I think it's a gesture of deep honor and respect, but I'm not specifically knowledgeable about this tradition.
I wasn't SEAL but I went through SERE at North Island and the instructors were SEAL/UDT. Hard as nails but after it was all over, the best friends ever.
BUDS training was there and training for them was....well, there isn't a word for it. For those who made the cut shared the pain to wear the BUDS Trident; they all shared the pain at the loss of a team mate.
