ABC's Martha Raddatz asked American soldiers in Iraq what issues are most important to them when looking at the presidential candidates.
Though the military is not supposed to engage in partisan political activity, these soldiers spoke out about their personal endorsements, and their opinions are likely to matter. In 2004, 73 percent of the U.S. military voted for a presidential candidate, and officials believe it may be even higher this time around.
PFC Jeremy Slate said he supported Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., because of his stated intention to pull out of Iraq right away.
"That would be nice," Slate said, "I'd like to be home, yea."
SFC Patricia Keller also expressed support for Obama, citing his representation for change.
Spc. Patrick Nicholls from Eggawam, Mass., pointed out that many soldiers on the frontlines frequently think about their families back home.
"We think about how our families are doing back home. That's a major concern, like how the economy is doing, also as well as where we're going to be in the future. Because really, truly, what we consider we're doing, we're doing a valuable job, we want to make sure that the efforts we make are appreciated."
He suggested he was too engaged in Iraq to keep up with politics back home. "I haven't really been following it too much since we've been over here, ma'am," he told Raddatz. "So, don't really know which issues are too important to me right now. ... I don't know who's running, ma'am."
Lt. Leah Wicks said that, tied into concerns about her family's welfare, were concerns about the economy, "where we're going to be in the future."
Only moments before speaking with ABC News, the troops had been listening to Vice President Dick Cheney give a rousing speech, but it didn't change .....

well if ABC is right our soldiers are missing some critcal thinking ability
McCain will win over 75% of the military vote.
I would certainly hope so
Did he think he was joining AmeriCorps or the Peace Corps? What a goof! LOL
Not surprising at all.
Just like the ABC report a few weeks ago that interviewed several Iraqi soldiers and found “not one” that supported McCain. Then a few days ago stories came out that people in Iraq were praying for a McCain victory and everyone THAT media source talked to feared a democrat victory.
I’m wondering how many people they had to ask before they found an Obama supporter. Also, how overwhelming the support for Obama would have been had they asked the terrorists our soldiers are fighting.
who to believe?
PFC Jeremy Slate said he supported Sen. Barack Obama
Stupid is as stupid does.
With about 1.5m active members, it shouldn’t be ‘unexepected’ at all that we find ‘many military persons’ support Obama, Hillary, or even Pastor Wright.
Pardon me, It was CNN who could not find any Iraqi’s supporting the republicans:
A real deep thinker here.
So only Soldiers who are fighting Al Qaida are good soldiers if they agree with us politically.
Thanks for clearing that up.
Yea but they found a whole 5 or 6 soldiers who support Obama
I live in Agawam, Mass. Pretty sure Spc. Patrick Nicholls does too... not Eggawam, Mass. Such an easy fact to check, wonder what else is inaccurate?
God Bless our troops everywhere.
I'll second that
Profiling for idiots, you might call it.
No, the only good soldiers are the ones that actually understand the mission. This guy does not. he’s a moron. Blindly supporting all soldiers or putting them up on a pedestal is as silly as blindly supporting all Republicans, or all fellow Christians, etc.
Sounds to me like this soldier is looking to the public's response to see if what they are doing is good. If the efforts made are not appreciated, does it make the mission less noble? If they are appreciated, does it make it more noble? No and no. Doing the right thing should not be based on if it's appreciated or not. Doing the right thing is simply that...doing the right thing...regardless.
bump
About the same % of Union soldiers voted for Lincoln in 1864.
The remnant voted for the surrenderMonkey copperHeads.
Doesn’t understand the mission the way you see it.....
Get ready for the D’rat media to spend the next several months pushing stories like these.
They will do everything they can to get Fauxbama elected.
Bank on it.
ABC no doubt looked long and hard to find Obama supporters among the military, I’m sure there’s a few Hillary supporters hanging out as well. If you looked really, really hard you might even find a Nader freak or two; but really, how important is any of that considering we all know that republicans will sweep the military vote.

