The most dangerous gang in America
BBC ^ | Thursday, 3 April 2008 | Piers Scholfield

The suburbs of the US are no longer the same as those immortalised in 1950s movies, with white families living in big houses and the father driving off to work in his Buick, past manicured lawns. These days, it is more likely that English will not even be the first language you hear on the streets.

In Langley Park, Maryland, the kiosks sell Spanish-language newspapers; the supermarket shelves are stocked with tortillas and assorted black beans.

Mexican music plays in the background while the tannoy blares out announcements in Spanish.

Outside, groups of men hang out on the street corners and their Spanish is accented - Nicaraguan, Honduran and, most often, Salvadoran.

They wait, hoping to be picked up for a day's labouring in the houses and gardens of Washington DC's middle class.

But among the hard-working families lurks a darker shadow. Violent crime

Vicious street gangs, committed to violence, have spread throughout the Americas and are now a significant threat in the US.

We visited Maria Hernandez in her apartment in Langley Park.

She welcomed us through her battered front door, which had been smashed by police in a dawn raid.

The reporter claims that “US deportation policy added to the problem, with the result that the gangs have become ever more organised and powerful.”

The reason for that, however, is the “revolving door” effect. Gang members are expelled, train new members in their home countries, and then come back.

In other words, the problem is not deportation, but a sievelike border that lets expelled criminals return any time they like.

Build the fence. Enforce the laws.

If we were invaded and taken over by a foreign army, the transformation could not be more complete. And far too many people just don't care.

Years ago, our nations police got rid of the Chicago Purple Gang and the Los Angeles White Fence Gang. White Fence has since returned. The police can get rid of the gangs if they want to and if we want them to........all depends on what the people want and how bad they want it.

Langley Park is in Prince Georges County just east of DC. This whole area near Langley Park has been a high crime area for a while. PG County is run by incompetent, liberal Democrats who have screwed up the area for some time now.

The police force is a gang too. And they are more focused on extorting revenue ticket money for the city than they are in processing violent criminals who need to be put on trial, with court time appearances for the officers, with lockup costs, etc.

Crime doesn't pay the city budget, law abiding citizens do.

No such thing happened. Bear Stears got brought down by bad, not corrupt management, AND, NO taxpayer money has been actually spent. Loan guarantees are not free taxpayer money. In fact, the taxpayer will earn 6% interest on the 30B from JP Morgan.

MS-13 started life as a group of young immigrants on the streets of California in the 1980s. After nearly a million Salvadorans fled their civil war for the US, many of them settled in Los Angeles where gang violence was rife.

In other words, M13 in the US began around the time of the last illegal alien amnesty.

Our governments response? Lets do it again!

I want to argue about the title and put a bid in for the Mexican Mafia. This is a very insidious gang, which continues to kill, but even as bad, they are taking over legitimate enterprises, including the government in some southern Cal cities. They are very active in the communities southeast of LA.

I remember when they had an operative at the DMV who would give them the confidential addresses of police officers. One attorney was fired from the AGs office for her contacts with the MM.

I recommend the 2007 book Mexican Mafia.

"Why don’t they call it suburbia?"

It's usually further out, more than an hours drive from downtown.

There's a walled community of 30,000 residents somewhere in Brazil that has 1,200 full time armed private security guards and all non-residents are searched coming and going from the 'compound.'

Spend the morning at Nassau & Wall St, and the afternoon strolling Flatbush Ave, 84th precinct in Brooklyn(into the evening, preferably) then let us know which gang presents more of an immediate problem.

and anyone who thinks that by just enforcing the immigration laws and eliminating the “bennies”, the illegals will “self-deport”, the last F.B.I. report I read regarding MS-13 stated that MS-13 had spread to 42 states and expanding...and MS-13 is “hiring” and it doesn’t care if you’re “legal” and they don’t speak English.

Deport all illegals including the incarcerated!

You're absolutely correct about the revolving door, and the article continues into that.

The part about US deportation policy making the problem worse was in the context of Salvadorian prisons. They locked up a lot of gang member, and as we deported more who faced arrest in El Sal, the prisons became a concentration for the gang where they were able to organize better than if they were spread out.

True, as much as it pains me to say. However, I think a case can be made

a) that the effect such an amnesty would have on the nation was very much a matter of theory then - it is not now. and
b) RWR & the GOP had strict enforcement measures in the original Simpson Mazolli bill which were immediately removed or ignored after passage.

The point is there is absolutely NO excuse for passage of similar legislation today.

Here in NH, spray painted walls are becoming normal. Ten years ago this rarely happened.

My guess is that this is the result of “the growing diversity of our state’s population” (code talk for illegals).

In Sanctuary LA it’s not even a revolving door. Two weeks ago an illegal gangster got out of county jail for the fourth time, released to the street without the LASO contacting HS. The next day he shot a HS football star named Shaw, after Shaw responded to him by saying he was not in a gang. The mayor and sheriff are culpable for this murder as accomplices.

Yes, it seems as if the quickest way to get out of jail without any penalty is to have no ID papers and say you are an illegal.

That also seems to be the quickest and cheapest way to attend college or get medical treatment at a hospital.
