Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - In a surprise move Iraqi Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr on Sunday ordered his fighters off the streets of Basra and other cities in Iraq.
Sadr said in a statement that his movement wanted the Iraqi people to stop the bloodshed and for Iraq to maintain its independence and stability. He had previously defied the Iraqi government's deadline to turn weapons in for cash.
According to reports, it is unclear if all of Sadr's followers will comply with his order.
According to reports, the United States has used ground troops in Basra.
He has ordered pull backs and cease fires before.
Tactical retreats are not surrender. Just ask Custer.
The offensive shouldn’t stop until all of his people are disarmed. Enough of this stop and go crap. People like that have proven that they cannot be trusted.
From what I've been reading, this may require a stick and a spoon to remove many of them from the streets.
Muslim definition:
Stop killing us till we regroup & rearm!
This is good news!!! I don’t think Mookie chose to end the fighting on his own, I think he ended the fighting because his troops were being slaughtered. Check out the thread below...I included links to stories about the number of his “fighters” that have ebb dieing over the last few days.

Haven’t we heard all this before from Iraq? And I have to wonder what he’s been offered to persuade him to concede.
Remember the words of little Frankie Pantangele...
Nearly impossible. Too many people, spread over too large an area, with too many hidden weapons, plus new weapons/ammo being ferried in from Iran.
No surprise, his Mahdi Army is being destroyed by the government of Iraq.
With mother's little helpers of course, US Grunts, Marines and Air Force.
Now Malaki should try him for treason and hang him along the Iranian border.
Can anyone 'splain me that?
Congressman Billybob
Never heard of him. Can I have details pls?
The offensive shouldnt stop until all of his people are disarmed dead.
Fixed it!
This is a great start. And it must be a huge boost to the Iraqi troops and their fledgling government. Success breeds success, lets keep the positive momentum going.
Thanks for that bit of good news.
“Lets hit em now, while we’ve got the muscle.”
Bump!
We also enlisted one of our AC 130’s to help the Iraqi army in Basra. I am sure Mookies people took one look at the rain of death coming from that and either crapped their pants, threw away their weapons and ran, or both.
As the saying goes, “Dat boy needs killin’, ya heah?”
(I can talk like that, ‘cause my people are from South Ca’olina.)
Yeah !
u mean crapped thier weapons and threw away their pants dont you?
Godfather II
What are you hearing about this latest move on Mookies part?
Most of them were probably dead before they had a chance to think about it at all.
I don't think Mookie's people have been treating the regular populace very well
Once the streets are being policed by people loyal to the Iraqi government, we may start seeing people informing on who Mookie's people are
Taqiyya! [Ta-key-yah] a lie if it will advance the cause of Islam.
Tears will be shed for Mookie’s ‘freedom-fighters’ in the newsroom of CNN...
We also enlisted one of our AC 130s
Once the fire from the AC 130 starts and, you live to say, “whats that”? you have lived too long!!!
You mean his surrender? Well, right after we got the word ('bout twenty minutes ago), I mean immediately after it was announced to us, we got the very familiar sirens followed by "Take cover, take cover, take cover..." BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! WHOMP!
We laughed pretty hard on that one.
BUMP
There’s little hope of a stable democracy in Iraq as long as little egomaniacs with private armies like Mookie are allowed to operate however they choose.
Thank you for the info.....and you know the drill....stay safe.
No, Jaysh al Mahdi has a great reputation among the Shi'ite population. Especially in the Sadr City area. They would provide armed resistance against the various Sunni gangs and "death squads" and basically act as a barrier for the civilians when the IA, IPs, or US Army weren't around to take care of it. As per usual, the only Iraqis who don't like JAM are the folks on the other side of the fence--Sunnis. JAM sent out their own death squads against the Sunni population (my interpreter claimed to have killed several of them on a couple of occasions when they attacked his neighborhood). JAM is not very popular with us, either, since they're the ones who like to build and emplace EFPs against our vehicles. That alone makes their eradication acceptable, in my opinion, but it'll never happen. Tack on the facts that Maliki and Al Sadr are good friends and JAM has a heavy influence on some high-ranking member of the Iraqi Army, and you'll see that JAM isn't going anywhere anytime soon. All we can hope for is that Al Sadr will actually order his people to stand down and the splinter factions of JAM will keep it to a dull roar.
I would prefer them dead - not disarmed.
Iran could and would rearm them within days..
The IRAQI surge worked this time!
We can begin pulling out later in the year if this was all iraqi army doing.
Roger that....it must truly be a “Come to Jesus” moment for those subjected to the “Puff the Magic Dragon” on steroids. ...
Especially for Islamists!
What surprise? That's what he always does:
Attack. Get beat. Offer olive brach. Make "peace". Regroup and rearm. Attack. Get beat. Offer olive brach. Make "peace". Regroup and rearm. Attack. Get beat. Offer olive brach. Make "peace". Regroup and rearm. Attack ....... Rinse & repeat ...... Rinse & repeat ...... Rinse & repeat.
Can somebody tell me why we haven’t killed this assclown about 5 years ago?
Can you say Hudna? I say we take him out for good...
I fear it is precisely the long term deep seated animosity between the literally “armed camps” of Sunni, Shiite, Kurd, Christian, and their neighbors - that will keep Iraq a very unstable and unhealthy environment for decades..
After all, it has already been centuries these same forces have been at each other’s throats... Now they are better armed, more experienced and with personal and family grudges to settle. Not a peace nurturing scenario!
For the moment - I would be satisfied if Sadr and enough of his “army” were destroyed to impress upon them the necessity to cooperate and work for peace.
It is also a matter of personal gratification I would enjoy to learn the bastard has been fed to the worms with a LOT of his thugs.
A country full of sectarian armed and murderous gangs is doomed to chaos.
The US shudda killed this fat pig Mookie back when we had the chance. He's been a thorn in our side since and I'm sure he's responsible for lost lives on our side.
KILL MOOKIE!!!
I don’t know how to take this. al-Sadr knows that when the Bolshecrats take over he will have free reign. Why he started now, unless, it is to give the Bolshies a boost from instability in Iraq. At this point there does not seem to be any reason not to send him two 500lb messages.
You can say that again!
Jan. 23, 2007 FR thread:
Is the Surge Already Producing Results?
Talk about being ahead of its time.
This is really good news.
Now the Iraqi government can go back and continue what started this:
Quietly rolling up Sadr forces and their weapons.
I have a feeling his forces won’t go for that though, so this may continue without Sadr’s public support.
Well, the silver lining here may be that after these years of constant bloodshed and fear amongst the general populace (and the fear there is very real, on both sides), they will finally just calm the hell down. Kurds don’t like Arabs, and Kurdistan won’t be relinquishing territory any time soon, but they do keep to themselves. Sunni and Shi’a live right next to each other and it seems that, for the most part, they’re all tired of the fighting. Who knows? AQI enabled the stabilization process by uniting both sects against a common foe. The Law of Unintended Consequences can rear its head in all sorts of places.
“Why he started now, unless, it is to give the Bolshies a boost from instability in Iraq.”
He started this now because the Iraqi government was jailing the leadership of his army. Sadr’s men couldn’t take it anymore and lashed out.
