Global warming 'dips this year' [prompting some to question climate change theory.......]

Global warming 'dips this year'

By Roger Harrabin BBC News environment analyst

Global temperatures will drop slightly this year as a result of the cooling effect of the La Nina current in the Pacific, UN meteorologists have said.

The World Meteorological Organization's secretary-general, Michel Jarraud, told the BBC it was likely that La Nina would continue into the summer.

This would mean global temperatures have not risen since 1998, prompting some to question climate change theory.

But experts say we are still clearly in a long-term warming trend - and they forecast a new record high temperature within five years.

The WMO points out that the decade from 1998 to 2007 was the warmest on record. Since the beginning of the 20th Century, the global average surface temperature has risen by 0.74C.

Rises 'stalled'

La Nina and El Nino are two great natural Pacific currents whose effects are so huge they resonate round the world.

El Nino warms the planet when it happens; La Nina cools it. This year, the Pacific is in the grip of a powerful La Nina.

In other words, we’ve decided that global warming must be true despite the evidence to the contrary and so you must suffer.

Simple question……Obviously the world’s “carbon” output has not dropped since 1998…so then how is that temperatures have not risen since 1998?

What is really scary about that line is: in science all theories should be constantly questioned...always! Science is questioning! and yet what passes for science today is a bunch of goofballs who believe in consensus. I hate socialists.

“and they forecast a new record high temperature within five years.”

Notice how they now couch the forecast “within five years”
That way they can keep everyone on track to shake in their boots over the impending doom.
We can freeze our booties off for the next four years but they will claim that man made global warming is just around the corner.

Want to drive them nuts? Ask an alarmist to define it.

They have yet to agree on a definition of “average global temperature.”

Ugh. my company decided to go “green.” They passed out reusable garbage bags, and banned water bottles, plastic silverware, paper plates, and a whole list of other things. I , of course, was pissed (but knew better than trying to argue with the fruits and nuts). This global warming/green movement needs to die, and now.

How about a TREND of the 'Average World Temperature'?

First of all, the uncertainty of the data from the earlier years has to be greater than the temperature increase we are now "alarmed" about.

Secondly, what is called the "global average temperature" is NOT. We do not have an equally spaced grid of sensors to average. Some places are overrepresented while others are either underrepresented or falsely represented with poor or proxy data. Some places are not represented. It gets worse the farther back you go in time. To call it a reliable trend is asinine.

I am only 24 years old, and I remember as a kid in the early 90’s I saw a news report that scared the hell out of me. The reporter said something like, “Scientist believe that in 12 years that the Ozone layer will no longer exist, and the sun rays will be so hot and blistering that skin cancer will be rampant.”

I remember breaking down in tears and asking my very conservative late great-grandmother if that was true, and she looked at me and said, “Don’t believe everything you hear in the news.”

Well its been over 12 years, and well...I don’t even think liberals talk about the ozone layer anymore.

Yes, the CFC scare was the same as Gorbal warming today.
You might do some research, but it seems to me that CFC causing ozone depletion has been recently debunked, and it seems that the ozone hole grows and shrinks on a regular basis.
If so, there is a lot of money down the drain in converting to
new coolants.

Very good advice.

The things that have really scared me in my life (70’s oil crisis, 80’s Japanese economic supremacy) ended up turning out the opposite from the media hype. So, instead of global warming, I guess we will get cooling instead.

Not only wasted on new coolants, but the new coolants are not as efficient as the old therefore they are contributing to so called “global warming”.

Ooooh, good call! The global warming credits sold at Wal-Mart are made in china, mostly from old lead batteries, plutonium, and formaldehyde, with a lovely coating of high gloss mercury. No carbon in them at all! They glow in the dark for easier finding, and come with a handy geiger counter to find them if you drop them beind the sofa.

Does anyone seriously believe we know what the ‘Average World Temperature’ was in 1900? To within 1/100th of a degree?

This is my pet peeve in the whole global warming scene. We aren't really all that sure about the quality of data we are getting NOW! It has been well documented how seriously compromised many of the weather monitoring stations in the US are. The first thing to do in evaluating a scientific theory is to vet the data that was used to support it. It is simply absurd to consider that the fluctuations in temperature that are seen in the EXTREMELY small data set (a couple of hundred years of poorly monitored data) are more than noise in the multi-billion year history of the planet Earth. Sad to say, no Nobel prizes are awarded for taking temperature readings. It simply isn't sexy science. It's drone work. Extrapolating from (and adjusting if necessary) the readings taken by others and pronouncing that GLOBAL DISASTER is imminent, that's sexy! It allows you to don your Captain Planet costume and save the world.

I never hear any demands for increases in the funding for the real back-breaking science that is necessary for breakthroughs in this type of science. The accurate measurements of Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler were no doubt tedious, but allowed the revolution in astronomic thought that came about. We seem doomed to massive mis-allocation of resources without doing the real science that is necessary to know if the phenomenon is even real (hint: when coercion replaces reason in scientific debate, bet that those doing the coercing are probably wrong).
