George Bush vs. John McCain: World Vision
Human Events ^ | 4/9/08 | D. R. Tucker

Posted on 04/09/2008 12:40:17 AM PDT by MartinaMisc

Will George W. Bush go down in history as the last Christian Republican President?

If John McCain wins the November election, he will become the first Republican since Richard Nixon to win the Presidency without having any real connection to Christian conservatives. McCain is, at bottom, a secular Republican, one whose vision is not guided by the spiritual force that governed the Reagan and Bush 43 administrations.

Reagan and Bush 43 were committed Christians; voters of faith took comfort in the fact that both men believed in God and turned to Him for wisdom and guidance. It’s hard to imagine Reagan and Bush 43 being as influential as they were without their unshakable religious faith.

Reagan won in part because Americans had grown sick of the secular vision of the 1960s and 1970s. Yet, after Reagan left office, secularism returned with a vengeance; by the late-1990s, America had seemingly moved into a post-Christian era, with the country’s popular and political culture exhibiting few, if any, signs of a belief in a higher power.

Were it not for President Clinton’s actions in the Lewinsky case—actions that antagonized Christian conservatives and motivated them to stop his partner-in-crime and would-be successor, Al Gore, from winning the White House—Gore would have decimated Bush in the 2000 election. America had become so off-the-charts secular in the 1990s that the thought of voting for a man who claimed that Jesus Christ was his favorite philosopher would have been regarded as a perverted joke. Take away the Christian conservatives who backed Bush as a means of cleansing the White House of the Clinton-Gore administration’s perfidy, and Bush would have been beaten down like Bob Dole.

“McCain is, at bottom, a secular Republican,”

Is that true?

How do we know that?

I have no particular reason to believe that McCain is a secular man. Not all of us wear our faith on our foreheads. What does he himself say about this issue? What about his actions - are they in line with a Christian man or a secular humanist?

God. What a vise this leaves us in. I think we need to keep repeating this portion of the first amendment or prohibiting the free exercise thereof

too many fixate on the Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion part.

Does this mean we get to blame Bush’s Christianity for his compassionate “conservative” decisions to promote illegal immigration, bloat the Dep’t of Education, and transfer wealth with the prescription drug entitlement?

No fan of McCain but Bush certainly has set the bar low for his successors. Best thing about Bush is that he wasn’t Gore or Kerry. Suspect the same will be said about McCain. Miserable excuse for a president but better than the Dim alternatives...and religious beliefs (or lack thereof) have nothing to do with that assessment.

What a load of garbage. If there were actually Christians running this country, it wouldn't be so morally bankrupt like it is today. The government is full of greedy, corrupt morally bankrupt traitors that are selling us out. Certainly not Christians who care about the preservation of this nations sovereignty, and society's moral integrity.

If this author thinks that up till now we have been guided by Christian principles, He needs to go learn what being Christian means.

On the whole, though, it is a good article in that it clarifies a few things about the stature these days of "the moral majority", which AFAIC is shorthand for "ordinary Americans", or what's left of us.

Sure, diseased personalities have always been more strongly motivated to jump to the front of public affairs: Roscoe Conkling and Aaron Burr come to mind. FDR, LBJ, and BJ Clinton are also excellent examples.

But the bulk of the people have generally been virtuous. The really vile thing Clinton did was deliberately, like Dennis Miller's evocation of the Devil in his great colloquy with Holly Hunter in Broadcast News, to work corruption in the People themselves.

People like real Americans will always be truly hated by the other kind, the vice-ridden and valueless. Up next: the walls closing in, followed by persecution, "reeducation", and eventually death camps.

Jimmy Carter was quite the Christain and so, arguably, is the Reverend Jeremiah Wright.

The problem involved with all this, is that some people believe that Chrisianity equates to socialism. Also some people believe that stating you are Christian means you actually are one.

Last weekend I saw a television program that mentioned the Soviet Union sentenced U2 pilot Gary Powers to 10 years in prison when he was shot down over Russia.

I couldn't help but compare this to the 11 years that Ramos and Compean are being imprisoned in the US for simply not filling out the proper paperwork after shooting a drug runner.

I don't think a "Christian" President would have allowed this travesty for one second. Maybe the author has the terms "Christian" and "bought and sold" confused?

Highly questionable statement.

What people seem to forget these days is that W was the "hot" politician of the moment in the late 90's. He was the so-called compassionate conservative poster boy, remember?

Gore was seen then what he is mostly seen as now - a big weenie.

If anything, I was surprised Gore kept it as close as he did.

Number one, “Ace” McCain lies about being a member of a Southern Baptist Church.

Sharing your faith isn’t wearing it on your sleeve, or forehead as you put it.

McCain’s language and anger towards others tells me a lot about his relationship with God!

IF mcnasty wins, he will be little more than a one term place holder to keep two racist commies out of the Whitehouse.

While your question is indeed honest, the answer is found in Scripture. Briefly two things:

First Jesus said, "You will know them (fellow Christians), by their fruits (deeds, behavior, etc)."

Second Jesus said: "Go out in the word and preach the Gospel to everyone."

You can without much doubt tell, whether one who is in the public eye, is following Christ or secularism.

So true. I see them both as secularists. Both globalists who's agenda is helping to usher in the one-world government that is to come, and therefore not really Christians at all.

The Bible is specific about not everyone who says..."Lord, Lord!"...will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

McNasty recently revealed his hatred for Corporate Executives by pointing out that they make too much money and that they should be limited to what they can earn.

The man is a Socialist in a RINO costume. CFR is the “Earmark” of what McCain is all about from the very core of his spiritless soul. He is a Statist and a Government drone to the very root of his character.

If he wins, he WILL also make sure the “Fairness Doctrine” and countless other illegal modifications to the Constitution are made. The Forefathers would roll over in their tombs if they knew that America had elected a President who has dedicated himself to overturning their most brilliant work.

Thanks for reminding us of the RINOness of McCain. We all know this and it does indeed suck. But what are we gonna do? It will be much much worse with either of the other two in office. What do you think the Forefathers would think if we elected outright Communists to the Office of the President? This is why we look at McCain as a placeholder. No conservative likes it, but what choice do we have. I’d rather cut off my foot rather than cut out my heart. IOW McCain will further the illness that is socialism in America, but the other two may very well kill us.

This is not a Christian nation, it simply has Christians in it. Along with every other religion on the planet.

Even some here on FR, it’s truely sad that secular leftims has infiltrated “conservative circles” to the point they believe that true Christians are the enemy!

A few days before the election it looked like Gore was going down to defeat...then the DUI story from 1976 came out and dominated the news the last few days before the election. If not for that Bush might have won by several million votes...those of evangelicals who stayed home or didn’t vote for anyone for President.
