Crowley decides against entering Senate race by Robert Schwaneberg/The Star-Ledger Monday March 31, 2008, 8:47 AM A Navy reservist who founded his own biotech company to save two of his children from a rare and often-fatal genetic disorder has decided not to become the fourth Republican to challenge U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.).
John Crowley, 40, of Princeton Township announced he will not seek the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate. His friend, adviser and fellow Republican Bill Spadea had said Friday that Crowley was giving "strong" consideration to running.
"I am honored and humbled that so many people in New Jersey and beyond have considered that I could be the next U.S. Senator from this great state of ours,'' Crowley said. "Given the very significant commitments that I have now to the shareholders and employees of Amicus Therapeutics, to the U.S. Military and, most significantly, to my family, I must, however, respectfully decline this opportunity to serve as a candidate for U.S. Senate at this time."
Amicus Therapeutics is the Cranbury biotech firm where Crowley is president and chief executive officer. It is seeking a cure for Pompe disease, a rare and often fatal neuromuscular disorder that afflicts two of his children, Megan, 10, and Patrick, 8. At one point, doctors said they probably would not live to be 2.
Mercer County Republicans held off making an endorsement at their convention last week to await a decision by Crowley, whose life story is literally destined for Hollywood.
A book has been written about how he raised more than $100 million for a string of biotech firms researching Pompe disease; actor Harrison Ford has optioned the screen rights.

But in the final analysis he chose his duty as he saw it over personal ambition. And for this we must respect his decision.
But this is a hard day because to lose the promise of a true conservative and patriot running who had a real chance to win is a bitter pill to swallow. But we need to keep reminding ourselves of the words of Robert E. Lee.
"Duty is the sublimest word in our language. Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more. You should never wish to do less."
That being said......the lights are still out in Jersey politics.
Crowley’s simply too good a guy and too intelligent to work in what amounts to a glorified Romper Room anyway.
Can’t say I blame him. Only an idiot or a masochist would run for public office these days.
Sad but true......except these people make our laws that we all have to live under.....
I think NJ is gone anyway. They reelected Sen LOUSE-enberg in 2002 even after he said he would oppose the death penalty for the 9/11/01 terrorists. I think the state should be written off until maybe things under the Dems get so back they regain some of their senses.
He’s only 40, he would be able to run for office up till 2040. Hopefully he is waiting until better times. It would be good to get him involved in some non-partisan activity in the meantime. I don’t think I’ll be in a position to assist by 2040 though.
True enough.............I was struck by your screen name until I read your profile.........very interesting but I think you give Sulla too much latitude....he broke the mold of behavior that was later used to bring an end to the Republic.......but that’s a debate for another thread.........for this one, suffice to say I believe John intends to stay involved in what ever capacity he thinks will advance the long term interests of this country and the republican party
That is good. About Sulla, as I say on my home page: ‘ we must take his career as a warning of the temptations which may come to us, and a path to avoid.’
Check again. There is a movement to get John Crowley on the ballot. Stop by his website: http://crowleyforsenate.blogspot.com/
you are correct.........stay tuned.......it ain’t over till it’s over
