office bomb “Stop Loss”, now in theaters, which is also a big thumbs down.

Back to you, Roger Ebert.

The "West" is not a religion.

That's part of the difference we have to recognize to deal with these people ~ Islam is held out as a combined religion, culture, government, set of laws, and so forth.

It's democratic centrism carried to an extreme the Commies couldn't imagine.

The post I responded to initially simply misused "we" and attributed to that "we" virtues that were not true of the Nazis (or the Commies), who were also part of the "West".

From the Middle-Eastern Islamic perspective "we" all look alike. At the same time we have to remember that when given an opportunity to "chose sides" there at the beginning of WWII the Moslems chose the Nazis.

They haven't changed all that much since then either ~

You might set your mind at ease by reading all the posts and quit imagining that you've read some horrifying thing.

I'm just guessing that you are so young you've forgotten that WWII was part of the recent history of the West, and that the "West" had folks on both sides of the conflict.

A later poster noted that, in fact, I was correct that the West had a broader history than some folks are willing to grant it.

The "West" is not a religion.  That's part of the difference we have to recognize to deal with these people ~ Islam is held out as a combined religion, culture, government, set of laws, and so forth.  I agree with this.  I believe this perception was part of the reason our founders were very careful to make sure the govenrnment wouldn't be involved direction in religion.  I do believe the West was heavily influenced by a religion which does account for us going many of the things we do.

It's democratic centrism carried to an extreme the Commies couldn't imagine.  I agree.

The post I responded to initially simply misused "we" and attributed to that "we" virtues that were not true of the Nazis (or the Commies), who were also part of the "West".  Yes, the commies as well as the NAZIs were important to point out in this contect IMO.

From the Middle-Eastern Islamic perspective "we" all look alike. At the same time we have to remember that when given an opportunity to "chose sides" there at the beginning of WWII the Moslems chose the Nazis.  And this is the same bunch that seeks to herald the decadence of the West.  They sure don't have much moral high ground to make that claim from IMO.

They haven't changed all that much since then either ~  I agree.

Thanks for the additional comments.
