Bush Biographers Mixed On Script For Oliver Stone's 'W'

Bush Biographers Mixed On Script For Oliver Stone's 'W'

By Stephen Galloway and Matthew Belloni

April 7, 2008

President George W. Bush is a foul-mouthed, reformed drunk obsessed with baseball, Saddam Hussein and a conflicted relationship with his dad. Or at least that's how he's portrayed in the script for Oliver Stone's upcoming feature "W."

But how accurate is that depiction?

As the film preps for its April 21 start date, The Hollywood Reporter sent a copy of the screenplay to four Bush biographers for their comments. The draft is dated Oct. 17, 2007, and has recently been circulated to talent, though a person close to the film said the script has since gone through at least two drafts.

Naturally, what a director does with a script is how a movie is ultimately judged, but because this screenplay depicts a sitting president and the run-up to the war in Iraq, its authenticity is becoming a hotly debated subject -- not to mention the fact that any historical material Stone has touched has become controversial.

Reactions to the script from the biographers were mixed. They said specific scenes are largely based in fact but noted that the screenplay contains inaccurate and over-the-top caricatures of Bush and his inner circle.

“But how accurate is that depiction?”

I can’t believe that anyone really believes that accuracy is a concern of Oliver Stone’s.

I didn’t think you could put “accurate” and “Oliver Stone” in the same sentence without risking some kind of linguistic matter/anti-matter reaction, thereby endangering the entire literary world.

He’s hoping to get it released before the November election? He does know Bush isn’t on the ballot, right, so no one really cares?

Yep, another Stinkbomb from Stone.

"...Stone has said his goal is to release it while Bush is still in office and possibly in time for the November election."

Hmmmm... anything of importance happening around November 2009? I am tired of these sissy movie makers poking at stick at my President. Anyone want to load up the truck and head for Hollywood to show these cowards a Texas sized butt whooping?

Who killed JFK again, according to Stone?

Oh, yes, it was a consortium of the CIA, the Mob, two gay New Orleans rogue agents, and LBJ.

Stone has about as much honesty and integrity and Bill Clinton and Elliott Spitzer on a spring break road trip.

I'm hoping it is another smash hit bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars domestically like 'Redacted', 'Syriana', and most recently 'Stop Loss'.

It is time once again to show that the Bush regime is an aggressive, warmongering clique intent on oppressing the workers and peasants and serving as lackeys of the Wall Street imperialists.

This thing will make about $20K from the MoveOn types. No-one else will pay money to see it.

If I hated GWB why would I go see a gross charactering of him? I wouldn’t. I would rather see a lampooning of him, and this film is not looking like it’s going to be a comedy.

Another failure for Oliver Stone.

I think the word you are searching for is “oxymoron”. It would seem as though this is yet another example of the use of the word as opposed to the traditional “he was an honest thief”.

I really need for the left to stop this. Would they would scrutinize the candidate who most represents their ideals with the same fervor.

George W. Bush, though not perfect by any stretch, has managed to do a reasonably decent job on protecting us which, as I recall, is the primary purpose of government. So far as I know he is a decent husband, father, son and brother. When called home, I believe he will receive as fond a reception at the feet of his professed Savior as any Christian I know.

For those who would deny that, I say take a look at the lives of Abraham, Moses, King David, the list is too long to type. All were men of faith who were also flawed at various and sundry times in their lives. I just can’t get over the vitriol. It seems so sophomoric and unreasoned.

That was proven by his "JFK". Half of that movie was made-up.

And half of them won't even pay to see it - they'll download a pirated copy off the web and show it in one of their little neighborhood B. Hussein Obama fundraisers.

Stone is a combat veteran of the Vietnam war, one of only 3 Harvard grads to ever see combat in that conflict. He's earned the right to criticize. Our prezhidint with that phony Texas accent o' hizn is an incompetent.

Another anti war bomb in the making.

I doubt it. With a 28% approval rating among his own constituents and in the single digits in most of western Europe, Stone's movie is bound to do well.

Are you talking about his movie, JFK? If you are then please be aware that the movie was based almost entirely on New Orleans DA Jim Garrison's book, "On the Trail of the Assassins." I certainly don't believe in the literal truth of the movie or the book. But I still believe that there was a conspiracy to murder JFK.

All movie makers embellish their story lines. It's part and parcel of making their film appeal to the widest audience.

LOL! Bush has an over all approval of about 36% and amongst Republicans about 60% plus. Nice try at imitating CBS.

I disagree. It's not that I think Pres. Bush does not have class; I just think that he hasn't put all that much effort into "handling" any of his critics. He has given virtually no response to some of the worst accusations. That would be fine if these were merely personal issues, but largely these are big political issues, such as the Iraq War, Katrina, etc. where, in defending himself, he would also be defending his supporters and conservatives in general. Instead, he has seemed resigned to let whomever slander and libel him and all he has done for the last 7 years.

My idea of handling something with class would be to give responses where appropriate, but in such a way as to retain dignity (rather than getting all red-faced and nasty).

That's a big steaming pile of crap. As demonstrated by Kerry, Murtha and Benedict Arnold, military service is not an automatic lifelong pass on all dishonorable or harmful actions later.

Your Vietnam combat hero Oliver Stone idolizes and promotes Fidel Casto, Che Guevara, Hugo Chavez and even Colombia's FARC ... sub-human butchers all.

Mainly because they are so consumed with hatred that they think their behavior is normal and that everyone should be that way.

First, you stated 28% amongst his constituents. You lose on that one. Second, that’s an AP poll. You lose on that one. Try Rasmussen where Bush averages 38% nationwide with both parties.

You lose.
