Official warns against hiring illegal immigrants in Dallas

07:48 AM CDT on Thursday, April 10, 2008

By DIANNE SOLÍS / The Dallas Morning News
dsolis@dallasnews.com

Assistant Homeland Security chief Julie Myers had some tough talk for Dallas business owners Wednesday: The crackdown on employers who hire illegal immigrants will continue. And just in case they don't believe her, she detailed recent prosecutions of managers.

Ms. Myers, in town for a luncheon hosted by the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce, also talked about an initiative aimed at ensuring deportation of criminal illegal immigrants in local jails.

Ms. Myers oversees Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement department, the second-largest law enforcement agency in the nation and one with a portfolio that includes a crackdown on illegal immigrants and those who employ them.

"Ignoring the laws will not make them go away," Ms. Myers told an audience of businessmen and businesswomen.

Some employers are participating in "domestic outsourcing" by hiring illegal immigrants, Ms. Myers said. The result, she said, is that employers exploit workers with lower wages and lax adherence to safety and environmental laws.

But she probably ate in restaurants stocked with illegal workers, stayed at hotels staffed by illegals in housekeeping, and passed tens of thousands of illegals on the roads to and from the airport.

She’s a lying POS who got the job due to nepotism and presumed incompetence for the position in furtherance of el presidente’s open borders policy.

Meanwhile, in Prince William County, Virginia (as heard on the radio WWWT 107.7 this morning), the jails are overcrowded with arrested illegal aliens that ICE has yet to come and pick up.

The locals are often more willing to do their jobs than the feds are to do theirs.

Remember President Bush’s Saturday speech at the White House, after Katrina struck?

Behind him to his left was failed Homeland Security chief and lawyer Michael Chertoff. But to his right was Gen. Richard Myers, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

I remember thinking: If only Bush had appointed a military or law enforcement type like Gen. Myers, to head up Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)—the most important law enforcement agency in the War on Terror—instead of his niece, Julie L. Myers. Julie Myers is another lawyer like Chertoff, inept and inexperienced when it comes to law enforcement.

Gee, I wonder where they get the idea that they can ignore the laws and not worry about it? Maybe from the last 7 years of this administration? Build a real fence, increase the fines by 10x, and lockup the company bigwigs instead of a few lower level disposable managers. That would slow it down.

She's the niece of former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Richard Myers.

Manifestly unfit/unqualified for the job. A recess appointment by el presidente because of it.

Good grief, folks. You complain when nothing is done about illegals, and you complain about someone doing something about illegals. Maybe you don't agree with her getting this job or her politics or whatever ... but she's on the mark with this one. It's about time somebody started cracking down on Dallas business hiring them. Too many of them do it and get by with it.

A similar crackdown is working in Arizona and Oklahoma ... it can work here.

If the Dallas-area ICE were interested in cleaning up illegals, they could do worse than to hit the lot behind Best Buy in Plano off of 75. There’s a DART station there, and a Home Depot nearby, and there must be a hundred guys “inexplicably” loitering around the street and a small parking lot back there, soliciting any car that happens to drive by.

I’m almost tempted to park my white, unmarked Suburban just up the street and start taking pictures and jotting notes down on a clipboard, and see how long it takes before the crowds “mysteriously” dry up.

Be sure to exercise CCW, in case you get people who get very upset at getting their pics taken

Or cruise the local hospital parking lots and deport the pregnant ladies just waiting to have anchor babies at taxpayer expense.

...

plus deport parents who show up in the morning to drop of their kids for those bus rides to ESL classes in PISD schools.

There would be no funding issues (and related property tax issues) for Texas schools if the illegals were deported.

Same thing for health care funding.

Same thing for skyrocketing auto insurance rates to compensate for the illegals who drive without licenses, uninsured, and frequently drunk.

I'm surprised that is tolerated (meaning, of course, the gathering of the illegals in plain sight). The DFW metroplex tends to keep this stuff under wraps by providing buildings in which the day labor crowd can wait for contractors to show up. There was a thread some months ago about such a place in Richardson.

I think there's another one over in the Carrollton - Farmer's Branch area, in a former Wal-Mart building. Just my unconfirmed suspicion, though.

As for Ms. Myers' tough talk, I'd prefer more action and no advance warning... just lower the boom on employers who are ignoring the rules.

“The last 7 years”??

Where have you been for the two generations BEFORE President Bush took office? He’s been awful on this issue, but you sure can’t place ALL the blame at his doorstep. This would never have happened if Congress hadn’t passed that stupid amnesty bill in the 80s to ‘solve’ the illegal problem—it just made things a million times worse! :-(

I know where you are talking about—there used to be a sign at that building that said something like “Day Laborers’ Center”—might as well have said “Illegal Immigrant Welcoming and Solicitation Center”—funny, no sign identifying the place now, although there’s always men milling about there with nothing to do most days until the construction site managers show up with their empty pick up truck beds and fill them up.

That is because that is a designated "day labor" facility. Since they put the damn thing there the surrounding part of Plano east of 75 has turned into a slightly better version of Mexico City. One block east of the train station in the strip center that used to have a wide variety of businesses there are now two big mexican groceries stores, handful’s of other mexican businesses (don't know what they are, don't read Spanish) and crime is off the charts. The mexicans get the lease spaces cheap because NOBODY else will rent there. It got so bad the Plano Police put in a satellite station in the strip center itself. Saves them gas from going back and forth to pick up the thieves.

Sorry for the rant, but this has been too ridiculous for too long. Well, what a solution, deport the criminal illegals so they can slip across the border soon after and commit even more crimes. No wonder the drug cartels just love us to pieces.

I'm surprised that is tolerated (meaning, of course, the gathering of the illegals in plain sight).

Oh, no, it happens every morning. Let's see, if you're in Riverside, CA, there's a Home Depot parking lot right off a major freeway where the illegals approach you with their only English speaker asking for day work - in cash. And if you travel in Lewisville or Denton, Texas there are major freeway intersections where strip mall parking lots are loaded every morning with illegals. The police, the INS, do nothing. The illegals are out in broad daylight every day and the government will do nothing.

Aside from the fact that they don't pay billions of dollars in taxes (there are wire services set up to send money home to Mexico, where American tax-free dollars are the largest source of national income), they are also swamping our social services. Their anchor babies are born free of charge in the same hospitals where Americans need money/insurance or they'll be pursued by collection agencies. The WIC offices list Spanish speaking as a real plus on the employment forms because the majority of the people applying only speak Spanish.

Sorry for the rant, but this has gone on for at least 20 years and it's getting worse all the time. Viva la Requista!

Hell, I know it's happening everywhere. My point was that the Dallas area has taken action to keep the congregating of illegals seeking day labor jobs out of public view as much as possible.

Some of the "day labor centers" have been around for a decade or more, but the number of Mexicans is evidently overwhelming the efforts to keep eveything neatly buttoned-down.

Everyone knows this has been going on for decades. This is a Bush administration spokeswoman, therefore I want to know what HER boss has been doing the last 7 years on stopping immigration. We elected a Republican president to two terms and all we get is Democrat immigration policies. I would hope a Republican would place a lot more emphasis on border security (I surely don’t expect a Democrat to do so). And yes, the Reagan Amnesty Bill stunk too.
