Skip to comments.Revered Jeremiah Wright, "former Muslim" (?!)

Today I came across this year-old, largely biographical article about Barack Obama. It reads as though Lizza relied on Obama for large chunks of the piece, with other material coming from his books and interviews with those who knew him.
About 2/3's down the page, I came across this astonishing nugget:
After many lectures like this, Obama decided to take a second look at Wright's church. Older pastors warned him that Trinity was for "Buppies"--black urban professionals--and didn't have enough street cred. But Wright was a former Muslim and black nationalist who had studied at Howard and Chicago, and Trinity's guiding principles--what the church calls the "Black Value System"--included a "Disavowal of the Pursuit of Middleclassness.'"Wright is a "former Muslim"?!
I've never seen this anywhere else. Where did Lizza get it....from Obama? From Wright (whom he apparently interviewed)?
Have any of you ever heard that before?
Does this make sense? LOL
According to what I have read, it is acceptable and even honorable in that religion to lie in order to achieve the ultimate goal.
Where there’s smoke...
You got it right. It is permissible for muslims to lie in order to further their cause.
Al taqiyah -- the principle that it is Ok to lie if it gives advantage to a Muslim over a non-Muslim.
# Dr. Wright is a student of the history of religions. His masters degree from the University of Chicago is in that discipline and his area of concentration as an historian of religions was Islam in West Africa. While a student at the University of Chicago (U of C) he studied with the esteemed Islamic professor, Dr. Fazlur Rahman.link
# Dr. Wrights Masters thesis at the Divinity School of the U of C was the Tijaniyya among the Bambara, the Fulbe and the Tuckolour. The Tijaniyya was a 19th Century Sufi movement (a sect of Sufism) which swept into West Africa during the period of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade.
islamist is as islamist does, Black Jesus here notwithstanding.
I read someplace that Rev. Wright majored in "Muslim Studies" at Howard.
I'll see if I can find it in my extensive O'bama file.
The statements of Jeremiah Wright aren’t controversial and incendiary;

If this nation elects this freak, we’ll probably have Osama bin Laden sleeping over in the Lincoln Bedroom.
When he took over Trinity United Church of Christ in 1972, Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. was a maverick pastor with a wardrobe of dashikis and a militant message.
He graduated from Howard University and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in English with a focus on African spirituals. At the University of Chicago Divinity School, he earned another masters degree in the history of religions with a focus on Islam.
Go down to second picture: Obama's Religion click on it and go down to entry under year 1990 - left hand column. You'll find it there.
This file is a very extensive compilation of Obama's history and background. I can't vouch for its accuracy - but there is a wealth of material that should raise questions and controversy in it.
Thanks. Not exactly what I’d consider a unbiased source. I tried to find a legitimate biography of Wright that mentioned his education, but I didn’t find anything.
Anybody know of historical cases of muslims utilizing takeya claiming to be Christian (temporarily) in order to advance the umma?
Wright has said he has know him for 30 years and back when he was known as Louis X, the calypso singer.

“A reader from Free Republic has dug up an old article last year (March 07) From TNR about Obama. It was written by Ryan Lizza, Senior editor at The New Republic. Itâs a biographical piece, but in the article, it explicitly states that Jeremiah Wright is a former Muslim.”
