Much hay was made nearly a year ago when Oprah Winfrey announced that she would support — and campaign for — Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama. Her effect in boosting support for Obama in early primary and caucus states like Iowa (which he won), New Hampshire (which he lost) and even South Carolina (which he won) is debatable.
After all, according to a national survey of Democrats conducted in December 2007 by ABC News and The Washington Post, 82 percent of respondents claimed Oprah’s endorsement would make no difference in their vote, while 8 percent said it would make them more likely to vote for Obama and 10 percent indicated it would make them less likely to do so.
But what has received far less attention is the impact Oprah’s endorsement has had on her own popularity...
And then, seemingly out of nowhere, Oprah announced on CNN’s “Larry King Live” on May 1, 2007, that she would officially endorse her longtime friend Barack Obama for the presidency — the first time she had ever thrown her support behind a political candidate...
Almost instantly, Oprah’s popularity in America plummeted.
An August 2007 CBS News poll showed only 61 percent of Americans were favorably disposed to her — a considerable drop of 13 percentage points from a similar survey conducted just seven months prior.

Well in the article we find Ophra’s popularity has been over taken by Ellen DeGeneres. That might defeat your thesis about sensible people.
All it means is that Oprah's Hillary supporters were put off by her Obama endorsement. Most conservatives probably don't watch Oprah. I've seen her show only twice--when George W. Bush was on in 2000, and when Condi Rice was on.
Heh... thanks george76... of course, there was also that scandal regarding that “school” she opened in Africa...

I doubt it. it's too complicated for them, and too few will take 5 minutes away from what ever is amusing them to try figure it out.
She certainly does love herself. I don’t think she cares about numbers.
IMHO, you can easily extend that to almost all of what appears on television, certainly all that appears on broadcast networks.....
Don't kid yourself. Oprah did not get to where she is today by ignoring the numbers.
Oprah has committed one of the Classic Blunders, the most famous of which are getting into a land war in Asia or going in against a Sicilian when death is on the line. Less well known, but equally important, is that entertainment figures who go into politics just wind up losing audience and making themselves look stupid.
Compare the way Oprah appears while stumping for Obama to the way she looks on her television show, where she controls the lighting, photography and all other elements.
Quality control in the field is a serious challenge!
Ultimately she will be sorry she stuck her head up for Barack McGovern. Rezko and wright will stick to him like glue and she will be embarrassed.

Seen that just last night! Pity the poor sheep that follow her every word. The one lady in the audience who defended the need for Jesus was great!
Barry’s Sugar Obama Mama could throw her boy toy under the bus. I have these fantasies in which Oprah says the minute I heard Barry’s Uncle Jeremiah start on his anti-American hatred, I ran not walked out of that church. Whatever, Oprah seems to have shown better judgment by letting her feet do the talking, than Barry showed by thinking his dear hate mongering Uncle Jeremiah would never do him dirty by selling the media the DVD’s. Barry is simply trying to run out the clock and get the nomination before Uncle Jeremiah gets in front of a camera and explains himself, and before the time might come when Oprah explains WHY she left the church, neither of which could help Barry.
I haven’t read it all; is the theory that her sheeplike minions don’t want her to be “political,” or is it just that her sheeplike minions are Hillary supporters?
Her Sunday evening show "The Big Give" is very entertaining. I'm hooked on that.

Remember when Oprah got lots of public exposure when a car company gave away a bunch of new cars to her fans ?
The car company ( forgot which one ) was happy to get the advertising and public exposure by donating the cars.
Oprah was shocked that the IRS tax code would be involved. Neither she, nor her staff, nor the fans who received the ‘free’ cars were aware of the IRS gift tax rules.
Lots of eggs on everyone’s faces.
Many apparently had to decline the free car because they could not afford the taxes.
Never heard the final results : if Oprah offered to pay the taxes, etc ?
