One evening last July, Senator John McCain of Arizona arrived at the New Hampshire home of Erin Flanagan for sandwiches, chocolate-chip cookies and heartfelt talk about Iraq. They had met at a presidential debate, when she asked the candidates what they would do to bring home American soldiers soldiers like her brother, who had been killed in action a few months earlier.
Mr. McCain did not bring cameras or a retinue. Instead, he brought his youngest son, James McCain, 19, then a private first class in the Marine Corps about to leave for Iraq. Father and son sat down to hear more about Ms. Flanagans brother Michael Cleary, a 24-year-old Army first lieutenant killed by an ambush and roadside bomb.

I wonder if he is ashamed of his son and his service
Oh, I doubt that., he may just be treating his son the way his dad treated him.. and so on before that
thru thick and thin, many in his family have answered the call of their nation in times of war..and peace to.
I’m sure he is a proud father..
No, I think he knows enough to respect their units by NOT parading them in front of the public.
You're either being very sarcastic or the biggest troll I've ever seen.
Ok, I mis read the hole article, I am really not a fan of McCain...
Which probably only says something about you.
You can bet the MSM is working overtime to “out” his son’s unit and place of deployment. Just watch.
Yes. I believe so.
He knows what his father and grandfather went through as his sons went off to war, Mr. Hunter said. So hes got a model to follow.
Indeed, John McCains own parents were dressing for a dinner party in London when they learned he had been shot down. They went anyway, never telling other guests. Later, Admiral McCain ordered air strikes on Hanoi, where he knew his son was imprisoned.
Just before Jimmys departure, Mrs. McCain decided she had to see him one final time, according to Lieutenant Bowlby. With a few well-placed phone calls, she won permission to visit the Air Force base from which his unit would depart. When Lance Corporal McCain found out, he protested. No special favors, he said. Mrs. McCain stayed away.
God forbid someone gave him something the rest of the marines werent entitled to, Lieutenant Bowlby said.
I’m not a McCain fan but I’m sure he’s quite proud of his son, and all his kids, and would not exploit his son’s service for political gain.
That is really a disgusting statement.
John McCain's grandfather, John S. McCain, Sr. was a combat veteran.
John McCain's father, John S. McCain, Jr. was a combat veteran.
John McCain was a combat veteran.
Now, John McCain's son is a combat veteran.
Has it ever occurred to you that, in such a family, going to war to defend America is not something you brag about in public but is something that you do as an expected duty?
In the current war, McCain has done all that he can possibly do to win it, including supporting the Surge strategy that is now winning the war at a time when Rumsfeld was dead set against it and George W. Bush was meekly following Rumsfeld's lead and when opposition to that Surge strategy was devastating McCain in the polls.
You, on the other hand, seem to want to help Barack Obama lose that war by posting slander about John McCain being ashamed of his son's military service.
*******
Oh ok, I take it back and I am sorry I said it, geeesh....
Negative. He doesn’t want his kid to be targeted for scrutiny. He’s simply respecting his privacy and knows that drawiing attention to his lineage would create a needless distraction. His son is in a war zone and that’s where his son’s focus should be.
Pathetic rimes with......If I were Poet I could figgure it out I spose....but then I wouldn't look like a Pri....rimes with stick.
I am really sorry I said it, sometimes I don’t think before I type....and my thoughts get all messed up
I hope ya’ll can forgive me and I am not a Troll!!!!
Well, gee,... I'm sorry I beat up on you.
I was responding to a guy. I didn't notice "Poet gal" until I posted. Gals are sensitive ... especially poetical ones.
So, anyway, sorry. :-(
He just doesn’t pimp out his kids like Klintons. I am ashsmed of your post though.
Would love to read some of your poetry. Have never read anyone from a Heartless poet before.
Neither am I - but that doesn’t make your statement any less outrageous.
I’m not a huge McCain fan, but as a veteran myself I found it to be a great article. I don’t know if Jimmy Mccain possesses the necessary speaking skills, but it would be neat if he got a chance to stand in his dress blues with his Dad, and relate his experiences in Iraq. This, I would think, would offer a stark contrast to the military-hating Democrats......Ok OK, the military-disliking Democrats.
Ask that it be removed then.
**I wonder if he is ashamed of his son and his service**
Good grief, no. He wants him to remain anonymous. After all, it is a war. Let him serve his tour of duty and then come home.
I bet McCain is extremely proud of his son!
I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Jimmy's a chip off the old block.
**No, I think he knows enough to respect their units by NOT parading them in front of the public.**
You are remembering what happened to Prince — was it Harry in England?
Excellent point.
**hole article**
Because McCain’s son is fighting somewhere in the mideast in a “hole”.
Go away.
Hang in there, Poetgal! I understood what you were saying was not in a malicious way. Boy did you get jumped on pretty quick! I hope you didn’t get too many bumps and bruises. I think people just took it the wrong way. :)

I think the problem is that there are times when words are not only insufficient but actually detrimental to communication. For example, when the florist asked if I wanted a banner to say, "Beloved Mother" for her funeral. I replied, "No. Just, 'Mother.'" If anyone didn't know what that meant, no adjective could possibly tell them. Any adjective could only subtract from, not add to, "Mother." Just as "unique" is stronger than "very unique;" the "very" actually takes away from the full force of the word "unique."
And I think that those who understand how that applies to Senator McCain's behavior naturally are offended by any suggestion contrary to their understanding of his admirable restraint.
The word "very" in the phrase, "very unique" is simply wrong. There are no varying degrees of uniqueness, something is either unique or it is not.
That is the most uniquest fact that I have read today. :-)
i have no use for McManiac, but he's absolutely correct in this instance.
Do you know how to catch a unique rabbit?
Unique up on it.
Good point! I understood her because I’ve been there too. :)
Maybe he wants to keep his son safe in his duty. We all know what happened to Prince Harry when the Quisling press exposed his actions. Damn the NYTIMES and any other Media Monster that pursues this. Next up will be full blown pictures of the guy as love letters to Al-Quaida. Or descriptions of him as a child killing, teenager raping wedding crashing murderer.
Please remove my comment from this thread, I was totally misunderstood and I didnt mean it to come out the way it did ;-{
You have to ask the moderator—I can’t do it.
I wonder if he is ashamed of his son and his service?
Welcome to Free Republic, where the Perpetually Pissed will take an honest question and try to turn you into Satan himself. Please do not let it bother you and please realize that those that are so quick to go on the attack are usually hiding some sort of inadequacy. The favorite attack is either being called a leftist or a troll, just don’t pay any attention to these people.
Hey attackers, what ever happened to the benefit of doubt?
Because McCains son is fighting somewhere in the mideast in a hole.
Go away.
Come on Salvation, you are better than that, “Let he that is without sin cast the first stone.” The wording maybe wasn’t perfect but it was an honest question. Why do we seem so intent on eating our own?