Private Pyle is a rabid OBAMA man.
Ooooo, did I hit a nerve? Look, I come from a military family. There is no reason to support all of the troops if some of them want the mission to abruptly end.
...only one...out of how many? ...cherrypicking, it seems. :/
Spc. Joseph Lindsesdt, who is from Alaska, said he was watching for consistency of the candidates’ views. “The steadiness of the candidate, whether they’ve changed their views, constantly, over time, or with political wind, as I like to put it.”
To that end, Lindsesdt’s pick is Obama. “The fact that he’s followed his views, regardless of what they have been [sic] and whether I’ve agreed with them or not, sometimes. But he’s been steady the entire way.”
When asked if he was concerned about criticism that Obama had less political experience than some of the other candidates, the battle-weary soldier replied, “No, I think being a decent leader doesn’t have to do anything with experience much.”
********************
That one certainly is missing some thinking ability...
Either that, or the news isn’t getting out there.
You don’t have to agree with everyone but still support EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE TROOPS. Even the ones who do think their mission has value.
This shows you what Obama is doing to the morale of both sides of this conflict: he’s demoralizing the weaker minded troops by dangling the carrot of coming back home soon, while emboldening our enemies by making them think if they can hold on a little longer they’ll be able to dance in the streets claiming victory once we leave.
Obama is a sick individual.
You’re being obtuse again. Consider that the guy didn’t have even as much time to prepare his answer as you had typing out your response. Hair splitting critiques are not always called for.
I only support the ones who support the mission, currently. If a troop is against the mission it’s likely he’s doing harm to morale.
The media makes a point of finding pro-Dem soldiers. In ‘04 they showed Kerry supporters when it’s likely he got maybe 20% of their votes.
read the comment section on the ABC page. A Vast majority of our military will be voting for McCain without a doubt.
Notice the title: Surprising Political Endorsements By U.S. Troops
What’s surprising? ABC found 5 guys in favor of Obama in the entire military? wow. They know the truth that our troops overwhelmingly will vote for McCain, that’s why can’t say “majority” or even “large percentage”, they’d be caught paints down in their own lie. No surprise ABC are a bunch of scums who know nothing and care not for the opinions of the majority of the troops serving. Remember, lying is their business. That is the business of liberal media.
God Bless our wonderful Military
Its likely he is doing his job despite his disagreements. He deserves same love and admiration as the guy next to him who is fighting the same enemy and has different political views.
Your selective support is probably doing much more harm to morale then this Soldier would ever do.
If 100% of the Soldiers were to agree with every war that was fought, we would have lost all of them.

OBAMA ?, OBAMA? Who said that? Who the f*** said that?
Who's the slimy little communist s##t, twinkle-toed c##ksucker down here who just signed his own death warrant?
Wake me up when ABC manages to find five conservatives in their news operation.
Yawn. You’re boring me with your hand-wringing emotionalism. It’s time for the soldier mentioned as voting for the sake of coming home to walk like a man.
I wonder how many troops they had to interview to get the desired result, or perhaps they knew about their political leanings before hand.
Great movie.
Oh, thank you for calling me out for hair splitting. Your right, words mean nothing. Sorry Uriah, I take words at face value. I assume he meant exactly what he said and has the ability to express himself clearly. (And actually, I thought of my comment as soon as I read that line...I didn't formulate it while typing.)
This is such a load of crap.Where is the barf alert?
Emotionalism is unable to support or root for a Hero (as a matter of fact viciously attacking him and insulting him) who is risking his life every day to fight the common enemy just because he has different political point of view.
The place to settle political differences is ballot box.
When a Solider is on battlefield, or at home, it doesn’t matter what their views are, they are still just as Heroic as next guy with different views.
Unable to contain polical feelings is what would qualify as emotionalism.
I would bet you they are REMFs.
Where’s the UpchuckOmyGoshYellowJournalism alert?
This is a total BS story. I bet ABC ‘editor rights’ that McPain doesn’t get less than 75% of the military vote.
When I win, I turn over my editor rights immediately to BuckHead.
Read em and weep.
