I’m not falling for it. They’re trying to set us up for the big let down.

Realistically, while I’d like Fred as VP, the VP should probably be someone younger.

While I like Fred, I was very disappointed in his campaign performance.

Plus, does it seem wise to put two Cancer survivors on the same ticket. Survivors who are both relatively old?

Can you spell President Pelosi!

McCain/Thompson sounds interesting, but I wonder how many conservatives are pissed off at Fred for that half-assed campaign. I have to admit that I’m kinda pissed at him for that. We might have seen McCain visiting Thompson instead if Fred had gotten off of his lazy butt and campaigned.

OK... Now that I think about it, I’m more than “kinda pissed”.

I thought Fred was heading back to the entertainment industry?...... I doubt he has the least bit of desire to be VP. I suspect this is a meeting to get the endorsement from Fred and finalize an announcement event..... just a guess...

If McCain is smart, he’ll rope Thompson in to perform the same role for selecting a VP candidate that Cheney did for GWB. This would be an ideal role for Thompson, who is at his best in managing and persuading and getting things done in a linear fashion without a lot of fireworks and showboating and hogging-of-the-spotlight.

I doubt that in this case McCain would come to the same decision that Bush did, though: that his best VP choice was his VP-selection manager himself. I don’t think Thompson would want that, though it might make some sense in building bridges to “the base.”

McCain would be wisest to pick as VP someone from outside the Beltway, someone younger, with a record of accomplishment and both public and private executive experience. Unfortunately the obvious choice doesn’t sit well with much of the base...

I know Fred is younger than McCain; I mean someone young enough that they won't be McCain's current age, or older, when their time rolls around.

At least I could consider casting my voted for Thompson. This would be the only way I would vote for a ticket with McCain on it. I’m sure that is one option being considered to get a few true conservatives to vote.

And I remember all the Freepers who were pissed off at me merely for pointing out that Fred ran a half-assed campaign. Every time I did, they angrily declared that it was all part of his ingenious game plan...whatever that was.

Aside from the people who would yell "FDT = Traitor!" I can think of few "McCain compatible" Veep candidates that could do more to get the conservative movement energized than Fred at this point.

Although Fred might "move the needle" with conservatives I still think McCain's conservative backing is pretty much on life support going into November, and even if we saw Obama himself in a recorded "God D*mn America" speech a la Wright I still think McCain is in for a tough fight in November, so it's remotely possible that McCain has started to realize that Thurmond-seatholding Gramnesty will not get him into the Conservative emotional endzone.

This is still all emoting until I hear the name "Fred" leave McCain's lips.

One thing that sends "a thrill up my leg" thinking about a Thompson veepdom (even if he is locked in the attic) is the idea of having FRed, even at 65, a "heartbeat away". It's cruel to think of though. Glad to hear McCain is finally getting SecService protection.

Fred is still my man, still haven't removed or replaced my Fred08 bumper sticker (though the wife did persuade me to vote Romney in NJ at the last minute, following Fred's departure).

If Fred gets the Veep nod I am looking forward to having a "favorite Fred Thompson movies" viewing session with my family in the fall (No Way Out, Hunt for Red...etc). I will then bite the bullet and sit down to reading McCain's "Faith of My Fathers". To guard against a McCain wipeout/Obama coronation, I will read "Conscience of a Conservative" to steel myself against the winter to come.

Bottom line: The VP needs to bring some Electoral Votes with him that aren’t already Red.

Blue state GOP candidates must lead the list, or there will no victory. Something has to offset the MoveOn money that has poured for 4 years into Ohio. Those EVs must be replaced.

Could happen in a timeframe that would result in Pelosi.

I Agree that such a thing is highly unlikely but stranger things have happened and there would be some ‘outside’ incentives.

Even with Fred as his VP I don't know if I could vote for McCain. Is it possible to just vote for the VP?

In any event, I don't think Fred will accept the position. He's just signed on with the William Morris Agency to go back to acting. They're probably just watching UCLA/Memphis.

But If it is FRED or my guy let's move on do the best we can!

(The idea in part would be to reassure conservatives before actually getting to the point of naming the VP candidate.)

I hope the purpose of the visit is not to ask him to be the Vice Presidential nominee.

Picture this: McCain/Thompson run and win in 2008. McCain’s cancer returns in 2009 and he dies. Fred becomes Prez. Fred’s cancer returns in 2010 and he dies.

Some FredHeads aren’t going to like what I have to say, but oh well.

Since Fred’s old buddy John McCain got the nomination, the Thompson website only contains one word: “Success.”

If you don’t get the message from that, you’re being willfully blind.
