Question: Is there a way to change the font size on Free Republic? (vanity)
Nevadan

Posted on 04/10/2008 8:01:17 AM PDT by Nevadan

This week the font size of the articles & posts on Free Republic enlarged to the same size as the titles, making the readability for me much harder, particularly when I am scanning the posts. Is there a way to change it back to what it was? I previously viewed the titles in an Arial size 12 font and the body of the thread & posts in size 10. (It is just on the Free Republic website that I have this problem, so it is not my computer's Internet preference settings.)

The line spacing is screwed up too. The entire post block should be grouped much closer together than from block to block.

With IE go to tools, then page, and select text size.

If you have a view button in your web toolbar, click view, then scroll down to text size and hit larger or smaller.

I was going to say NO. But you did me one better.

You don't you check this site out first:

www.zombietime.com

Not that there's anything wrong with that (o.k., well, maybe there is), and not that I'm saying about that regarding yourself, and whatnot. O.k. so maybe I am.

Try clicking on the ACCOUNTS option of the menu, and then check into block something or another on the page that comes up.

Other than that I dunno.

If you want I can strive to deliver a smart-ass answer (or not).

I've already made about five posts regarding this very topic...the title in blue is smaller, the comments in normal font is HUGE, the replies number is teeny in bold and very hard to find.

It is very, very hard on the eyes to skim through the Forum page for newsy threads. Once inside, your eyes sing hallelujah! I'm not elderly, nor do I wear glasses...the eye strain is causing me to stay away from FR. :(

As for suggestions of beta and browsers, I don't know what any of that lingo even means...I imagine there are others in the same boat.

This is certainly their site and they can do whatever they want; however, it is my time and money that I can do whatever I want with and I choose to not waste either on this site until they quit with all this much ado about (virtually) nothing (in the way of basic functionality that is important). It is now less readable, sort of like a comfortable old chair I have been thrown out of. I will check back from time to time but this format puts me off and I ain't messing with my browsers.

I think in IE one can do this:

  1. Left-click anywhere on the main FR forum
  2. Hold down the CTRL button
  3. Scroll your mouse-wheel up and down (scrolling up decreases the font size; scrolling down increases it).

For Firefox users...

I setup a script at http://userstyles.org/styles/6280 that lets a user change the font to 12pt Verdana for the main site. I just added the beta to the script on my PC and it works ok there too. It can easily be modified to another font if you wish.

That method is a session-only change, right?

Also, it does not permit changing the typeface.

Some of us with old eyes prefer serif fonts. A favorite of mine I picked up somewhere along the way is called Thorndale.

So far, nothing anybody has suggested has helped me. As I stated in my post, it is not my computer's Internet setting. I don't want to view everything on every site of the internet as smaller. I have tried the account & page layout business. I don't see where monkeying with it changes things back to the way they were or that I even have an option on changing the font size for the body of the posts. I went to the beta page and it doesn't do the job either. I went to the link with the 300+ posts. Truthfully, I didn't read all of them. But if there is any easy solution, I am open to it. If it is something I can't fix, I just want to know. And while I am at it, the new search engine stinks too!

So many of you all going nuts, I’m astonished.

How many of you are Mac users?

You do know that theres the “text size” drop-down option of the View in the browser menu-bar?

Maybe you have your system font tweaked in some fashion and forgot all ‘bout that? The new web site uses CSS (cascading style sheets now), and so is driven by YOUR system fonts.

There’s pictures? Huh. I did NOT know that. I’m going there right now, ‘cause theres GOT to be MORE hot babes there than what I’ve seen so far.

I haven’t seen one yet. Well, o.k., I DID see one, but there was definitely something wrong with her (just couldn’t put my finger on just what it was though).

So I don’t konw what to tell you ‘bout that.

Try clearing the cache in your browser. In the browser menu-bar, click tools, internet options, and then clear temp interet files. Close the browser, and then relaunch it and try again.

You may have to fool around with your system font. Right click on the desk-top (your wallpaper), then appearance. All sorts of settings in there.

Whatever the deal is pertains to some particular unique system configuration on the client (you), not the server (Free Republic).

I could be wrong, but that’s my gut.

Goto ACCOUNT

On mine, MANAGE BLOCKS goes to My Page Layout.

The fonts I would like to change are set to DEFAULT, so I can't change them. And that DEFAULT size is the problem.

===

It is ridiculous.

Yesterday, the fonts kept getting smaller and smaller. Some were as small as 7 pt. That is unreadable on a monitor.

I try adjusting the browser font, Internet Options font, Win Desktop font. I get it somewhat readable, and the fonts on FR change again.

Now, if I set the browser to increase the size of those smallest fonts, the other text becomes massively huge.

==

This is a portion of a screen cap I made yesterday of one particular shrinking thread. This is actual monitor viewing size; it has not been photoshop shrinked.

Earlier, there was no difference to me either. About 30 min ago the main site flipped, so all the shadings for the sidebars disappeared, and the font sizing and format went awry. The beta site shows as I’m used to, correct font size and layout and shadings.

I’m also using Linux with Konqueror 3.5 as my browser, and it works similar to Firefox. My WinXP got killed by a ZoneAlarm upgrade, and I have another drive coming before I do a rebuild on it and hopefully save my data on the existing drive. I won’t be using ZA any more!!

The issue is not the font. It is the font size. It is a readability issue.

I’m taking a risk here...but what on earth is beta? All I can think of is an old video format. Are we supposed to do something to be able to read the site better? And does this involve switching to the beta site (whatever and wherever that is)?

I’ve seen that before. Its related to pitch size.

Annoying as all get out. Crap gets all bodly and what not.

That’s your system font.

Right click on the desk-top, click properties, click settings tab, then advanced button. Then look into the DPI slider. Mine is set at 101 dpi. My screen resolution is 1280 x 960. So you may have to toy with that.

You may also have to toy with the various settings in the “appearance” tab. Before you mess with that, make sure that you save the “scheme” you presently have to something. Use today’s date. Then you can mess around to hearts content.

When you start messing with that its going to change EVERYTING, buttons, task bar icons, system tray icons, desktop icon letters, Windows Explorer font, etc.

I’m going to dig into CSS specifics. I’ll get back to you in a short. Reason being, you may have custom CSS. You should know if that’s the case. But maybe not, and you’ve been using your system for years and now this.

Yep. I know how it is. Been there. Done that.

Not sure how to help you but my current layout gives a slightly larger title in bold with small date/poster info and it appears to me the same size text in the body/replies. You may check the following thread if you haven’t to see if anything that John has posted impacts your system....

Setting individual browser sizes IS NOT WORKING, because John is (or was yesterday) still changing various font sizes.

==

If you increase the browser font size, that only changes some fonts. The FR pages are NOT set up or designed for font size changes to be proportional. That is the problem!

Some text lines changes with browser view; some text lines remain the same size. So you end up with a massively huge line of text and tiny lines of text.

You set your browser view to where it is viewable. Later, the fonts are changed because John has added or removed or altered some other feature. This has been going on for days, now.

I have had to re-adjust my browser/Internet Options/Win Desktop 6 or 8 times in the last 3 days just trying to keep up with the font size changes.

For what it’s worth, I agree with you. In particular, I liked the size differentiation between titles and posts when looking at my pings. I miss it. As is, things are harder to read.

I know it’s partly just what we’re used to...I’ve gotten so I kind of like the extra tabs and views, though I was one of the complainers when that came on. But even so...

I also don’t think most who are replying here are getting the fact that it isn’t just overall text size that’s the issue.
