Dowd: Condi 'Instrumental in 9/11 Blunder'

As accusations against Americans go, surely there's none more serious than that of responsibility for 9/11. Yet Maureen Dowd has seen fit to level just such a charge against Condi Rice en passant: as a simple afterthought, no explication or justification offered.

There I was this morning reading Maureen's musings on yesterday's hearings with Gen. Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker. Pretty standard Dowd fare: a couple Shakespearean quotes pressed into service, a snippy sobriquet [dubbing Petraeus and Croker the "Surge Twins"], when suddenly came this [emphasis added]:

"A confused Chuck Hagel asked the pair: 'So, where’s the surge? What are we doing? I don’t see Secretary Rice doing any Kissinger-esque flying around. Where is the diplomatic surge? ... So, where is the surge? What are you talking about?'

"Condi is too busy floating trial balloons about being John McCain’s running mate to bother about the fact that she was instrumental in two historic blunders: 9/11 and Iraq."

I hate to defend Dowd, but maybe all she’s saying is that Rice was a high foreign policy official at the time those events happened. She’s assuming that both 9/11 and Iraq were disasters. If disasters happen on your watch, it doesn’t help your reputation. 9/11 was a disaster. Iraq is still a work in progress that may turn out to have been a disaster, a brilliant success, or something in between.

With respect, Dowd went well beyond saying it happened on Condi’s watch. She explicitly alleged that Rice “was instrumental” in the “blunder” of 9/11.

There is no logic or common sense in her writing. None is usually required at the MSM, provided the author supplies plenty of virulence directed at the class enemy. Rush was talking about this yesterday. He suspects either the Obama or Hillary campaigns are the ones spreading this rumor.

And exactly what was the "blunder" on 9/11? Forgetting the events of that day, which is what your crowd seems more than happy to do, is the greatest blunder of all.

Perhaps Dowd was too busy sipping Cosmopolitans during the Clinton administration to have noticed the numerous blunders that allowed Bin Laden to escape assassination or capture or the wishy washy responses to the first Trade Center bombings, the bombing of the USS Cole etc. that led to the 9-11 attacks

Hi Jonny. Thanks for pinging me to this thread and giving me the opportunity to comment on an important topic, made all the more critical now that Obama, an avowed Marxist, may become our next president.

The blunder directly related to 9/11/01 actually happened in 1993 when Bill Clinton's administration decided to treat the first World Trade Center bombing as a garden-variety crime instead of the act of war it really was.

Leading up to 1993, American presidents, including our beloved Ronald Reagan, had made a series of blunders over the years both in not recognizing the threat radical Islamism posed, and in avoiding the need to confront it head on:

The worst blunder, of course, was Jimmy Carter's triplet mishandling of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (8/1978), his tacit approval of the ouster of the Shah of Iran (2/1979), and the Iranian takeover of our embassy (11/1979) and resulting hostage crisis.

Sad to say, the second worst blunder prior to 9/11, was President Reagan's decision to turn tail and run after the 1983 Marine barracks bombing in Lebanon.

The third worst was Bush 41's decision in 1991 to stop at the Kuwaiti border instead of marching all the way to Baghdad while we had the overwhelming force in theater to take down Hussein the right way.

But the past is past and cannot be undone. Today, we on the Right side of the political spectrum simply cannot afford to make the critical mistake of misunderstanding the Left's motives. Although Leftists are enthralled with the concept of an all-powerful central government, they hate the U.S. version of federalism. They hate the U.S. Constitution, because it is antithetical to their entire Marxist ideology. Marxism is all about the collective and massive centralized power. Our Constitution is about the rights of the individual above the state. Even worse to the Marxist ideologue, our Declaration of Independence bluntly says that the rights of the individual come from God, not from the state:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed...

To the Marxist, those words are like sunshine to a vampire. Thus, the Left (both domestic and international), particularly its radical elements, wants the United States and its Constitution to fail. Everything they do is deliberately and consciously aimed at trying to make that happen. We must never underestimate them and think they are only pudding-headed emotional crazies. Not true. They are calculating, relentless and full of hate for everything you and I love.

Granted, some of the opposition to the Iraq battlefront in our war against radical Islamism is the result of ordinary politics. President Bush is a Republican, ergo Democrats oppose what he does. The reverse is also true. Republicans oppose most of what any Democrat president does. However, beyond the veneer of ordinary politics, we on the Right must never lose sight of the fact that the Left wants our Constitution and the United States to fail. They are not patriots, but modern-day Benedict Arnolds and Quislings -- people who actively aide and collaborate with our nation's enemies.
