A public alert was issued early this evening by Buffalo Police, warning that a gang could be staging rear-end collisions tonight on area roadways and then attacking drivers as part of an initiation ritual.
Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson called an emergency news conference at police headquarters just before 6:30 p.m. to make the announcement.
He said police received "credible information" late this afternoon suggesting that the initiation ritual could involve gang member recruits intentionally causing rear-end collisions and then robbing or assaulting the other driver.
Gipson suggested motorists be aware of their surroundings. If they do become involved in a rear-end collision, he suggested they drive to a well-lit area and immediately call 9-1-1 from a cellular telephone, if they have one. Gipson also suggested motorists stay in their vehicles and continue moving until police arrive.
The Central American gang involved is considered "very well armed" and dangerous. It has a history of violence in other parts of the country but is new to the Buffalo area, Gipson said.
"This is the first time we've heard of this gang making inroads into the area," Gipson said.
Gipson wouldn't provide the name of the gang so as not to give the gang "notoriety."
The gang is known to the FBI to

If this is just a bash-Bush thread, I won't check back for an answer.
Ten bucks says this is an urban legend.
Good job on that border after 9/11 George!
Rochester has over 3,000 gang members now roaming the area, Buffalo has even more!
Which is interesting but irrelevant. Experience tells us that 90% of these “gang alerts” are false.
Lets hope so!
Or maybe these tropicos just can't drive in the snow for sh*t.
Should someone check Snopes on this? Sounds like the ‘drive with the headlights off and kill you if you flicker your lights at them’ myth.
Isn’t the best advice to make sure you have a loaded handgun in your car at all times, and shoot to kill?
Hmm...
Am sposed to head for Buffalo Monday. Am rethinking my plans. Before you all tell me not to be intimidated, please know my seriously ill husband (Parkinson’s) depends on me to care for him.
Some trips just aren’t worth the risk of having one’s normal routine disrupted.
Every vehicle here may be considered ARMED unless you see a Hillary bumper sticker on it.
This is a cruel HOAX, taking advantage of the gullability of Buffalo cops. No gang would be so INEFFECTIVE as to initiate a STUPID plan like this.
Snopes says it’s undetermined:

It did say the Buffalo PD is taking it seriously based on a shooting which happened earlier in the month. You can scroll down almost to the end and read that part (it won’t cut and paste—sorry).
Anyway, the article quotes some who say it’s a hoax as well.

A chain email? ;)
Snopes says it’s undetermined.
This hit our area a day or two ago. Police issues press release. Turned out to be nuthin.
Yeah, wasnt there something about flashing high beams or something that turned out to a myth?
Bush’s border policies are problematic to say the very least, but to start blaming Bush for gang violence is an absurd stretch, the kind of ridiculous cause-and-effect connections that liberals try to make. Eg. “The Katrina victims suffered needlessly because Bush had our troops overseas instead of here to hand out bottled water.”
The real problem here is a justice system that has become so infested—perhaps “infected” is a more appropriate word—with liberalism that looks for minutiae that will allow barbaric criminals to roam our streets.
It’s a pathetic commentary on the state of our society that every major city in this country has to deal with known bands of violent thugs roaming our streets, and we are apparently powerless to do anything about it.

You'd be out 10 bucks.
It’s clear that Snopes thinks that the Buffalo PD are simply trying to cover their embarassment at being had by an urban legend, but they’re giving them the benefit of the doubt at the moment.
The security officer at the military base where I work was fooled by the flashing high beams urban legend e-mail a couple months ago, sent out a base-wide e-mail.
If you believe that, you'll believe anything. Thanks for the laugh.
Whatever happened to be armed and aware?
“If this is just a bash-Bush thread, I won’t check back for an answer.”
You are absolutely correct! We ALL KNOW the borders were very safe and secure by all the presidents previously!
I will not be back on this thread either.

That’s how I read it.

I had people playing “tap my bumper” 30 years ago and I would just wave to them and get the hell out of there. They didn’t do any damage but they wanted me to stop and get out so they could play with me.
Urban legend or not, it would be great for the anti-illegal movement. All that’s needed is to think that they’re becoming more of a problem and maybe this can be nipped in the bud before it DOES.
Who needs this country turned into another Mexico?
(That said, there are still a lot of locals who cant drive in the snow for sh!t ;)
I don't know about this report, but they've car jacked, and killed many unsuspecting people on the road, but mostly they'll just drive up along side and shoot you in the head when they want to prove how bad they are to their buddies.
In addition, illegals, and gang members have been staging collisions for years, strictly for $$.
They pack the vehicles full of passengers and every one will claim injury after getting someone to rear end them. These rear end collisions can result in tens of thousands of dollars for the occupants, corrupt attorneys and chiropractors.
Many times the illegals and others have connections to totally corrupt attorneys and chiropractors, and all the alleged injured generally go to the same doctors and attorneys.
Many times the "injured" will go to just one appointment at their corrupt chiropractor, and then the chiropractor signs them in himself for the next 20 visits or appointments, (they never even show up) and the corrupt chiropractor charges the poor guys insurance company for every visit...The fraud just goes on and on.
First read flag is multiple occupants in the clown car.
The police in Houston also received and circulated this threat.
Funny how they can beef up patrols when they expect a higher number of drunk drivers.
But when it is a higher number of vehicular accidents or car jackings, the public should rely on their own inner strengths (as long as that does not include carrying any sort of a weapon).
Fear mongering for a political end? Nice.
What? Illegals aren’t dangerous?
Nice diversion, but that's not what you said.

And people think I'm nuts for thinking there's quite a community of people that are frustrated and disappointed that there hasn't been a major terrorist attack in the US from anyone coming across the Mexican border.
clearly MS13. I live in a big city, this is a different variation of an old tactic. This used to be a tactic for insurance fraud.
I read “False” on your link to them, not Undetermined.
Oh, I realize that they changed from earlier in the day. Poor Buffalo PD.
I doubt VERY much that it is an urban legend. Sounds real to me.
It doesn’t happen in Texas. Thank you, George W. Bush.
