Western and Muslim nations clash at UN body over free speech April 01, 2008 18:19 EDT

GENEVA (AP) -- Muslim and Western nations are at odds over adding monitoring of religious prejudice to the duties of a U.N. free speech expert.

The change passed 32-0 by the United Nations Human Rights Council last Friday. It refers to acts of "racial or religious discrimination" that constitute what it calls "abuse of the right of freedom of expression."

It's seen as a move against forms of expression that have offended Muslims, such as Danish newspaper cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

Canada and some European countries on the panel say the measure could curtail freedom of expression and help dictatorial regimes block dissenting views. They abstained. The U.S. shares their view but is not a member of the panel.

"the measure could curtail freedom of expression"

And yet Hollywood continues to grind out anti-war movies.

I don’t suppose this covers the Saudis outlawing Christian materials and churches.

The UN truly needs its HQ somewhere in Africa. How about Somalia?

According to radical Muslims, there is no such thing as freedom of expression because it is a concept derived from democracy and democracy is man’s law not God’s. These radicals recognize only Islamic law as binding. You cannot argue about the freedom of expression with people who refuse to recognize that right.

I’m surprised that Western nations are standing up for free speech. Is this another April Fool joke?

Gee, that's brave of them? Couldn't they at least have voted "no"?

Punt nothing, I want to see the doors chained from the outside and let the UNimals turn Jeffrey Dahmer on each other until the last surviving one finally starves.

Will this cover palestinian television also?
Will this cover imams all over the world who regularly incite their following to hate jews and non muslims?
Will this cover the protection of Muslims who convert to Christianity?
Why in the world do we still coddle to this outrageous entity called the U.N.

IT’S A JOKE. HOW IN THE WORLD CAN THEY BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY?

I’m surprised that Western nations are standing up for free speech. ++++++++++++++ When the going gets tough you can bet that most of them won't.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
And this ladies and gents is what’s wrong with the west today. To allow this to happen without outrage and massive media coverage in the west is proof that the west has basically thrown in the towel.

Actually — the only place on Earth properly configured to minimize the attraction to the feather bedding, disease spreading, local law flaunting and America hating leaches — is Antarctica.

Costs would be minimize due to greatly shortened sessions.
Labor and housing costs will diminish, when sessions last less than one day per year.

Salaries would be adjusted for the new “work year” — of one or two days.....

On the other hand,
Zimbabwe is soon to be available, might also need some peacekeepers with direct supervision, and there is little problem with parking spaces, feather beds, or the possibility of any NEW diseases.
I'm sure they hate Americans to about the same degree as most of the third fourth world.

By the same token, freedom of expression is also God’s law—we’re all free to choose, speak, hear, see good or evil. Unless Muslims are Calvinists.

Unfortunately — Zimbabwe is TOO CLOSE to the home country of the most despicable of the U.N. “membership”...

Too many would be tempted by a job with an inflated salary - and the living conditions in Zimbabwe are not that much worse than the turd world they call home....

No — to really make the needed impact on the U.N. — location , location, location....is the primary consideration....

Antarctica is still near the top of the list....
