San Francisco Reaches Out to Immigrants
New York Times ^ | April 6, 2008 | JESSE McKINLEY

Posted on 04/05/2008 9:56:02 PM PDT by Eric Blair 2084

The city of San Francisco has started an advertising push with a very specific target market: illegal immigrants. And while the advertisements will come in a bundle of languages — English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese — they all carry the same message: you are safe here.

In what may be the first such campaign of its kind, the city plans to publish multilanguage brochures and fill the airwaves with advertisements relaying assurance that San Francisco will not report them to federal immigration authorities.

Mayor Gavin Newsom said the campaign was simply an amplification of a longstanding position of not cooperating with immigration raids or other enforcement. The city passed a so-called sanctuary ordinance in 1989.

Still, Mr. Newsom said, it never hurts to advertise. “It’s one thing to have a policy on paper,” he said. “It’s another to communicate it directly to people who could be impacted.”

The television and radio campaign will tell immigrants they have “safe access” to public services, including schools, health clinics and — perhaps most importantly — the police, something that local law enforcement officials say is a chronic problem in émigré communities.

“It is a trademark of a criminal predator to convince victims that because of the victims’ immigration status that they — not the predator — will be treated as the criminal,” said Kamala Harris, the city’s district attorney. “We want to remove that tool from the criminal’s tool belt.”

Ms. Harris said particular problems in immigrant communities include human trafficking, fraud and elder abuse, which she said was widely underreported.

San Francisco is not alone in its sanctuary status; New York, Detroit and Washington have policies that discourage the police from enforcing immigration law.

OK, boys and girls, the LA Times version of this article was previously posted. Let's try the East Coast version of liberalism. It's an East Coast West Coast war to determine who will ruin America first. Normal Americans in fly over country get to your bomb shelters.

Let's review SF and NY liberal values just for kicks and giggles...

OK...

NOT OK...

Any questions?

Okay SF, pander to Illegal immigrants, but YOU pay for them. Stop sticking your hand into the wallet of law abiding Americans to pay for your stupidity. You want illegals, then you foot the bill.

Really pisses me off to see the District of Columbia, the FEDERAL DISTRICT, blatantly refusing to enforce federal law.

Yet another reason (not as good as other ones - ie a federal district is not a state, if you don’t like it, move) as to why they should never be granted statehood state

San Francisco, the west coast cesspool needs some cheap labor to clean its toilets, clean its dirty dishes and shore up its sleazy lifestyle and sleazy politicians. What a glorious mix of everything that is wrong in our society. After all, a city full of queens needs lots of servants.

I was not born in America. My parents came here in 1969...legally. For the opportunity, not the guarantee.

I think I have made them proud and rewarded their sacrifice by being successful after struggling for years and getting my teeth kicked in.

When your parents came here in the 1700’s, 1800’s or to Ellis Island in the 20th century, there was no welfare state.

You either made it with your own sheer will and talent or you starved and died.

Let the illegals go to San Francisco or the DPRNJ, DPRNY. Let their taxpayers pay the $2,500 OB/GYN set fees for labor and delivery plus free diapers and formula.

I’m moving to South Carolina where I belong. God bless federalism.

Round up every illegal in the USA and then drop them off
to the welcome arms of the City by the Gay. Then lets see how much they enjoy their sanctuary city of illegals.

I have nothing against people coming to America for a better opportunity (with no welfare state or safety net). I don't even have anything against homosexuals. I'm just jealous that the liberal MSM has put them in front of me on the societal pecking order.

Environmentalists

Liberal Media

Homosexuals

Illegal Immigrants

Criminals

Terrorists

Mayor Gavin Newsom, along with Supervisor Tom Ammiano, held a news conference Wednesday to announce the public outreach effort, which is being funded with dollars ($83,000)from The City’s Public Health and Human Services Departments.

Services available to (ILLEGAL) immigrants without documents proving legal residence include access to The City’s public health services and hospital, library use, recreation and park programs, “Bank on San Francisco” banking and public-school access.

The “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy is not new. It dates back to a 1989 sanctuary ordinance that Mayor Gavin Newsom reinforced with an executive order last year.

Los Angeles does not consider itself a sanctuary city, but officials say police will not take part in federal immigration raids. “Our officers are not immigration officers,” said Matt Szabo, a spokesman for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

A spokesman for Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich called San Francisco’s program “a tragedy.”

“It’s an insult to the people who waited in line and filled out forms so they would do things right,” said Tony Bell. “For them, it’s a slap in the face.”

He (Newsom)acknowledged that much of the reaction to the sanctuary program has been negative, attracting even more criticism than his stand on gay marriage.

“We’ve heard from ‘The O’Reilly Factor’ types,” he said. “But we’re convinced that this is the right thing to do.”

But the campaign precedes the city’s plan in August to begin issuing municipal identification cards to city residents - regardless of whether they are in the country legally. Officials said they not only want immigrants to know about San Francisco’s sanctuary city policy, they want city workers, business owners and others to know the same.

The city recently created a position for an “immigrants rights administrator” to work with city agencies so that employees understand the sanctuary city policy and how to better serve immigrant communities.

City Administrator Ed Lee called San Francisco’s new sanctuary city ad campaign “not only the liberal thing to do, it’s the responsible thing.”

******

Mr. Lee was the Managing Attorney for the San Francisco Asian Law Caucus, for which he worked from 1979 to 1989.

He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1978.

"“not only the liberal thing to do, it’s the responsible thing.”

Of course it's the "liberal" thing to do. It's the only thing that can explain that kind of insanity.

After all, Liberalism is a disease of the mind, a psychosis coupled with decaying connective tissue.

SF's deficit will continue to pile up. As the place decays, along with the liberal minds that run it, the best of the business that reains there today will slowly trickle out, the moving trucks weaving between the the pot hole ridden decaying infrastructure.

Then SF will truly reflect the cesspool of corrupt moral values, poverty and crime the liberal mind reduced it to. The only option we should allow it is to rejoin Mexico, after all, that's what the place will look like in not too many years down the road.

I come for visit, get treated regal,
So I stay, who care I illegal?

I cross border, poor and broke,
Take bus, see employment folk.
Nice man treat me good in there,
Say I need to see welfare.

Welfare say, “You come no more,
We send cash right to your door.”

Welfare checks, they make you wealthy,
Medicaid it keep you healthy!

By and by, I got plenty money,
Thanks to you, American dummy.
Write to friends in motherland,
Tell them come as fast as you can.

They come in rags and Chebby trucks,
I buy big house with welfare bucks.
They come here, we live together,
More welfare checks, it gets better!

Fourteen families they moving in,
But neighbor’s patience wearing thin.
Finally, white guy moves away,
Now I buy his house, and then I say,

“Find more aliens for house to rent.”
And in the yard I put a tent.
Send for family (they just trash),
But they, too, draw the welfare cash!

Everything is mucho good,
And soon we own the neighborhood.
We have hobby—it’s called breeding,
Welfare pay for baby feeding.

Kids need dentist? Wife need pills?
We get free! We got no bills!
American crazy! He pay all year,
To keep welfare running here.

We think America darn good place!
Too darn good for the white man race.
If they no like us, they can go,
Got lots of room in Mexico
