Mumpower upset about debate [vs. FR's Congressman Billybob]

Carl Mumpower plans to stay home. The Republican 11th Congressional District candidate recently got into an argument about rules for a debate in Flat Rock, which is scheduled for April 10. Mumpower voiced concerns about rules that were established to limit the size of promotional material at the event. The Times-News was forwarded a chain of emails between Mumpower and the moderator of the debate. The Asheville City Council Member's email chains are notorious in Asheville. In the past, he has scolded the Asheville police chief for not enforcing drug laws and a local business leader for allegedly hiring illegal aliens.

Here's a sample:

Mumpower fired off this comment to forum moderator Terry Hicks: "Thank you Mr. Hicks - I note that these restrictions are not a recent development and that your email of yesterday was triggered by a spontaneous need to affirm your policies. Regrettably, had I known such in the beginning I would have respectfully declined your invitation. We are, after all, in the election season and artificial efforts to impair our ability to campaign in responsible fashion seem counter productive to a principled agenda. I am not inclined to play in rigged games - however well intentioned they may be. I wish your good group and the other two other candidates every success with the event."

Hicks responded, "Dr. Mumpower, It is regrettable you perceive our efforts to be the most fair to all candidates as 'rigged games.' No other candidate, and there have been many, have felt we were being unfair to them.

The need to make our method of handling promotional materials clear to all was brought to my attention because other candidates asked the question."

This is interesting. There was a rumor floated around by some of the liberal western Carolina bloggers that Mumpower wanted to back out of the March 27 debate because he didn't like the rules. If the facts are as they're presented in this blog posting, then Mumpower seems awfully silly.

It looks like this upcoming debate will be between John Armor and Spence Campbell, then.

Mumpower is hated by the Asheville leftists like the plauge and epitomizes, in their minds, the typical liberal stereo-type character of a right wing nut job.

There are local hippies who would walk over broken glass to vote against him. Armor has had the decency to visit with some of these hippie blogger folk and discuss his ideas with them over the past couple of years. Their responses were appreciative of his effort. If any conservative candidate can assuage the Asheville-hippie, liberal anger it’s John Armor with his down home folksy way of presenting conservative common sense in a non-threatening, non-stereotypical way.

NP. Not a lot of “NC-action” going on these days. And since I can’t freep at work anymore, I’m relying on e1 else to pick up my slack and ping me to the NC-related threads.

Amen to that. Mumpower is floating around the idea that he can win in November because he'd be able to win Buncombe (Asheville) county.

Considering he's the sole non-liberal on city council, voted in only because all the seats are at-large and there's only enough conservative voters there to scrape together for one, what makes Mumpower think those liberals who so despise him will vote for him over Nancy Pelosi's resident enabler?

If anything, they'll probably be galvanized against him.

"Mumpower voiced concerns about rules that were established to limit the size of promotional material at the event. "

What does that mean? Is he referring to printed material or video ads or what?

I don't know for certain, but all I can gather is that it's his signs. At all the debates and campaign events I've seen, he places his signs all over the walls.

If I'm right, then this seems really petty of him.
