Los Angeles considers global warming tax
The Orange County Register ^ | April 7, 2008

Posted on 04/08/2008 7:39:55 PM PDT by george76

To fight global warming, a bill in Sacramento would enable Los Angeles County transit officials to increase taxes on motorists. It's a bad idea that may foreshadow even worse to come.

Billed as a "climate change mitigation and adaptation fee," the measure would cost motorists either an additional 3 percent motor fuel tax, or up to a $90 annual flat fee, based on vehicle emissions. The new charges would be on top of taxes already paid at the pump. Either option requires a majority approval by a vote of the people. Climate has changed as long as the Earth has spun on its axis. It's been considerably warmer in recent centuries than today, and during those periods humanity simply adapted, indeed, flourished with fewer cold-weather deaths and more abundant crops.

But facts don't deter schemes like Mr. Feuer's to raise $400 million in additional taxes to pay for already funded transit projects. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority would have to place the issue on the ballot if AB2558 becomes law, and probably would do so because the agency would reap the bounty.

We hope, however, that motorists see the ploy for what it is and reject the additional tax. If not, it's a good bet this scare tactic will be repeated throughout the state.

Wow, finally a real solution for the global warming problem. Raise more taxes for the Los Angeles County transit. More money for the government to spend is the solution!!!

Exactly, the idiot would just stare dumb-founded if asked this!/sheesh

Here’s an idea. Los Angeles would have much less smog and carbon dioxide if 5 million people were sent home. Just think how much fuel could be save if we could actually average 60mph on the freeway instead of 15mph.

An excellent reason to leave Los Angeles! Who’s going to be left to pay the tax?

I’ve often said, there should be a tax and liberals, since they’re the ones who get in a lather over stupid crap like global warming, and want the government to do something about it. If they want government action, let them pay for it.

To the liberal, there’s no sacrifice too big for somebody else to make.

This is why Rush says follow the money. This whole global warming BS is about using global warming as an issue to get governments to extract more money in the form of taxes from the public and "the big corporations" and give it to the liberals to prove their bogus bs about global warming. The global warming movement reminds me of the protection racketeering by the mob in the 20's. Pay us and we will protect you. Ergo, the Greenies say pay your hard-earned MONEY to our tax collector, the government, who is our partner in racketeering to take your money and give it to us...and we will protect you from global warming.

NO DIFFERENCE!

How about a tax on illegal immigrants, their grafitti spraying offspring and their illegal children born in hospitals at expense...how about $25,000 just to cover the cost of them coming here and using all of our free services, like 3-5 kids in our public schools, births at $5,000 per kid, etc.

Just think how much fuel could be save if we could actually average 60mph on the freeway instead of 15mph.

Sorry guys, but the days of driving 60 on the 101 are long gone... And the illegals aren't the problem, most of them don't even own cars to begin with.

There are solid reasons for LA's traffic and smog. Both of which have gotten better since the '70s due to (you aren't going to like this - regulation), but are ultimately doomed. The whole city's setup has simply become more than the it can bear: it is far too decentralized. You see the same thing happening in Houston, Atlanta, Dallas...

The last time I was down there, the traffic through the SF valley from Woodland Hills on Ventura fwy to Holywood fwy to 5 to downtown or even the other way, 101 to 405 to 10 east to downtown, seemed much better than pre 1992.

Am I imagining things, or did they do away with the carpool lanes on those routes?

Conversely, here in WAtHRtheythinkin, they're slapping diamonds on 3 lane (per side)roads - and some stretches of 2 lane. The puget sound area - with the notable exception of north of Snohomish County, where it's actually the Salish Sea, seems to have gotten as worse as LA has gotten better....traffic wise, we still only have a limited amount of smog or CO2, and almost all of King County is inhabited by non breathing zombies.

Not sure about the current carpool routes except for the San Bernardino Freeway from Upland to downtown. That is a 3-person carpool lane.
