Revered Jeremiah Wright, "former Muslim" (?!)
THe New Republic ^ | March 07 | Ryan Lizza

Posted on 04/07/2008 2:29:18 PM PDT by Timeout

Today I came across this year-old, largely biographical article about Barack Obama. It reads as though Lizza relied on Obama for large chunks of the piece, with other material coming from his books and interviews with those who knew him.

About 2/3's down the page, I came across this astonishing nugget:

After many lectures like this, Obama decided to take a second look at Wright's church. Older pastors warned him that Trinity was for "Buppies"--black urban professionals--and didn't have enough street cred. But Wright was a former Muslim and black nationalist who had studied at Howard and Chicago, and Trinity's guiding principles--what the church calls the "Black Value System"--included a "Disavowal of the Pursuit of Middleclassness.'"
Wright is a "former Muslim"?!

I've never seen this anywhere else. Where did Lizza get it....from Obama? From Wright (whom he apparently interviewed)?

Have any of you ever heard that before?

You just got a mention on Jim Quinn’s show this morning. He described you as an “astute blogger.”

UPDATE
(Moderator, can you put "UPDATED 4/11" in the title?)

Now I've come across this old Nick Kristoff column in the NYT [hat tip NRO's Campaign Spot].

It, too, is from March, 2007, the same time as the TNR piece. In this one there is no question but that the statements came directly from Obama himself.

Obama: Man of the World

In foreign policy as well, Mr. Obama would bring to the White House an important experience that most other candidates lack: he has actually lived abroad. He spent four years as a child in Indonesia and attended schools in the Indonesian language, which he still speaks.

“I was a little Jakarta street kid,” he said in a wide-ranging interview in his office (excerpts are on my blog, www.nytimes.com/ontheground). He once got in trouble for making faces during Koran study classes in his elementary school, but a president is less likely to stereotype Muslims as fanatics — and more likely to be aware of their nationalism — if he once studied the Koran with them.

[In the interview] Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.”

Moreover, Mr. Obama’s own grandfather in Kenya was a Muslim. Mr. Obama never met his grandfather and says he isn’t sure if his grandfather’s two wives were simultaneous or consecutive, or even if he was Sunni or Shiite. (O.K., maybe Mr. Obama should just give up on Alabama.)

[Ha Ha. Only us hicks in Alabama are bothered by all this~!]

So now we have two sources from the same timeframe (March 07), apparently based on interviews with Obama, wherein there was free ranging discussion of his and Wright's Muslim backgrounds. This could not have been a mistake...it was at exactly the time he was launching his campaign.

But now, a year later, the only time the media addreses the Muslim issue is to lambaste anyone who brings it up (No middle names!. He DID NOT study in a madrassas!).

He is an apostate Muslim. Islamic law demands the death penalty for that offense.

In his case I won't weep.

I can think of many more sounds that he could have picked. What about a baby cooing? He picked this sound to rub our noses in it.

I think its safe to say that Obamas church is really just the Christian branch of the Nation of islum.

Look at the guy who replaced Wright, they even have the same bowtie thing going, these people are Farrakhan with a Cross around their neck.

I can’t get that image to play, but I saw Moss on TV once and parts of his Easter Sunday sermon where he compared Wright to Jesus, no different from the rants of Wright himself if you ask me.

True. Sunnis and Shiites would both consider “black muslims” to be damned heretics suitable for beheading, although they might qualify as “people of the book.” Funny nobody asks Farrakhan if he is Sunni or Shiite. He's neither. He's not a muslim at all. “Black Muslims” believe that the idea of a “mystery god” in heaven is a lie invented by white people, and that the only real god is black people.

In other words, it's nothing but eighteenth century European "enlightenment" rationalism dressed up in non-"western" garb.

It's most ironic that lefties love "indigenous pipples" and hate rednecks when rednecks and "indigenous pipples" have much more in common than either does with "enlightenment" leftists.
