This is kind of a different slant on this story. And one wonders.

New study finds living is the leading cause of dying.

From the article:

"Of course, the Mobile Operators Association more or less dismissed the study of Khurana's. They referred to it as selective discussion of scientific literature by one individual."

So predictable.

"Big Mobile Phone" dismisses science.

I wonder when Henry Waxman will call the Directors of "Big Mobile Phone" to a committee meeting and lecture them on the evils of using mobile phones.

What is curious about cell phone microwave technology is that this massive incorporation of it into society was permitted by governments without any definitive study about the impact of microwaves upon human bodies. Typical human stupidity, arrogance and love affair with its inventions. The “STUDY” we are carrying out with microwaves and magnatrons is on live human beings for the next 25 years. I watch the old I’ve Got a Secret Show - Gary Moore and the guests are smoking up a storm. Back in the 50’s and 60’s and before smoking was considered safe especially with filters and the industry squashed all the studies saying otherwise. But humans liked the nicotine impact on their emotions and so they ignored it all. Same with the cell phone - humans like being able to talk wherever they are whenever they want - some sort of verbal addiction. So no amount of science will stop this until millions and millions start dying from brain tumors.

Maybe when everything is deemed to be more dangerous than cigarettes, we can have our cigarettes back.

We must ban cell phone use in public! Millions will die horrible deaths due to second hand exposure to cell phones. It’s for the children!

I read the basic article - and I have problems with the conclusions.

The big one is that cellphones have morphed significantly in the last 10 years. 10 years ago we were using 700 Mhz FM radios putting out 1W or there abouts. Now we’re using 1.8 Ghz (I believe..) spread spectrum phones putting out 100-300mW. The energy/Hz is extremely small for the new radios.

Further, the higher the frequency - the less depth penetration it is going to have into a solid media (read skin..) (Depth penetration being a function primarily of wavelength...which is smaller at higher freqeuencies ..)

Lastly - and mostly anecdotally - it seems like most of the ham radio operators I know are at LEAST 80 years old - looks more like RF is life preserving! ;-)

I’m treating this like global warming.

And one wonders.

And one wonders if this is the same bunch of yahoos who claimed that you can get cancer from living near high voltage power lines...or from drinking coffee.....or....

I’m probably the last person on the planet without one of those annoying things but please forgive me for smirking thinking of all of the annoying people who yell into them in resturants not being around soon.

High taxes, lawsuits, yes. Subsidies for factories, yes. Ban, no.

If this is true, since cell phones have been in use for over 22 years, we should see a lot of folks keeling any day now.

At least it will help ease the social security and Medicare cost overruns with so much of the population having killed themselves by using their cellphones too often, right?

I like the idea of banning them things in bars and restaurants.

Might be bad for their employees and my health being exposed to second hand cell phone calls.

If second hand smoke is so bad, these things might well be worse.

There are 3 Billion cell phone users worldwide. That's 3x more than smoke.

So because there are three times as many cell phone users as smokers, using cell phones is three times as dangerous?

I replaced my land line with a cell phone years ago, but I've yet to see any studies that showed a real relationship between normal cell phone usage and cancer. I've heard a lot of hype that has little to do with science, but I'm still waiting for evidence.

I do at times use my cell phone for extended periods of time. However, since holding a cell phone to my ear isn't all that comfortable, I usually use my bluetooth headset for longer calls or when driving. The bluetooth headset has a lot lower transmit power than the phone itself so it emits a lot less radiation, and I'm able to set my phone on the table and walk 20 feet or more from it without noticeable loss in sound quality. If I go 30 feet away I get to be hard to understand.

That means that my cell phone antenna is rarely next to my brain for extended periods of time, and as you get farther away from the source, you rapidly decrease the amount of radiation to which you are exposed.

And maybe people (like me) that don't use cell phones unless its an emergency, would rather not be seated in bars and restaurants where cell phones are in use. Ah, can you say ban?

That idiotic comment tells me that this moron didn't bother doing any research whatsoever before writing this column. Unless they are holding the phone up against your ear for hours on end you are getting a minuscule fraction of the radiation you get from using the phone yourself, which isn't much.

If you want to avoid all radiation related to cell phones you need to hide yourself in a Faraday cage, because we are all constantly receiving radiation emitted from cell towers unless you're somewhere that has no cell coverage.

The levels are extremely low, and not harmful, but such idiots as this author can't seem to grasp that it takes pretty high levels of radiation before they become harmful.

Dr. Vini Khurana not only said that cell phones double the risk of brain cancer after 10 years...

At what level of exposure? How strong of a signal, how close to the ear, for how long?

How was this determined? If based on actual case studies, the study size would have to be huge for a doubling of the extremely low rate to be statistically significant. It seems impossible for this to be a solidly measured figure.

I have very little faith in someone who makes sensationalize and vague claims about something that doubles an extremely low risk after ten years of sustained use, yet feels that it is so urgent that he demands something be done about it even before he publishes his study and it has been exposed to peer review.

I bet more people use cotton balls than drink sulfuric acid. Therefore, cotton balls are evidently more dangerous than ingesting H2SO4.
