Though that sounds awkward, especially in the midst of a presidential race with McCain as the GOPs nominee, but one Washington insider claimed McCain considered abandoning the Republican Party. According to Sid "Vicious" Blumenthal, a senior adviser for former President Bill Clinton and current adviser to Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton, at one point McCain was going to leave the Republican Party and caucus with Senate Democrats.

Tried and true Clintonian tactic: Sowing seeds for the MSM to lap up like the sycophants they are
Two fold strategy: Position Hillary as the opposite candidate to McCain and remind the conservative base McCain is a RINO.

It would be one thing if his motivation was borne of sickness over the left-wing big-government decay within the party. But he considered leaving the GOP because he finds it "too conservative". There are right-wing GOP outsiders (Tancredos, Hunters, Pauls), and there are left-wing GOP outsiders (you know, like McCain with his F rating from the GOA and his C rating from the NRA).
The latter group can also be identified by their impulses to officially join the Democrats, and their consistent partnering with democrats - especially from the far-left wing of the party - on a variety of issues. Kyoto and global warming, campaign finance reform, amnesty, taxes, internationalism, and so on.
